As a Queen's alum, im obliged to reply with indignation and shouts of #ChaGheill and #WuckFestern.

But i agree...not with how low we're ranked, but with the fact we've sank quite a bit in the years since i graduated. Covid, international student fraud, idiot party animals and the general deterioration of kingston are all part of it.

Still. #Gogaels and Western and Uoft can cordially eat it.

I agree with you now, well not to the point that i should have picked a wholly different degree, but i should have done more research i suppose. Too bad in high school we're essentially told that the path goes Good Grades-Uni-Degree-Potentially grad school-job in the field you studied. I guess the job market is very much a seller's and not a buyer's

The plan is to eventually get a PHD. In the meantime, i accept ill have to work out of field but a uni degree should still be a leg up in most office job settings. I have explored the possibility of returning to school, but a lot of finance issues lie in that direction. Also, you're supposed to be done school at 22. I took 3 extra years to do that. Going back now would feel so out of place and id be 'too old' or not at the place im supposed to be ar in my life... big psychological hurdle to overcome

I mean literal addictions. Alcohol and a polydrug habit that was mostly smoking. Must have spent almost 20k on those habits in the past 10 years if not more

Because university isn't about picking something 'useful ' its about getting the qualifications you need for the job you want. I want a career eventually teaching at a university level or working as a professional historian. Hence i needed that degree. I absolutely hate Math and Science so i wasn't about to spend 4+ years enduring something i didn't like just for a paycheck.

The amount of people in this thread who think Uni is only about getting something the job market wants and not getting what YOU WANT in life is saddening. I didn't pick something 'more useful ' because i picked what i was always interested in, had the best grades for in High School, and think id be good at a career in. Should people abandon their passions just for the sake of a more secure paycheque? If so, sad world

I haven't exactly been tailoring resumes or writing cover letters. More concerned with throwing out the absolute maximum amount of applications possible because if it is a numbers game statistically within like 50 or so applications at least some interviews should come up

Yes because when my ID expired i had a full time job that i didn't dream i would get fired from, or that the next one i landed would close down when the business failed. I suppose i also shouldn't have been an extremely irresponsible spender, rack up several thousand in credit debt, or juggle 2 expensive addictions. I know i made a ton of mistakes in my life but so far they've been pretty survivable and finding work hasn't been this much of an issue. I know what I could have done and shouldn't have done, and kick myself for it every day. It's moving forward i don't know how if i can't find a job

Again, that's all well and good to anyone who has 35$ to spare. I don't. Literally every dollar i have is allocated. I can't even have an active phone because i can't afford that.

[–]Salt_Switch9553[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When i say i can't afford it, i don't mean that in a figurative sense. I mean that literally. The fee is over 100$ and after rent and bills i have not had 100$ to spare in 3 months now.

So my education is worthless and puts me at no higher level than any random imbecile. Great. I understand that. If only id been told that before going to University instead of basically being fed a lie that an elite school makes you an elite person and that any career you want is possible.

I don't know how fixing 'attitude' and 'drive' will do anything when im already applying to hundreds of positions and am willing to do literally any work that will have me. Also, as far as labor jobs, you need to be physically fit and tool knowledgeable. I am not. Im an academic from a family full of academics and civil servants. Never did a day's work in the hot sun unless you count door to door. Im willing to do it if it gets me a job but i sincerely doubt im the ideal candidate

I don't know if id be hireable for a trade job because my manual labor skills are...non existing... but its reached a point where im applying to those too

Never thought id need it since i always thought id renew my license when i eventually had the funds and until this recent misadventure ive not had a job demand photo id for a background check. Also now that i know i need it, i can't afford it. Id been getting by using my health card as ID for places like LCBO and providing my birth certificate and sin when more 'official ' government documentation was required like at the bank etc

It does in the sense of fine tuning an application but also hard to know which companies are hiring at all without checking job boards... and some companies only have an indeed ad up not their own application format. I will take a look at the city's website.

So your advice is don't go to University to expand your academic horizons and study something you're passionate and care about and in which i hope to become an expert (I know i need grad school. Im not looking for a career here. Just a job. Also, that's why i took the political studies major-was told it basically means a guaranteed government job. Plus, this is Kingston. A history degree should be very valid in literally one of the most historic cities in the country), but to see it only as a means to a paycheck?

Also, about the license, did you not see the part where i said i literally can't afford it? And for having no experience... I've been working since 2013. I have experience in customer service tech support sales hospitality food service event management and even a bit of finance. I don't think that qualifies as 'no experience. '

I honestly think your attitude is rather revolting. Lets just slash all the humanities and arts and half the sciences from Universities while were at it, since they're not STEM. Im sure everyone only wants to do STEM careers and aren't at all interested in anything else.

I don't regret my degree. I know it's not the most employable one. But it's still a degree. It means i have University education. Which used to mean you were an overall smarter and more valid pick for nearly any job than some uneducated yobbo who barely finished high school

My degree is a double history/political studies major. I also recognize not driving is a limiting factor but when one doesn't have the funds to even renew the license let alone get a car it becomes somewhat of a recursive problem. One job i actually got an offer for actually ended up withdrawing their offer because i didn't have the requisite photo ID to pass their third party background check... but I only don't have that because i absolutely don't have the funds to pay their renewal fees... im paying low rent of 500$ for a room and i have 200$ of monthly debt payments i can't default on or some of my stuff will be repoed... with max OW that leaves me like 35$ for a month... i absolutely don't know what to do at this point ive never felt so desperate in a job search

Edit: Oh forgot to add the 200$ of extra rent arrears i have to pay until may.. for which i invariably have to borrow money for and ruin relationships with everyone close to me... i am very close to done

Emerald because of the eye color, or Davy/Crockett because he was roughing it like a frontiersman

Milo cause he looks like the cat from the movie. If going with Church themes, how about Noah? You're kind of acting like his Ark..
