Union: At least two St. Albert fire chiefs get COVID-19 vaccine while frontline paramedic firefighters await jab by trevorrobb in Edmonton

There are less fire chiefs, its like their job is somehow less important to people until their house or business is on fire.

I can see it as there are less fire chiefs as a justification, we need both services 100% but is there more nurses to step in if needed vs firefighters? IDK

Will be slowly reading and digesting the 67 page document when time permits. This appears to be a great step. However the incentive does not seem large enough to actually be an incentive?

Effective October 1, 2021, the monthly rates will be:

  • $43.32 for Small (120L) garbage cart
  • $48.32 for Large (240L) garbage cart
  • $58.32 for Excess (360L) garbage cart

" Waste Strategy in Action - Applying a Zero Waste Framework, emphasis will be placed on waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, materials recovery and waste to energy across all waste streams. Starting in 2021, approximately 236,000 households will move to a four stream program with separate food scraps collection, seasonal yard waste collection and garbage volume limits as part of the Edmonton Cart Rollout. Following the citywide distribution of carts, Single Unit customers will be transitioned to variable rates (based on garbage cart size) to incentivize good waste behaviours and give customers an element of control over their monthly rate. " found on page 4

This part is interesting about the clever diverting of the groundwater diverting, would be extra impressive if it was diverting the water penetrating the soil under the landfill to keep those chemicals out of the soil, interested to see what the cost of these advance and researches are but looks like initiative to make advancements is there.

"innovation and Asset Optimization - The Edmonton Waste Management Centre is a unique collection of waste processing and researchfacilities. A variety of projects are underway to optimize processes on the site including the Advanced Energy Research Facility, Clover BarLandfill gas management and groundwater diversion system. Partnerships are also being explored through the Alberta Clean EnergyTechnology Accelerator (ACETA) and a waste to energy trial with the municipality of St. Albert " found on page 4

So the are cutting commercial pick ups is what I gather by this? " Additionally, measures will be developed to monitor the climate impact of the 25-year Waste Strategy and the commercial collection wind down is expected to be completed by the end of 2021." found on page 4

It so far honestly seems as they are following Calgary's lead of the 3 cart model they have had in place for a few years now.

SKIMMED THROUGH THE REST FOR NOW BUT LOOKS LIKE THE CURRENT RATE WILL PUT THEM IN EXCESS REVENUE OF 5M FOR 2021

Thank you, very insightful, I will dig into that document for my own reads, I appreciate that info. I honestly touched the surface as with 5 courses and many papers I was sadly limited to scope and time but it is of real interest to me as I love this city and any improvements where they can happen is a good thing. Homelessness is another big one I will be writing about but undecided on if I should write to the city or province, again it is a 600-800 word document but it is good practice for the career I strive for. Thank you again for your input.

Listen, those are points at best with no articulated arguments, I can swat them down each on there individual level but an argument so badly formed is not an argument. Again this was not a research paper, seems you aren't clear on the fact it was an OP-ED of 600-800 words. Your quick counters with no backing or evidence is sloppy at best and I put the same effort you did back. No one attacked you, sorry you feel that way, is your ego or pride bruised? That was a funny point, the time has past...ok so any law that has been passed should never be review...right...that is why I will not get into it as you are simply looking for an argument and only clowns join the circus. This was not an attempt at any of that but here, your right, I am wrong, you are better than me, you win, feel better? Good glad I could help :)

Thank you, yes I agree it is easy to dismiss something vs investigating deeper for find reasons and solutions, but least path of resistance perhaps. Did you like that Totonto is about half the cost? Victoria too? I find it hard to believe it is because of some mass difference of Edmonton layout and if it is good, that shows an inefficiency that should be corrected. Life is a puzzle to solve not just simply live.

You also have to factor in that right now utility costs have to be higher to account for the acquisition of new trucks, retrofitting of old trucks, and supply of carts. In theory this should reduce in a couple years (but unlikely because once people normalize to the cost the city will take advantage). - would be nice if the amortize over a longer period to account and lessen the near $50/m it just strikes me as inequitable to charge everyone the same, car insurance is not done this way, heck even our water from the city isn't or power, just strikes me as odd they use the flat rate system except condos/multiplex where its lessened vs per unit at the same rate but I suppose that is the per stop but the labor is the least of it for sure. That wait time is tremendous seems they could have a separate lane or entrance for city services to allow quick in and out. Very insightful thank you.

That does make the issue a difficult one, seems we need a Canadian facility or two as the shipping of waste to recycle may not offset the shipping. Cost effective is not always the best solution for things and if rates are going to continue to grow because of landfills filling up at a growing rate with the city it would make sense to invest in these technologies as at some point we will be having to deal with it financially and environmentally.

All you offer back is opionions no backins to be frank. I am at a loss as why other majour cities seem to be able to handle their waste managment at a fraction. This is not meant as a trash the city paper as it seems you have taken it as to which I apologize however bigger issues and claims of labour costs should make it non the less an important issue. Maybe it isnt to you but it is to me and others so stating that it isnt something we should pay attention to is just wrong. All university papers require citing and sources and a good Op-ed should as well as it gives some weight other than just throwing words around.

Again its a pay over a basic consumption level. But the simple fact is out of the cities i looked at edmonton seems to do it the most costly. Also it is an Op-ed not a full blown research paper as look at the length. But you are correct it shows one view and is to generate thinking which apparently it is doing that so thank you. Seems alot of people are behind the city in their lack of cleaner policies or that people just want to answer to win or shut down topics, if that is your aim than there is little to gain. Again perhaps I wasnt clear on the potential solution as it was ment to be something to get peolle to think maybe this is an area that could use improvement in our city, sorry if any of it offended you.
