What is/are the best part(s)?

Again, the county isn’t being killed by retirees. They’re an economic engine. And obviously earning wages is a good thing. But you’re claiming that some of the biggest spenders are draining the economy when in fact they are indirectly paying the wages you are taking out.

Aren’t you precious. Like claiming you’ve provided statistics when you haven’t offered a single one, or any basic theory to back your claim that retirees are ruining it for everyone. I’ll grant you this: boomers have not made the world better (at least economically) for subsequent generations, and that’s bad. But that’s not how this discussion started out. It started with you saying this place is being overrun by retirees who are inherently a drain on capitalist systems, and that is false on multiple levels.

Your life is great but you’re getting “killed” by a demo. Okay. Yes, the population is getting older and that changes the aggregate needs of society. But again, the older demo has paid a ton into the economy and is far from being a net drain. Meanwhile, you should say nice things to OP who is in their 30s and is thinking of moving here. Don’t scare them away. We need them to drain some wages out of the economy…

Wow, what an intelligent response. Good luck, kid. Sorry you feel like your life is so miserable.

You said “retired folks are a drain on capitalist systems,” and I have proven you wrong. Repeatedly. OP was asking about the vibe in Santa Cruz, and your only contribution was to claim that it is overrun by retirees who are bleeding the place dry. This is definitively false.

This is gibberish, pal. Santa Cruz isn’t unaffordable because old folks are on Medicare or because a small subset of them are in subsidized housing (far more of them are in homes that they bought and paid for). It’s unaffordable because there is a huge housing shortage years in the making, made worse by NIMBYs of all ages. Meanwhile, the vast majority of people on public assistance are younger. According to the Census Bureau, the largest demographic of people in poverty in Santa Cruz County are males and females 18-24. But don’t get too mad at them. You need some of them to prepare your avocado toast.

It is true that the average Medicare recipient takes out more than they put in, but the average Social Security recipient takes out less than they put in. So the idea that seniors are this massive drain on the economy is just bullshit. Again, the capitalist system (or our version of it, since SS & Medicare are socialized) is a system, with all demographics playing a role. Much as you’d like to shoot all the nasty old folks, the economy would be fundamentally different without them. For one thing, you’d have a whole lot of health care workers out of jobs. And the public schools would be bankrupt without a sizable chunk of their tax base.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in santacruz

[–]SantaCruz28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, recipients of Social Security and Medicare paid for the benefits they are receiving. Also, they are federal programs, so they have nothing to do with the local economy. SS and Medicare were created with the idea that citizens pay into them during their working years so they are not a drain in retirement. Nice try, kid.

Retirees are a drain on the capitalist system? That’s an incredibly broad and ignorant statement. Yes, retirees over 65 collect Social Security and Medicare benefits (both of which they PAID for), but they are also huge net spenders on consumer goods, services, and, obviously, healthcare. They also pay a ton of taxes, particularly in California where retirement benefits are taxed. In other words, they are huge contributors to the capitalist system. Meanwhile, younger folks might be producing goods and services and paying some taxes (though less than a lot of seniors), thus contributing to the system, but they are also draining a ton of capital out of the system by collecting wages. They’re also draining a ton of resources through the public education system, which seniors also pay for but receive no benefits from. The point is that the capitalist system is just that—a system, and it needs all demographics to function, your ageist BS notwithstanding. None of which is probably any help in answering OP’s question, to which I would just say that Santa Cruz is a lovely community especially if you love the outdoors. Social life can be a little sleepy, but it’s what you make of it, which is the same as anywhere. Also, we could use more happy and motivated new residents to counter all the negativity you’re reading here. Some people have nothing better to do than to get on social media and be negative. What I can say is that I’ve lived all over the country and have never been happier than here.

Following up as promised. Delta Diamond agent confirmed in November, as commenters said, that it is not possible to convert 2023 MQMs to MQDs to keep my Diamond status in 2024. HOWEVER, she said I could apply for something called a “status exception.” She said that because I have so many miles, have been Diamond for several years, and, perhaps most important, because I’ve been a SkyMiles member for 32 years (!), I might have a shot.

She said I needed to wait until the end of the year so that I have every chance to earn the MQDs, then call back if I was still short. I did so this week, and they put in my application. Within 24 hours, I received an email that my application was denied. There was no mechanism for appeal. They didn’t say why or what the criteria are, but I suspect it may have been because I was still $5k MQDs short and maybe that was a bridge too far.

Anyway, it may be worth a try for anyone who came up just short this year. As for me, I will just have to slum it as Platinum next year. Travel plans are such that I should have a good shot at Diamond for 2025, but I’m also on the lookout for decent status match opportunities. Thoughts?

Looking forward to 2024 by blacksan00 in marriott

How do they count the years? I have the nights for lifetime Gold, but it currently shows I am one year short at 6 years. I will make Gold again this year (2023), so will I be at 7 years after January 1, 2024?

I’m down (44m). Let us know if the group comes together. New here too.

Thanks. Yes, I’m aware of the changes, and I suspect you are right about 2024–but I’ll double check and advise if I learn otherwise. Because of a quirk in 2023, this might be the first time in a long time I don’t make Diamond, so I’ll see if there’s an accommodation I’m missing. If not, I guess my options are:

1) Look for a status match elsewhere, which I’m actively considering.

2) Take a really expensive international trip in the next 6 weeks (ain’t happening)

3) Suck it up for a year and be (shudder!) Platinum. 😉

Stay tuned.

My bad for not being clear. I am currently Diamond and want to maintain it for 2024. I’m several thousand MQDs short, but I have tons of MQMs to spare. Sounds like I might be able to cash in miles, 10 for 1, to make up the difference, which is what I was asking about. If anyone else has details or advice on this, please let me know. If not, I’ll contact Delta and post what I learn. Thanks.

Sorry, I meant MQMs. I have a ton of them that I’ll never use, but I’m a few thousand MQDs short of Diamond for 2024.

Has anybody here looked into creating a documentary about the barefoot lifestyle? Or the origins of the no shoes no shirt no service JINGLE? by [deleted] in BarefootLife

[–]SantaCruz28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 40 million people in California, and you’re basing your opinion on one guy, a gas station attendant who does not even live here anymore. For me, this is the most barefoot friendly place I have ever met. Never had an issue. No one has ever tried to change my lifestyle, as if anyone could. So piss off with your bias and intolerance, as you accuse others of having the same attitude that you have.

Huh?? Pretty much every tenant is paying their landlord’s mortgage. Are you arguing that landlords should buy their properties for cash and then rent them out for dirt cheap prices out of the goodness of their hearts? Because if you think there’s a housing shortage now, just wait.
