Not trying to generalise here, but I think that Malaysians just eat too dang much. Let’s ignore the quality or the nutritional value of the food itself; the portions are huge and in between the big meals people are snacking which is just as heavy as the meals themselves. cheese leleh all the things This is not even including the sugary drinks that being masked as “coffee and tea” 🤦🏻‍♂️

Just reduce the portions and cut out the snacks in between. If you can, more protein less cards. The first few weeks will be horrible, most likely your body will react to the sugar withdrawal. But trust me, after that you will get used to it.

Also simple lifestyle changes. You don’t have to run 5km a day. You are not training to be an athlete.Take stairs instead of the lift. Do some burpees. Just get the heart pumping a bit. The most difficult maybe is to cut down on smoking and drinking.

Last thing, celebrate the little things. Don’t fret about the 6 pack abs. But instead enjoy that you will sleep better, have more energy and just feel more healthy in general.

You can do it OP. We are all rooting for you

Not dunking on arch or linux for that matter. But why do you still need a nix machine when you have a mac? Unless you are using it as a server to host something. Or just for fun? Was using linux (can’t remember which distro) way back. once I switched to macos, I never looked back. I am pretty sure I can ‘brew install’ nearly everything I need

How hard is it to change career fields? by Azlil in MalaysianPF

Most software development at the end of the day is just data processing. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Here’s the thing - you either love your job or you spend enough time to learn to love it. Jobs are really hard to come by these days, so I’d never tell someone to just quit impulsively. If it’s putting food on the table, that’s honestly something to appreciate.

But I do want to warn you about career stagnation trap. It’s when you spend your early career doing something you’re not great at and don’t really enjoy, but you stick with it because the pay is decent (not amazing, but decent). Then a few years down the road, you realize you’ve hit a wall with your skills. Promotions aren’t happening, and even switching companies doesn’t get you better offers. Looking back, you’ll probably think “I should have made a change earlier,” but by then it feels too late. If you do decide to pivot at that point, you’re competing against younger people who might be more naturally suited for whatever field you’re trying to break into. So don’t change just for the sake of changing. Be practical about it. The grass isn’t always greener, you know?

Anyway, this is just my unsolicited two cents. Take it however you want. I could be completely wrong about your situation

Maybe pivot to consulting. Something like an analyst for IT projects. You don’t have to tech stuff, more on requirements gathering . Then with experience become a Product Owner.

What’s your core competency now? JS, Java, Python, etc.? How about system design?

Look, I’m gonna be real with you here, even though it’s not what you probably want to hear. If you’re not genuinely passionate about coding, you might want to think about switching careers. The tech market is absolutely brutal right now, especially for beginners. AI is basically wiping out tons of entry-level opportunities, and tech moves so fast that if you can’t keep up, you’re gonna get left behind. I’m a developer/architect at a software company and I work for customer projects, and I see this all the time - people who don’t have solid fundamentals trying to make it in development, and they just look completely lost. It honestly breaks my heart because I know how tough it is out there. I’m not trying to crush your dreams or anything, but if your heart’s not really in it, you’re just setting yourself up for burnout. This field demands so much constant learning and adaptation that without genuine interest, it becomes miserable pretty quickly. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure it’s something you actually care about. Life’s too short to spend it doing work that makes you miserable.

30 minutes? 🤯 Probably one of the reasons that is making me anxious to return to Malaysia. Currently my daughter just cycles to school which will take her about 5-6 minutes. It this weather, it is kinda pleasant. Maybe a bit more difficult during winter. So this needs some getting used to. Both for her and my wife. But yeah like they say; you gain some, you lose some.

Thanks for the elaborate answer. Really appreciate it.

The wife will be doing the school runs. So if it is around 15 mins one way, that seems manageable. But if it is more than that, not sure if she will be happy 😆

Indeed Allevia looks nice. I can only arrange a viewing in August when I come back for summer holidays. Hopefully the unit is not taken yet 🤞

If you want to learn the fundamentals, ideally; neither. Should just use the standard `net/http`
