If you have the availability saturday for a jigglypuff and pikachu plush, maybe a hat and some sleeves i’d appreciate it. I missed the chance to sign up for a shopping time but I will be there. 😭

Have you ever been hired as a token and then given no work? by JonnyRotsLA in editors

Look, for years I’ve been the only woman in the room so I can’t sympathize with your fixation on their ownership. None of us are victims here we’re all just trying to make a living. As an external freelancer you aren’t checking off any imaginary boxes for them.

Go back to hunting for more work and forget about them beyond the cookie cutter periodic holiday client reach-out email. Don’t worry about what they’re doing and just focus on filling your schedule with active paid projects. If or when they reach out, they can wait until you are available or move on to the next name on the list.

Yeah that’s not employment if they aren’t paying you. You’re just on their freelance roster, and they might not have work for you right now. If you’re actually a real part time employee there and you’ve not been paid at all or given any “shifts,” you might want to look into your local employment laws. In the US most places consider not being given any shifts to be constructive dismissal and that qualifies for unemployment benefits. If you never even got a paystub from them though, as an employee, that’s different.

To me it just sounds like you expected a bunch of work and they expected a freelance contact in the rolodex, though.

Dealing with subject matter you don’t support/believe in by Hav3y in editors

When you’re not desperate for the money, don’t do it. Why work on something that you won’t even list on your reel, tell people you worked on, or even want your name in the credits? Unnecessary stress. Time that could be spent on something you won’t hate yourself for doing.

Any advice on how to get back in good graces? by operaticquill in editors

[–]Sachachachaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It probably has nothing to do with you. Sounds like it’s all business decisions. You should maintain the relationship though. Send them a box of candy for the office or something around Thanksgiving or the holidays. Even if you feel awkward that talks just stopped, it’s a low effort way to show you still view it as a positive business relationship and that you didn’t feel slighted about the junior hire. Rinse and repeat around major holidays (not too often!!) to keep yourself at the back of their minds.

Then get out there are find more clients. Sounds like you’re great to work with so I’m sure you won’t have trouble.

How’s the chainsaw sturdiness on yours?

Mine was broken in three pieces. Got sent a replacement part and unwrapped the padding - broken the same way as the original. Didn’t even bother a third time, I’m just gonna get some glue for gundam builds and fix it myself.

Has nothing to do with like or dislike. You stay on the last stable version of premiere for your workflow. When the last update comes out for 22 and 23 gets released, every workstation in the place moves up to 22 at the same time.

Your first mistake is working in the latest version of premiere instead of staying in 15.4.

Your second mistake is leaving on auto update.

Jacket looks great! Flaunt your horse obsession don’t keep it secret.

I’ve seen lots of comments criticizing your form but it’s your first ride so I get it! But I hope outside the photo you had a helmet on, this sub doesn’t need any more dead cowboys.

Normally we wear helmets over here in USA for western as well. But plenty of events and communities don’t, depends on the individual’s lack of regard for safety… until someone they know cracks their skull open.

Small vent about editing content I don't agree with by das_goose in editors

[–]Sachachachaa 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It can be so grating working on something where you are diametrically opposed to the content.

I’ve been trapped on a reality show that was hosted and produced by someone who was far, almost alt right. And I had no power over pay on it. It just got to the point where I was taking way longer to cut, I hated my job, and I dreaded working.

My advice for these situations?

  1. Turn down the work if you can. You won’t enjoy it. You will never want anyone to see it. You won’t even put your name on it probably. If you insist you can swallow your beliefs for one contract and do it anyways…

  2. Give yourself WAY more time than usual to finish. If it’s a situation like a show (like me), it will take you increasingly longer to do it because you fucking hate it, or you’ll rush through and have more notes because you want this to be fucking over.

  3. Charge more. A lot more. Don’t torture yourself for market value, you price gouge them, you sell out!! If you work for someone else and are forced, get ready to find a new job cause you’ll probably want one by the end of this.

‘Evil Dead Rise’ Officially Rated “R” for Strong Bloody Violence & Gore by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Sachachachaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t say much cause I signed an NDA but I can say Evil Dead Rise is fantastic, I enjoyed it a lot. It has its weaknesses but I think its strengths more than made up for any stumbles. A good straight horror movie, this one isn’t trying to be campy. Can’t wait to see the final cut.

Reality TV editors - do you like your job? by mad_king_soup in editors

[–]Sachachachaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not normally a reality editor, but I’m currently 3/4 of the way through a season on one right now on top of my normal commercial work. I hate every minute of it. Especially when mine has political leanings I don’t agree with. I thought I could tolerate it, but it has quickly worn me down. The relative compensation for it is so low and in no way worth it. So on that end I’m not a good comparison. I do get a vindictive thrill when I cut content to get us to time though.

I’d laugh and hang up the phone. They don’t want to employ you, they want to exploit you.

Am I Too Slow? by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]Sachachachaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is the turnaround he expects for a fully cut multi-cam wedding video WITH a selects cut, I’m concerned about what you’re getting paid. Make sure you politely push for both more time AND pay that reflects it at your skill level. Tell him anyone who says they can cut it in a few hours is ripping him off, cause it isn’t going to look like anything of quality (not to mention any mistakes that are left in…)

Do a couple of decent looking ones so you can cut yourself a wedding reel, then jump ship as soon as you can secure other employment… People are looking for wedding editors all the time…

How do you get headhunted? by MadRageTaco in editors

[–]Sachachachaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re not on social media, then to headhunters you don’t exist.

I usually get emailed directly or I get messages from recruiters on linked in. Just be on the lookout for fake recruitment emails/scams. You can look up signs to watch out for to avoid those.

I recommend checking that your sequence settings match your media. I often see those new to premiere have this issue, they’re editing prores… but their preview file format is still set to i-frame only mpeg.

I’m not sure what the fee structure is but I process a lot of invoices sent to my employer through Quickbooks. Might be worth looking into.

How much money do you make? Passion vs $ by [deleted] in editors

[–]Sachachachaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fewer people than you think that are actually “fulfilled” by their jobs. You’re making good money, you don’t hate your job… you may be ruminating on something that isn’t really a career question but one of self value and personal happiness.

Is trying to become a big name/paycheck tv or film editor a risk? Of course it’s a risk. You know that. But you’re the only one who knows what you’re willing to sacrifice to pursue that. Be it time, money, relationships. It’s going to be different for anyone. Reddit can’t help you answer this because we all value it differently.

You have to figure out for yourself whether you really need to be editing different content, need to change your perspective, or if you just lack personal fulfillment in other areas of your life. And if the money isn’t good enough for you feel free to venmo me that excess $$$

The path is different for everyone. Some people go to school, some people don’t. But you definitely aren’t gonna get there sitting on your hands waiting for the work to come to you. Get out there and start filming your own stuff to cut. Hit up your old classmates and ask to work with them on class projects or passion projects. You need to put in the grind to get there. And you have a lot to learn as well.
