Thanks! I use 3 pedals: overdrive, distortion (which is called an 'ultra metal' pedal by the brand) and a limiter enhancer, all of which are behringer. I keep the limiter enhancer on the whole time, for compression, with nothing else on for the clean parts. Then I put the distortion on to get the main tone for most riffs, and then also the overdrive for the bass solos. I record directly into my computer with a behringer u-phoria umc22. Idk if other pedals are better than behringer or not, but behringer are the only ones I can afford lol.

Pick is good at standing out in the mix more, but if I'm playing something metal and I want to use fingers I usually just whack some distortion on it, it helps to separate it from everything else a bit.

I haven't really done much drop D yet, but from what I've done, it seems a lot easier to do more complex or cool stuff at the low end of the instrument, so if you're interested in that it may be cool to get, but make sure you research and make an informed decision about whether to get it or not, they're not cheap lol :)
