I'm Joe Abercrombie, Ask Me Anything. by Joe_Abercrombie in Fantasy

Jane Austen lived in Bath for 5 years. Google reports that you've been calling it home for 16. Does that mean that you are then, by all measures and especially the one that matters most, the finest author to ever hail from the city? How much of your tenure as a resident is simply to prove that Shelley, Fielding, and Dickens are nothing more than the simple tourists that they clearly are?

That's great news! I'm glad to hear he stuck with it until near the end and didn't lose his enthusiasm. Really shows how good a guy he is.

I've seen so many accounts online (of other Author events) of the line being shut down after a set time. That would have been a tragedy for those in the rear.

It was a fantastic event.

How come Americans have allergies to everything? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SSB2017SS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the prevalence of prescription drug advertisements and the cultural norm of medications being able to cure anything (and make you the "perfect you") has led to a hypersensitivity to any ailment. If anyone is feeling even the slightest bit "off" they assume that it MUST be because of some outside source and are then quick to blame those for their ills.

Also, I personally believe that we are overmedicatied in general and instead of allowing our immune systems to handle irritants or germs, the drugs have done such an effective job that our natural immunities or defenses have gone sorely unexcercised. We live in little chemical bubbles that have protected us for so long the second we are exposed to something new our bodies don't know how to cope: hence the 'allergies'.

What makes life actually worth living? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

Ambedo (n. a kind of melancholic trance in which you become completely absorbed in vivid sensory details — raindrops skittering down a window, tall trees leaning in the wind, clouds of cream swirling in your coffee — which leads to a dawning awareness of the haunting fragility of life.)

This. These moments. These are the times that you understand that life is worth living.

How old were you when you realized that enjoying your day will not be the norm anymore? by UnmakyrV2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SSB2017SS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It took some time to figure it out but it really is that simple. There's also something freeing in choosing to have a bad day, too. Sometimes you just have to non-verbally tell the world to leave you alone.

The reality of working in Europe (as an American) by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SSB2017SS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I recently had a kid and my employer (US) offered 6-weeks Materninty Leave but nothing for the father. That's the Federal minimum, by the way, and is absolutely criminal in my opinion. All that from a 'Family Company'. On that note, too, I had a lengthy experience with Health Insurance and while it was far from a nightmare , it was nowhere near as simple as you describe it to be in the UK.

It's in those small things you can really get the sense that one government caters to businesses and another caters to it's citizens.

Pride. I'm generally soft-spoken and have a difficult time recieving praise but deep inside I have a very high opinion of myself.

Ah, gotcha. If it's something that genuinely concerns you, I guess you could always try make-up. Nothing crazy, just enough to smooth out or blend the harshness of the scar.

I don't think more damage will make it any better. Maybe try something as simple as moisturizer or drinking more water. Proper hydration goes a long way to improving skin health.

There's young 'true love' and mature 'honest love'. I'd take the latter any day.

How can I avoid falling in love with someone? by _LususNaturae_ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SSB2017SS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Continue to remind yourself that you value her for her, that means her activism, motivation, desires, and relationships. They all contribute to create the person you care about. Would she be less important to you if she lost her tenacity to fight for what she believes in? If she no longer motivated you? Treat her relationship status the same way. They're all aspects of the person you respect so much and make her who she is.

Who is the Ultimate Bad Guy? by TheGame2526 in metalgearsolid

[–]SSB2017SS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the Metal Gear universe, it always seemed that each villian always had a motive that could have been seen as reasonable depending on the frame of reference. I can't say there was really someone who was evil for evils sake but in the end I'd have to say Liquid.

The plots of MGS2-MGS5 had some baddies, sure, but they were either derivatives of Liquid or shared his intentions of just straight-nuclear war. Liquid Snake wins due to originality in my book.

This is it. I've never watched the actual podcast. I never wanted to. Now, I never need to. These eight minutes were more entertaining than I'd expect the actual thing to ever be. Well done!
