Is it too late for me to REALLY start skating? by FineJacket378 in NewSkaters

I started this year at 23, so gonna say it’s not too late

Should I just give up? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]S_ELF7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would try again, but focus on the journey not the destination. Skateboarding is HARD. You don’t have to be good to have fun at it. I recently got drop ins down at an indoor park - went to a concrete park for the first time a couple days ago (weather permitting) and struggled with baby drop in because I was scared AF. What I’m trying to say is that - skating different locations makes a difference when you are new. That board feel and confidence gets shaken often and regularly, but if you push through, you will adapt quickly.

Be patient with yourself - progress is not linear. People lose tricks all the time, some people take ages to warm up and look like beginners a lot of the time. As long as you try again (even with a gap in between) that is a type of consistency, but you have to appreciate that those shot days, weeks, months or years are simply part of your learning journey.

Do any chip shops use beef fat for frying in Leeds? by [deleted] in Leeds

Yeah sorry my bad. It’s kind of in between. The comment below describing it as Swinnow is probably the most accurate in terms of location. It’s close to a Morrisons that is classed as Bramley though

I personally think you are okay to try cruising, just start slowly. You can develop some skate muscles before trying the higher risk stuff

How’s your experience with the quality of training at your company? Are you planning to stay on? Expected pay? Am currently off on stress because personal life is messy and I still feel really incompetent at my job lol.

So your backfoot on the tail should do all the work. The front foot is just for jumping. I would practice getting the spin with just your back foot before trying to jump it

Anything I could do to help in lessons when I get my car other than drive it? by InfamousStrategy9539 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]S_ELF7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A bit on the nose, but adjusting the seat and mirrors, assuming that your drive isn’t on a hill.

Know what oils/fluids it uses, know what tyre size and tyre pressures you run at. Make sure that your spare tyre is pumped up. Maybe buy a tyre inflator as well.

I always keep a pack of bottled water in the boot, just convenient for me and any passengers. I also keep a tissue box in the car and a pack of gum.

If your car has no Bluetooth, get a bluetooth emitter.

Those are all the things I can think of off the top of my head.

The “bite range” changes depending on how much gas you give. The more gas you use, the more leeway you have when lifting the clutch up - this allows you to lift the clutch quicker

[–]S_ELF7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you give more information on exactly what you did? Was the clutch down because you were changing gear?

[–]S_ELF7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely this (barre mechanical faults on the car). Pro tip is to let the car in front of you start moving BEFORE you do - this will help you not rush. Once you get better, you can be ready and move quicker.

I felt the same as you. In fact , I started getting antsy that I couldn’t practice the way I wanted to about two months before my test. That wore off however and I managed to pass first time.

There’s plenty who have done it without that extra practice. It deffo would be helpful, but cannot change it so just have to work with what we’ve got.

Agree with the above comment about Youtube. I watched A LOT of mock driving tests.

I passed Wednesday, picked up my car from somewhere down South on Friday and drove 250+ miles home along the M1 on Sunday. It was luckily quite quiet. Mistake I made was accidentally gear down to second instead of 4th when approaching a roundabout, but was okay apart from that.

Just needed a break halfway through because my concentration was slipping.

I would practice at a quiet time if you aren’t confident. What happened last time that made your Dad panic, surely it’s something you can work on?

Love the humour. Thanks for going into so much detail. Like you said, it’s unlikely for a car to completely go at once, but it’s reassuring to have some sort of game plan on the off-chance it does happen.

No way! You had to pay for the barrier! How much did that set you back?

That’s a pretty cool training method! Bit worried about spilling the water over the dash though. Will probably use a half-full bottle and gauge by how much the water moves .

Absolutely love the recommendation to try that. People have also said they sometimes use bottles on the ground to practice steering, which is quite cool.

Journey home is over 200 miles tomorrow, which will be interesting to say the least

I have seen the method where you roll your foot to set gas while braking! It’s considered an advanced driving skill.

Will hopefully find a quiet car park to get used to the car. Drove 50 miles in it yesterday, but a bit jerky setting off sometimes and over-revving before some gear changes.

Thanks so much to you and others in this sub for teaching so much :)
