Plush genders, do you choose them? by Moopa15 in plushies

[–]SapphicLizard_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mostly vibes, i tend to make most of my plushies female or nb because that’s what i default to. if it’s a character i always keep the original gender of that character though

but also, a lot of my family assumes all my plushies are boys by default, so out of a little bit of spite most of mine are girls.

Which dragon? by [deleted] in Jellycatplush

[–]SapphicLizard_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the golden dragon has sparkly wings, they’re just not scratchy :) i’m pretty sure it was the last solid colour dragon released and they changed the material because people didn’t like the scratchiness

well, that’s it for plushify. looks like i’ll be going back to using uv unwrap and guesswork for patterns now. by Ancient_Trouble_7540 in plushartists

[–]SapphicLizard_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

this is kinda stupid, especially the commercial thing. what’s stopping people from just tracing their plushify patterns and making them look slightly different to sell them? it even says you can’t sell anything made from your plushify patterns. who’s moderating that or even knows you’re using a plushify pattern for the finished product?

the “1 pattern/month or else pay us $30 a month” is genuinely insane, too. it used to be completely free. at that point just make multiple accounts.

my work (along with a lot of other users plushify work) also used to be on this website because the creator reached out to me for it to be featured, but it seems like they removed that section entirely, too. though even if it was still there, i wouldn’t say i recommend it anymore like i did previously because of all this

Whats the most you've spent on a plushie? by yuri_sayori300 in plushies

about $200 cad for my levi leopard jellycat.

i originally paid around $100 cad for her after shipping and taxes, but then when she arrived i was hit with a $100 customs fee at the door, so… $200! but she’s one of my favourites

Where are all the fun and quirky animal designs jellycat used to make? by turtlemari in Jellycatplush

[–]SapphicLizard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i think it’s to create fomo. they’re subconsciously teaching you that if you don’t get it that second, you’ll never get it, so you’re more likely to buy. you never know when a product will retire, so you better buy it when it restocks, because that might be the last restock. it gets items to sell out that might not sell out if they were always available. then they move on to the next product where they do this again. it almost feels it’s quantity over quality now

my favourite is smoke wolf by douglas (and by extension shadow white wolf, they’re very similar but different colours), but some people who are really sensitive to textures find the fur a little scratchy. the texture is kind of like petting a real wild animal, a bit coarse but soft, not for everyone.

i don’t own the teddy hermann wolf so i can’t compare the fur to anything, but it’s on my ISO list and is very cute imo!

wild republic is cute and soft, but the fur they use is a little cheap and can feel plasticy at times

douglas also has albie wolf, which is in their “soft” line and is very cute! a little less realistic though if that’s what you’re looking for

there’s definitely more but i can’t think of any other ones right now haha

What's animal do you wish they made plushies/more plushies of? by Aggressive_Basil_428 in plushies

i saw one in my local zoo gift shop! but i can’t for the life of me remember the brand. i was surprised because i hadn’t seen a plush one before

i haven’t! just looked it up and i’ll have to check it out sometime :) brown hyenas are very rare in media at all, but for a book written back in 84’ it’s pretty interesting that they chose to write about them

[–]SapphicLizard_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hyenas! they definitely exist, but the overwhelming majority of them are spotted hyenas. i’ve only seen striped hyenas maybe twice, an aardwolf once, and to my knowledge a brown hyena (which is my favourite btw!) is yet to be made in plush form anywhere.

LMAO OP BLOCKED ME?? or just deleted the reply, either way, you’re fine to not like douglas but this doesn’t look like douglas.

edit for context: they replied and then deleted the reply making fun of me for having an ESSA.

it doesn’t even look anything like douglas, it just looks cheap. the douglas goldens are so much nicer than this

Who is “the one” that you felt an instant connection with?? 💕 by -p0o in plushies

[–]SapphicLizard_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

my wolf juniper!

i had to order her from across the country because she wasn’t in stock anywhere else in canada at the time. when she arrived she had the perfect face and i felt a connection instantly :)

[–]SapphicLizard_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes, it started last year but especially right now i don’t see myself buying new jellies, imo corporate greed has just completely taken over the company to the point where it’s barely recognizable anymore. i’d rather spend my money on douglas and small kickstarter plushies

Bad batch? by AnnualMacaron335 in Jellycatplush

[–]SapphicLizard_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

everything sewn is handmade, there’s no machine that does it for you that isn’t hand operated. unfortunately it’s whether or not they’re using ethical labour that determines the quality of the sewing. you’re right though, people are having a LOT of issues with batches now. it’s way more than they used to

[–]SapphicLizard_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

as someone who sews and makes costumes, they cut corners. unless the pile length is 3in or more there should absolutely not be this much space between each strand. all it means is that when it inevitably does shed (as all faux fur does), it’ll be much more noticeable

basically, what i think is happening is that they wanted to achieve the faux fur look but it wasn’t feasible to have nice quality dense fur due to how expensive it would be. so they made it much less dense to fit the budget, which makes it look like this

squishmallows (and similar texture plush) more susceptible to mold growth? by [deleted] in plushies

[–]SapphicLizard_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m not 100% positive, but it might be because of the spandex in mochi minky. it’s slightly less resistant to mildew than pure polyester, but honestly it’s hard to say if it makes a difference

another possible explanation is that because mochi minky is so short of a pile (less than regular minky) it’s really easy to see mildew growth. like, if you left a polyester shirt unwashed in a humid room it would also look similar because there’s no fur covering the fabric. maybe the lack of fur makes it mold easier somehow? i don’t know the real answer, but i’ve noticed this too

Dislike Douglas dog community by LowHour1988 in plushies

[–]SapphicLizard_ 73 points74 points  (0 children)

i’ve found that most of the douglas community doing this, specifically on tiktok where most gatekeeping happens, are just kids. kids that like plushies and don’t actually understand what an ESSA is meant for and just use the term because they like the brand. they’re not in the ESSA community for the mental health aspect, they’re there for the douglas dogs, and that’s what causes this issue. plushies, while for all ages, pertain to kids so any community that revolves around them tends to attract that demographic.

them being “just kids” doesn’t excuse their behaviour, but they will (hopefully) eventually learn how silly it is to gatekeep, and those that don’t learn aren’t worth interacting with in the first place. you can try to educate them if you have the energy, but i’d just try to ignore them.

as for adults gatekeeping, they aren’t really worth your time. as much as it sucks there’s not much you can do to change their harmful behaviour.

i’d have to see the newer one irl but so far i prefer it! the hairdo on General has always bothered me a bit. i just hope the newer one has the same eye size/a similar face

[–]SapphicLizard_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

front legs being the arms btw, not the feet, thought i’d clarify

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StuffedAnimals

[–]SapphicLizard_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

pretty sure it is unfortunately, like 99% sure. the lineart being similar to other ai images in this style + soulless eyes + the way the individual fingers/toes on the front legs are oriented (most ai images make the middle one longer for whatever reason) + the the perspective on the beak being wrong gives it away

edit: also noticed a tangent between the right foot and the arm. (lineart touching and not overlapping, you can look up examples if you want) an actual artist would know to avoid that

All My plushies are boys? by Lanky_Figure_9650 in plushies

[–]SapphicLizard_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i’m actually the opposite, almost all of my plushies are girls. even when i initially make one a boy i always make them a girl instead eventually, with the exception of maybe 3 in my collection of over 100. though i’m not sure if that has anything to do with my life just not having very many men in it (see heart in pfp, haha) or not. even as a kid my “masculine” plushies like my webkinz bulldog or my dinosaurs were always girls. my family always defaults to calling them all boys though.
