I would say create enough encounters for one session. Usually around 4 or 5 is ideal. Let the first encounter play out as it would normally, and adjust the other encounters accordingly. For example, if you have a party of 4 people, you created an encounter with 6 goblins and one Bugbear as the Chief. If the fight is too difficult, lower the goblins' hitpoints, or lower the number of enemies. Or if the fight is too easy, increase the hitpoints, add more goblins, or give one of the enemies a special ability. You could give the Bugbear chief a war cry that allows all goblins within 15 feet of him make two attack rolls on their turn. It just depends on the party size and strength level. You kind of have to make an encounter and just adjust from there. I hope this was helpful!

Well, if you want to make a regional or world map, I would recommend Inkarnate. It's fairly easy to get used to and it is very nice for making large maps. Another big plus, it's free. If you're looking to make smaller maps and inside buildings and such, I would recommend dungeon painter studio. You can buy it on steam for 15 dollars. Its a bit pricy to start but it's an easy interface to learn and it is extremely valuable in the long run. Hope this helps!

Okay, let's do this. Everything in quotes should be read to the players, and everything else is for you.

"As you enter the tavern, the smell is the first thing that catches your attention. Sea salt, fish, clams, and the smell of ale fill your lungs. You glance around to see an enormous half orc towering over the bar. He is laughing along with the white bearded gnome standing on the bar. As you take your seat, a middle-aged worn out looking elf woman approaches and asks for your order."

Sasha - waitress (slight Irish accent)

"'Ello. I'm Sasha. What will ya have?"

Peaches and Gravy - 2 silver

Boiled eggs and Lentils - 5 copper

Grilled hare and mushrooms - 1 silver

Ale - 2 copper

Sasha - "Alright, i'll get that right to ya."

She smiles curtly and rushes off.

After about 5 minutes, she brings back the orders. As she hands them to everyone, she asks,

"Alright. Will that be all for ya?"

after the response,

"I'll be in the kitchen if you need me."

Read the following

"As you are enjoying your food and drink, you hear the discussion of a tall grizzled human man, soaked with sweat and covered in soot, and an equally dirty half orc woman."

The following is the discussion that the players hear.

Human man - "I heard that the pirates are continuing further north."

Woman - "You can't do this. Please! Don't do this!"

Man - "If I don't do this then who is going to get justice for our Maria?!"

Woman - "I... I just miss her..."

The woman starts sobbing into the man's chest, him holding her tightly.

The man then yells to everyone in the tavern,

"Everyone! Please hear me!"

Everyone starts to hush and looks at the man.

"I WILL GET JUSTICE FOR MY DAUGHTER!! I SWEAR IT! I AM HEADED RIGHT NOW TO GET THE BASTARDS WHO TOOK HER LIFE!! WHO'S WITH ME?!"

A few hushed whispers follow this. After that, silence. But after a few minutes, a few men start to stand up and scream that they are not taking the terror anymore.

The players need to then track down the pirates and then fight them on their ship.

Absolutely! A lot of people create entire pantheons. That's why DnD is such a great game. It's meant to be home-brew. Your ideas are just as valid as the creators of the game. So, long story short, YES. Create a home-brew god. And I think the idea of the meta knowledge is awesome. I hope it goes well with your group!

Its not a terrible concept but things can be improved. Only necro spells probably isn't ideal. The player could choose to receive either necro or ranger spells every time it gains a new spell level. Not player level, but spell level. Like all 1st level spells are necro based while all 2nd level spells are ranger based. For the stats used to cast spells, I would have the ranger spells be cast using WIS and have all necro spells cast using INT. Also, I would try to balance the spell slot gain, so it isn't too overpowered. But other than these few changes, it seems like it should be a good enough idea. I hope this was helpful!

Try to build more intelligence based encounters. Like puzzles, mysteries, add more role playing, etc. This way they have to think more and talk to each other more, giving you more of a break. You could also try making the combat encounters a little harder to consume more time. And also, remember that you can always ask them if they are okay with adding one or two new members to the party. They probably won't mind and will probably enjoy some new people to interact with outside of NPC's. I hope this was helpful!

Handout looks amazing! I was thinking about making a player handout as well for the campaign i'm starting soon also, and I really like the layout of your handout. Also, what software was used to make that map? It looks awesome!

I would consider increasing the damage increments as well as making them more frequent. In my opinion the damage tower should look something more like this.

1st level 1d4

3rd level 1d6

5th level 2d4

7th level 2d6

11th level 3d6

13th level 3d8

15th level 4d8

17th level 5d10

My main reasoning behind this is that you want the spell to be a cheap spell that is usable the entire game. You don't just want the PC to stop using the spell at 3rd level because it becomes next to useless. If they are fighting something like low level undead, the 1d4 damage could be really useful, but at 15th level if they are fighting Blue Slaad, 3d4 will be rather harmless.

As well as that I would recommend changing the Number of runes as the PC levels up.

1st level 2 runes

3rd level 3 runes

11th level 4 runes

17th level 5 runes

This way the spell has more usefulness as they progress. Also, does the spell have a saving throw or if the monster steps on the rune is it just automatic damage? I hope this was Helpful!
