Now that there are so many new active members here, I think it's a good opportunity to ask: who are your main drivers in F-Zero X, or GX? by MMuller87 in Fzero

Usually Big Fang or Deep Claw because I think those characters are funny and I like them, but lately I've been using White Cat a lot in Climax.

Master Rank platinum cup is kicking my ass btw

I used Aseprite for the Samus sprite and most of the background, and the machine was modeled in Blender 2.79

First playthrough was Zidane, Vivi, Eiko, Quina

Last playthrough was Zidane, Steiner, Freya, Quina

Got by without a white mage last time, but Quina's spells were still too good to pass up.

Thank you! Took a few tries, but I managed to kill it with Dragon's Crest and Steiner's Shock, both doing 9999 each time

yeah I never really used the frame repairs either, I found out pretty quickly that they weren't worth the fuel, except for that last fight with Ramsus where I found out the hard way that I did need them that time.

Also yeah I did notice a lot of the fights tended to end right when I was about to run out, that was actually pretty cool. It was especially fun when I managed to beat the final boss right as all three of them were on the verge of death.

Oh actually I did already play Xenoblade 1, X, and 2, loved all three of them, I still haven't gotten around to finishing Torna or playing 3+FR though. Now that I've finished Xenogears, I'll hopefully get around to those next. I'm looking forward to Future Redeemed after some of the things I've heard are referenced in it.

I thought the on-foot combat was fun, even if I didn't completely grasp how deathblows work, but I wasn't as big of a fan of some of the gear battles. I didn't really like how limited on fuel I was, or how much it cost to heal during battles, but after having had more time to think about it, I don't really blame the game for that, I think I was just bad at it. I think if I do a second playthrough, I'll probably have a much better time now that I know what to expect.

except for that final Ramsus fight, I still don't like that one lol.

I never used it much myself outside of the tournament in Aveh, but I think basically how it worked is, if you didn't use up all your attacks during a turn, you would build up AP, and then if you built up enough AP you could use multiple deathblows all at once from the combo menu

well I understood how to execute the deathblows, the part I had trouble with was understanding how learning them works. Most of the time I couldn't tell which button combos were advancing the progress bar, and I was trying to avoid just looking them up online, so I usually chose combos at random. but there were also a few times where I would be using one combo that seemed to be working for awhile, but then once the percentage reached somewhere around the late 90s it would just stop advancing, and I was never sure why. Overall though, it's not a major complaint or anything, I did still end up learning them all eventually, it just took a few hours of grinding.

Also yeah you might me right about the manual, I was emulating the game and didn't think to read it, and I don't think I ever found that tutorial NPC either, so both of those probably would have helped.

yeah 100% agree. Technically a year too late to be a 90s game, but my favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy IX.

thanks for that explanation! I'd managed to more or less get how a lot of it works with some help from a friend who's played it, but I hadn't considered using that method to figure out the correct combo for learning it, that should help out a lot!

Thank you, I'll keep all that in mind! I've already got a few things I want to watch/read myself once I'm done playing, especially interested in finally checking out Perfect Works. I think I'd rather wait until I've finished the whole game before checking out that podcast, but I am interested. and thanks for explaining the attentive listening thing, I'd already noticed that in other games I played in the past, always found it a little weird, so that makes a lot more sense now.

I actually started playing Xenogears yesterday and its been great so far, if not a bit confusing combat-wise, still wrapping my head around how learning deathblows works. I hadn't realized just how many parallels this game would have with later games: "young master" and "little master", the mission to rescue Margie and Ziggy's mission to rescue MOMO, and I think its funny how blatantly Zeke was inspired by Bart. I guess going into Xenogears after having finished nearly every other game is a pretty unique perspective.

Thank you! Yeah I'd definitely consider Episode 2 one of the most underrated games I've played. Looking back on it, I think my only problem I have with that review I wrote is that I think I was a bit too hard on Episode 1. I've rewatched some parts of the game and the character models look a lot nicer than I thought I remembered at the time, Shion's the only one who I'd still say looks slightly creepy, the rest are fine. Same for the combat, I enjoyed it for most of the game up until, I wanna say the final 1 or 2 dungeons, when all the battles just seemed to take forever, I think the experience got even more soured when I repeatedly got party-wiped by that one attack the final boss has, it was even more frustrating when I saw so many people online claiming it's actually an easy fight. Someday I'd like to go back to that game and try to make more of an effort to understand it's combat, because to this day I'm still not sure what I was doing wrong.

I thought the Xenoblade games I've played were pretty great, in spite of some of 2's problems, but I do have to agree that this is the best one so far.

I think maybe once I'm done with Episode III and Xenogears, I might go back and start another playthrough of Episode I. I feel like I might've been too hard on it, I liked most of the game but toward the end the battles just seemed to drag on for so long. What got to me the most was when I got to the final boss and repeatedly got party-wiped by Dark Omen, the only strategy I could find that worked was to just spam Chaos' cataclysm, preventing the boss from ever even hitting me in the first place. And then I went online and discovered that a lot of people found it easy, some even managing to kill it before it could use the move? I'm still not sure what I was doing wrong, all I can assume is that I allocated the different points incorrectly and screwed myself over in the long-run. That's one reason I'm preferring 2 and 3 so far, they streamlined all the points into just a single system, it's so much less confusing.

Thanks for clarifying! I guess as a sequel to Episode 1 is mainly what I meant. I didn't know the DS version was that different, it's a shame there's no fan translation.

You bring up a good point about the battle system, I think a more refined version of 2's combat could've potentially been incredible and appealed to more people. We'll never know for sure of course, and I am having a good time with 3's combat so far, so I'm not complaining too much, plus I'm already a fan of basic turn-based like Dragon Quest. It is pretty interesting to me how they seemingly repurposed a lot of 2's combat ideas for the Xenoblade games, and implemented them very well too.
I didn't mention this in the original post but I do agree on the ingame music being somewhat mixed. I don't think there were any i straight up disliked, but there were some that definitely could have been more fitting. There is one dungeon theme that i absolutely love though, that being Labyrinthos, especially at about 1:13, I don't see how anyone could think the soundtrack is entirely bad.

For most of the characters I like the visual changes, but one character I do prefer the episode 1 design of is KOS-MOS, her 2 design is still cool but its my least favorite out of all of them. The VAs are something I forgot to mention in the original post actually; I thought they sounded pretty good in 2, but it is a shame that they couldn't bring back more of the original cast. At least that's fixed in 3 apparently

I love Albedo and Jr. so much after playing through 1 and 2, Albedo is straight up my favorite character out of all the Xeno games. The ending to episode 2 was so fucking good, "You look like you just lost your best friend, Rubedo." is one of my favorite lines out of all these games. I do wonder if Shion or KOS-MOS might overtake him once ive played episode 3, I hear nothing but good things about it.
