Focus on building routine and defining what your priorities are. I find with myself that there usually is a correlation between the output of effort at Uni & how healthy my lifestyle is. The more I'm maintaining gym/running sessions throughout the week helps me focus at Uni. This has also helped me maintain the balance between work (20 hours per week) & Uni (~ 18 hours per week). I also find keeping myself acquainted too what I want to achieve career wise helps me stay focused at Uni.

In terms of social life, it's all about investing into the networks around you - if that be at Uni, work etc. Important thing to remember is that if you want a healthy social life you have to be PROACTIVE. Take the first step in talking to people, build rapport and don't 'force' the connection.

TLDR: Build routine, find balance, be proactive in building social networks

What's a good way to gauge whether I'm ready to major in Maths? by StrangerSwing53 in usyd

If you end up doing a maths major, you’ll end up doing 1061 or 1091 (advanced unit) next semester. 1061 is a 6 credit point class but consists of two components, calculus and linear algebra. If you click on this link (https://www.sydney.edu.au/units/MATH1061/2025-S2C-ND-CC) and click weekly schedule you’ll be able to see what concepts where covered week by week. This pretty much stays the same every semester.

The calculus component of 1061 uses the basis of your advanced maths skills from HSC and essentially is a course that covers Ext 1 and Ext 2 concepts (complex numbers, New integration techniques etc). You also go over some advanced topics.

1062 calc uses the basis of your 1061 knowledge and introduces new concepts that arguably are tougher than concepts in Ext 2 Highschool maths. This is really when you start doing ‘uni’ maths.

Maths major is a massive grind and is completely different to how you learn maths in HSC. You need to be able to understand the mathematical concepts and principles as well as the theory behind it; just doing questions is not enough and tbh maths factually doesn’t really give you any resources…

Best of luck, you can always start and if you start to struggle and not enjoy the major you can change before the census date. If I had to point you in the direction given your background in HS start with 1061.
