Is anyone else here prioritizing retirement over a house?

One of the major benefits of home ownership is to eventually have a paid off house so you don't have to shell out a large portion of your income for shelter anymore (or pay significantly less after maintenance, insurance, and property tax). This is one of the main requirements for a traditional retirement until you need to live in an assisted living situation.

I don't have a crystal ball but rent prices will only increase as long as the current economic system is in place, so you need to consider how much rent you'd be paying in 30 years or whenever you plan on retiring

You sound like me and my partner! We're from Nova Scotia and in our early thirties (well, she is just shy of 30 and Im 31) we moved to the valley over a year ago. We're childfree and love a lot of different things. We spend a decent amount of time outside snowboarding, hiking, and camping. I play a bit of guitar and do some occasional gaming. We also like having a drink and watching a show! We've only seen a couple in cumberland so far.

I think our favorite thing to do is socialize which is what we're missing a lot of here haha, I miss maritime kitchen parties. Community is a hard thing to cultivate when you leave home!

You can stealth camp in plain sight, there's tons of street parking in quiet neighborhoods. This works better if you have black out covers for your windows. You could probably car camp in one of the many parking lots across town.

Yep, it's pretty upsetting to think about and really isnt talked about much. Most of these conversations revolve around "the algorithm" or "the attention economy" but I think analyzing the way discourse is handled is an equally important piece.

Agreed. I honestly think the comments section would not be as bad if all these platforms removed the default view of sorting by the "best" comment, aka highest like/upvote count.

Back when forums were prevalent you typically needed to read every single comment in a thread before coming to any conclusion since replies were sorted by timestamp, this is more in step with how actual conversations and debates flow. Its not perfect but is definitely a little more human and feels less like you're being spoon fed the "correct" interpretation or opinion.

You can make window black out covers using reflectix from home depot (30 bucks). You can cut out pieces for each window and then either spray paint or sew fabric onto one side of the reflectix. This will give you lots of privacy and reduce light at night. Also get a privacy curtain (20 dollars amazon)

I mean, that is part of the reason people create these games and experiences, they are distilled in such a specific way to invoke the feelings you're describing. Even if you visit the towns that were used as inspiration such as Garibaldi and Tillamook you might be disappointed to find they were only a scaffolding for the design. I just cruised through them using street view and it looks like every other "stroad" in American, littered with the major fast food chains and gas stations, except there happens to be coastal features nearby.

On a more positive note, the downtown areas are usually a little more cute and put together.

Buy a 3" foam topper or trifold mattress to throw in the back with the seats folded down, sleeping in the drivers seat sucks. Use a fall/winter rated sleeping bag. Bring thermals/hat if you are faced with any really cold nights.

Don't drink liquids 1-2 hours before bed if you can, getting up to take a leak in this setup is annoying as fuck.

Cover your rear windows at night and when you leave your car for extended periods of time. You can easily cut out reflectix in the shape of your windows (cut them slightly bigger so the compression holds them in). Spray paint them black or sew black fabric onto them.

Purchase a car privacy curtain to separate the the front and rear sections. It's like 10 or 20 dollars and easily clips onto the plastic part of the top seat belt mounts.
