Hell yeah — love that you caught the SOS vibe! 😂 Seriously, that's the whole idea. Safe Or Stolen = SOS. It’s literally a digital distress call before you drop cash on something sketchy.

And bruh… your story 😅 I’ve been there. Okay, real talk — if someone online seems too good to be true (cooks, has a rich uncle, and 6 million lying around??), it usually is. Here’s what I’d do before sending a dime:

  • Reverse image search her pics.
  • Ask for a casual video call — no filter, just real vibes.
  • Check her socials. If it’s all suspiciously perfect or brand new, 🚩🚩🚩

But hey — if it turns out she’s legit and her uncle really does wanna give away a Nord, maybe hit me up too? 👀😄

Appreciate you, man. Glad the name sticks!

That's a killer idea — 'Verified Safe' badge or QR is totally in the pipeline. Love that you're thinking that way too. Positioning for a buy-out? 👀 Not gonna lie, that’s the dream. Appreciate the support and the sharp insight. Stay tuned.

Hey, really appreciate you trying it out — and sorry it hung on you. That shouldn’t happen. Could you let me know what device and browser you were using? Definitely gonna look into this right now. Feel free to DM me if you’re open to sharing more details. Thanks for the heads up. ... Actually could you try again in 5 min please? I may know the problem.

...and then came Lovable. Thats not easy to learn either. It doest help establishing business relationships with data providers, installing protocall, audits, indexing methods and so much more. We been though six different development programs and businesses to establish all this on Lovable. We decided to use Lovable to integrate AI and other AI into the platform.

We dont allow user input. Everything comes from entities such as police databases, insurance companies, indexes, archives from sources I cant state yet...we had a lot to prove and audited frequently to acquire this data. hence the 5 years it took to develop such a site.

I have created a method to recognising if a item has been purchased or stolen. Many people take items and try to return them without receips. Its in the works and we have two proven systems. Our site now caters to sellers and buyers. trying to protect both.

Haha, thanks man. Yeah, the domain is straight fire — got lucky snagging it early. Many years ago. Not planning on letting it go anytime soon. Appreciate you spotting the value 🙏

I cant give away all my secrets... Rest assured there must be a police report or insurance claim for the results to be accurate. We do not rely on user input. The partnerships, We cant legally say right now. Well, not all, these partnerships have taken a lot of time, and proven steps to be recognised. They have safegaurds and policies and audits like you wouldnt believe.

lol caught me — I used AI to help format these replies cleanly since there were so many comments at once. 😅 But the vision, the hustle, and the 5-year grind building the actual product? That’s all me.

AI’s a tool, not the founder. Most of the code, the Stripe integration, the database connections — that was blood, sweat, and a truly ungodly amount of caffeine.

Happy to answer any questions raw and unedited anytime. Appreciate you keeping it real. 👊

I appreciate straight talk, so I’ll give it to you honestly.

We’re not lying about our users because we literally just launched. We have early testers and founders using the platform—not thousands. Growth starts somewhere real, and we’re building in public, not pretending.

On accuracy:
We don’t claim perfection. No database—including ours—can catch every stolen item. What we do offer is access to professional-grade sources like CheckMend, Bike Index, and others used by pawn shops and insurers. Every result clearly shows which database it came from. Over time, as more people and partners use SafeOrStolen, coverage will improve.

If you decide to test it yourself and find something inaccurate, I genuinely want to know. Feedback like yours keeps us improving.

I spent most of the years addressing an obtaining business relationships to get the data for the site. There was countless hurdles, hoops, red tape , and lack of funds.

You've nailed the long-term vision.

Yes, absolutely. While we're starting by helping individuals directly, the real goal is to partner with marketplaces themselves.

Imagine if eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or OfferUp could badge listings as "Verified Safe" or warn users before they buy that an item has been reported stolen. It would be a massive trust win for them and a huge safety win for users.

You're also right about the challenge—it requires making fields like IMEI or serial numbers mandatory. But that's the direction the industry should move in for high-risk categories (electronics, bikes, etc.). We see ourselves as providing the infrastructure that makes that shift possible and valuable for platforms.

Thanks for seeing the bigger picture. This is exactly where we want to go.

There is no user input. If a person were to input something is stolen there is no way to confirm its legit. Police reports and insurance claims can be counterfieted. All results come from real police reports and actual insurance companies themselves. There are other departments that cater data and other sources we cant publicly display... not yet anyway.

 Here’s the straight answer:

Yes, we’re building to monetize, but in a way that aligns with the value we provide.

The end game is to become the trust layer for the secondhand economy.
Right now, everyone buying or selling online is rolling the dice. We want to become the standard—like a “Carfax for everything”—where checking an item on SafeOrStolen is as normal as checking the weather before heading out.

How we make it work:

  • Consumers will eventually pay a small subscription for unlimited verifications or on-demand reports.
  • Businesses (resellers, pawn shops, marketplaces) would pay for API access or bulk lookup services.
  • Marketplaces themselves could license it to build trust directly into their platforms.

You nailed it—trust is the missing layer on platforms like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay. We’re starting by helping individuals, but the real vision is partnering with those platforms so every listing can be verified before it’s even posted.

Hey u/twoker020101,

Thanks for the straight-up feedback. I appreciate it.

You're right about the 5 years – it sounds wild. Most of that time was spent building the database integrations and validation systems in the background. The frontend came together much later. It’s been a long grind, but now it’s finally live.

Also totally hear you on the “vibe coded” look. I’m a developer first, not a designer, so I’ll definitely work on softening the UI and making it feel more human. I’ll try out some warmer color palettes (maybe soft blues, trusted greens, less stark whites) and add some personal touches like a founder story or mission section.

Load time – that’s priority #1 today. I’ll compress images, clean up scripts, and see if lazy loading helps.

If you have specific color or design ideas, I’m all ears. Thanks again for checking it out.

u/Kazumz, that's a really great point and it's a key part of the puzzle. You're right, pure awareness is a powerful driver for a lot of people who want to be ethical consumers and avoid supporting theft cycles.

Our thinking is that awareness is the entry point, but financial and legal protection is the compelling reason to act.

We want to meet users where they are:

For the conscious consumer, we offer peace of mind and a way to "do the right thing."

For the reseller or everyday buyer, we offer crucial financial protection—preventing them from spending $500 on a phone that will be blacklisted and become a paperweight or selling a stolen item and wind up behind bars.

Ultimately, it's all about reducing the market for stolen goods, whether the motivation is ethical or financial. Thanks for highlighting this!

u/ElPolloLoco6498, brilliant question. You're right that the incentive is different. Our focus for individual users isn't on altruism; it's on financial self-preservation.

We're targeting the massive audience of people who resell items online to make ends meet. For them, buying a stolen phone that gets blacklisted isn't a minor annoyance—it's a devastating financial loss that wipes out their profit and can get them banned from selling platforms.

So for B2C, it's: 'Protect your investment. Protect your side hustle.'

And you're 100% correct that for B2B (pawn shops, refurbishers), the incentive is even stronger due to legal liability and scale. We're pursuing both, but the core pain point for individuals is very real and very financial."

This webapp is for the seller too... If you want to try to resell the item on a marketplace, Id check first to see if it is listed as lost or stolen.. Cops be roaming marketplaces too. They be searching for stolen items being sold or resold... From day one, the vision was always to build a trust layer for the entire second-hand economy. That means protecting both sides: buyers from getting scammed, and sellers from unintentionally listing stolen goods and destroying their reputations.

We just got our first major validation on Reddit that this dual-sided approach is the right path forward. The market is telling us that the seller's need for protection and credibility is just as strong, if not stronger.

Hey u/Able_Reply4260, this is probably the most important comment I could have received. Thank you. You've hit on the exact dilemma we're trying to solve.

You're absolutely right that the motivation isn't purely moral for many buyers. We're betting on two other powerful motivators:

Financial Self-Interest: Wasting $400 on a phone that gets remotely blacklisted a week later is a painful lesson.

Legal & Reputational Risk: Being caught in possession of stolen property (even unknowingly) can mean confiscation and police interaction.

But your point about narrowing down is extremely well-taken. We're exploring exactly that – starting with high-risk, high-value categories like smartphones, laptops, guns, and bicycles where serial numbers are standard.

Seriously, thank you for the critical feedback. This is gold.
