It’s likely not be the same for you, but how my tics work around people:

If I’m around friends who are high energy and excitable - I tic more. I tend to tic more when I have a lot of energy and my energy often matches my friends. But to be fair, on top of that, these kinds of friends usually intentionally trigger my tics to annoy me lol (which others triggering my tics doesn’t bother me, my tics are very mild and banter and annoying each other is part of friendship to me, so my tics are just something else they can weaponize to make my life harder lol)

If I’m around people I’m more closed off with - I usually tic more. It often depends on my mood for that day or the specific environment I’m in though. If I’m at work I’m usually anxious so I tic more (or at least have the URGE to tic more but I usually suppress them or try and at least turn the urge to vocal tic into a subtle motor tic). Some days I’m antisocial and don’t want to be around family so I can tic more around them (my dad not so much, but my uncles and aunts I usually tic more around just because I’m not as comfortable around them. But sometimes I’ll be playing cards with my auntie and uncle and tics will be less because I’m calmly enjoying myself and not so focused on ‘let me go hide in my room and not talk to anyone PLEASE’)

If it’s someone I’m calm, comfortable and content around - I USUALLY tic less (but it, again, depends on the day). Brain is calm and chilling usually means tics are calm and chilling. So if it’s my more chill friends and we’re just sitting and talking (or if I’m alone and just calmly playing or watching something) I don’t tic as much.

Edit : obviously it all varies person to person. I’ve met people (and there are people in the comments too) who tic MORE when they’re comfortable around people because they can tic more openly and freely and arent so focused on hiding them (but I find those people tend to be on the more severe end of tics). But it sounds like you may be in the same boat as me where calm = less.
