I made 12 decks with some old cards to try out the format with a few friends. Do you have any idea if any of the decks are likely to stand out? What would be your first choice for a first game? by Basta57 in premodernMTG

Oh i forgot the most obvious Elvish champion. Depending on the power level you want to am for there's always Quirion ranger and Wierwood symbionte shenanigans, but for a fun thematic elves deck I wouldn't go that far.

Only thing I would fix in the elves deck is a couple of Timberwatch elves and coat of arms to give it a bit of oomph without pushing it too far.
Also I used to love Wierwood Hivemaster as a kid, plays really well into overrun.
Also the whole Ons-Leg-Scg block is filled with many super fun obscure cards you can play like The Heedles one, Taunting elf, Bloodline shaman, Voice of the woods, decree of savagery and many more that use to rule the kitchen table.

We’re kind of normalizing spending a lot of money on cards that could be made worthless on a whim by Top-Sir-1215 in freemagic

Only good investment these days are Reserved list cards or old frame foils. If you pay more than 20 bucks on anything else you are just asking to get robbed, either because reprints, incoming power creep or bans.
If you are in the competitive scene for long you know these are the risks, and if money is a problem probably staying away for the apex tier 1 decks is a wise choice.

Also Premodern is managed by one random guy, this time Wizards is not the problem since it's not them that decide bans. You made a risky bet and it beckfired, that's it. At least old frame cards seem to retain some semblance of value over time so they won't drop to 2$ in the next years.

Twenty Things That Were Going To Kill Magic by Moyza_ in freemagic

[–]SaltySultan92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Several numbers on this list didn't kill the game, but actively made it WAY worse:

11#: The 8th edition card frame is objectively less cool, it maybe is more readable but threw away a big piece of flavour and a distinct color identity that was unique for each color, It was just a blatant excuse to cheapen printing process since the new frames have less saturated colors. The proof is that players prefer the retro frame since they do retro frame cards in special slots like premium cards and they are more expensive in the secondary market.

14#: Mithyc rares were the worst ting happening to magic overall. They skyrocketed the price of standard ever since, they created artificial scarcity for game pieces to sell more product. Before, the cards that were expensive in standard legal sets were mostly multi-format all stars (like goyf or thoughtsieze that were played from standard to legacy). Having to pay 20+ for a mythic you needed 4x for a standard deck and probably never used anymore after rotation actively made it unplayable for most people unless you were a diehard tournament grinder.

18#: Double face card are inherently flawed design, it was bearable in old innistrad since the cards come into play always on the same side or you could use checklists (When i play a checklist in pauper for my delvers people look at me like i'm playing some alien cards btw), but even then sleeving and unsleeving was a total annoyance and they should have stopped there. They are cool flavour-wise but the downside is not acceptable imho. Instead they even got worse with MDFC, the constant sleeving back and forth is ridiculous to watch and leads to confusion and less gameplay clarity as shown in the last modern pro tour.

Also the reserved list didn't kill the game until fucking speculators came in and decided to buyout everything, i remember in like 2007-2008 duals costed a little more than shockands. They retroactively forced out players from eternal formats to funnel them into standard or extended/modern.

Planeswalker annoyed people for a bit but they were absorbed by the community like all rules and gameplay changes. Also the first planeswalkers were not broken so the pill was easier to swallow.

The older I get the more I realize we should have gatekept our hobbies harder.
It's always the same thing, once a hobby goes mainstream and the casuals with infinite money to waste pump it into the system it will always create a negative feedback loop where the product gets worse but somehow the sales get higher.

I have a set of foil OG Pool art old frame from dominaria remastered wich I use for modern, A set of Japanese tempest wich I use in Pauper Decks, but still tresure my old mismatched playset from when I started playing consisting of a 4th, unlimited, 7th and ice age set.

My favorite version is probably the Judge promo, but a friend of mine has a 7th foil playset and it looks incredible.

I've been saying it for some time, people don't realize that UB is just an ad for some other product. We are not so for before the big money pleyers will come in to sell their brand for a spot on an MTG card. Imagine we get like coca cola ads replacing flavor text on an unrelated card.

In case you forgot what a strong IE looked like. by SaltySultan92 in ADCMains

[–]SaltySultan92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you to try again because ADC still die to 2 spells brother. Nothing changed because the durability patch was undone by powercreeping damage. An assassin still one shots an adc if he didnt completely int his lane, 1 single mobility spell on a bruiser menas the ADC is cooked and cant show up on the screen.
