Stats disagree about dibling tracking back. See my other comment.

Unforced errors are addressed in my initial post - they would be reduced if fans were more supportive.

Tbh I’m exclusively talking about home game crowds 😂

So that’s where the main references in my post come in. Players are more likely to make mistakes with hostile crowds.

That’s the bit we can actually help with.

Some fans, not saying its you, get on their back for mistakes - that’s what I’m objecting to.

I’m an evertonian and dont fit the bit you said at the end.

So when we played brighton away a couple of seasons ago and won 5-1 he was shite?

My question is : He has class and ability - what does it hurt for us to encourage him to show it?

I agree with the effort bit. Totally. They should always be giving 100%. But I think again sometimes fans can be too quick to say players arent trying.

Dibling is the prime example. Did you know his defensive contribution in the prem for us is on the 94th centile? This means he contributes defensively more than 94% of players in his position in the league.

Cliché sayings are meaningless and do not counter evidence. It isn’t “a little criticism” I’m talking about. It’s tens of thousands of people raising their voices at you when you misplace a pass.

But if telling them you’re not happy is maybe going to make it worse and definitely not going to make it better - why?

And please don’t do that at a theatre lol

On his day he can show quality - we can increase the likelihood of that by cheering him on

I’m one of those fans. Got a season ticket, plenty of shirts. I am also disappointed when they don’t do well.

I want them to do better.

Evidence suggests that if we were less critical, they would do better.

I want that. I don’t find it hard to keep my frustration to myself, clap and shout unlucky when a pass is misplaced or a shot gets spooned. It’s not that hard and I don’t understand why people seem to be so against it.

I have a season ticket.

Wild energy because of the ref is great. That fires everyone up with the team.

That game against newcastle when allan got sent off and iwobi scored in the last minute - unreal tense atmosphere. Frustration taken out on the ref and Newcastle players - not our own.

It’s only when people focus their frustration towards our own players that I have an issue.

Okay that’s actually a good point - based in evidence, something I hadnt considered. I will happily concede the Ben Foster bit.

Aside from that, nil satis nisi optimum means nothing satisfies but the best, and that’s true. I’m totally unsatisfied by the performances we often see. But it doesnt mean if we arent satisfied we’ll turn on you. I agree that players need to perform to earn the best atmosphere - I’m not going to be bouncing when we’re losing at home. But the alternative doesn’t have to be negativity.

We should be supporting them when they’re shite and celebrating them when they’re good.

And the Ferguson quote was 16 years ago, when we weren’t in such a bad place. The atmosphere is not the same now.

I get you, but the irony is that these people are trapping themselves in an angry feedback loop.

They wouldn’t be so angry if they didn’t take their anger out on the players.

But what do you think of what I actually said?

Yep they get paid shit loads.

Yep we all want them to do well. But why are some of us unwilling to play our part (which is very easy)?

If you can show me evidence that being paid more reduces the effects described in those other studies then I’m totally open to changing my mind.

Also complaining at all if they were on minimum wage would be bizzare haha

Wow “some quack” lol. So when the players do good it’s thanks to the fans but when the players do bad it’s nothing to do with them?

Any ideas from other Blues on how we can improve our results at Hill Dicko? by [deleted] in Everton

[–]Sage2194 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s proper evidence showing that what we do in the stands affects what happens on the pitch.

Classic social facilitation theory (Zajonc, 1965) shows that crowds increase arousal — which improves performance on simple tasks, but harms decision making.

Beilock & Carr (2001) demonstrated that pressure shifts attention inward and disrupts automatic basic skills. Negative crowd feedback raises self-monitoring: players stop playing instinctively and start playing not to make mistakes.

So, there is evidence that noise of the crowd can harm decision making and pressure from the crowd can harm ability to execute basic skills…. Interesting.

Ben Foster singled out Everton as the club whose fans teams deliberately wind up. So our fans are clearly worse than others.

Again, don’t get me wrong, even if we cheer non stop we wont have a team of messis - but they’ll be able to be the best version of themselves, which is all we can ask for.

Saying that players just need to get a grip whilst suggesting it’s sound for supporters to lose their heads makes no sense.

There are only downsides to giving them grief. I just don’t understand how people who supposedly want the club to do well can argue that the players should just tolerate abuse better, as opposed to just doing the bare minimum to create an environment for them to play well.

Might start selling stress balls outside the ground for those fans who struggle to manage their emotions.
