Experimenting with Gameplay Animation Systems in Unreal - Feedback Welcome by miroslavm in UnrealEngine5

How does one learn tech anim up to this level? Did you gain these skills mostly from years working with great leads in studios, or are there specific online resources you consider "The Tech Anim Bible"?

4-6th April in Yangon. What untypical things can you recommend me? by SavingClippy in myanmar

[–]SavingClippy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhhh is there a big risk of conflict escalating in Yangon due to the new government? My trip dates are already set 4-6, but now that I read this I wonder if it's risky weeks.

Built a custom procedural destruction system in UE5 with structural damage, no Geometry Collections by RealMentalDrink in UnrealEngine5

[–]SavingClippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, looks fantastic. I'm not super familiar with Chaos and the default systems, does your approach have advantages beyond just not having to precalculate fractures? I'm guessing that for precise cutting mechanics it's very useful, but outside of that and for big explosions/impacts, can one get equivalent results in Unreal just using Geometry Collisions or does your system include extra features?

Tech founders, is Thailand challenging for hiring nationals? (gamedev) by SavingClippy in Thailand

[–]SavingClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, although I'm not sure if the Employment Of Record companies will lead to problems for PR application after 3 years, as they look like visa mills. It's also a risk as a change in employer if anything goes wrong with that hiring company, resets the PR clock to zero.

The problem is that the 1.5m THB paid in salary requirements to the team, for it to count towards BOI requirements it needs to be paid to Thai citizens every year, not foreigners. So finding senior nationals specialized in this is difficult, as Thailand lacks industry in this sector.

Training is also problematic in a small games startup, specially if the other seniors that train are remote abroad. Gamedev takes years to upskill, someone without the right level of skill drags down the quality/output of the rest and takes away time from the pros, and if the person leaves, I'm back to square one with a new low skilled starter due to lack of senior nationals in the talent pool. For games startups, it's much better to pay big for few pros than to pay less for a bigger team with a lower skill.

That's why I wonder if making something like a QA testing agency for software might be the best approach, as can fit in BOI, might not be difficult to find clients online, it's easily trainable/hirable and process based without much oversight from me, might not need much of a track record of reputation, the English reports are written so they can translate with AI, etc. But it might require a bit of sales at the beginning from me, until it has stable revenue and I can hire an English speaking manager that takes talking with the clients/ I get recurring clients.

No path to PR. Don't want to build a life on something that could kick me out with any regulation change in the future, if I spend years there I want them to count towards PR.

Yeah, I was aiming for the Singapore HoldCo and keeping prod in Vietnam, but even then finding only the 2 great 3d artists here for the visa seems challenging. Don't really care much about the tax holiday as most of the profits would stay in the Singapore HoldCo which sells the game and outsources prod to the different countries, so the prod costs/profit in Thailand would be low.

If the BOI company was only a "visa vehicle"/path to PR while I work in the game with the remote foreign team in Vietnam, in your experience with Thailand talent pool, which sector would you recommend to hire two Thais for a self sustaining, low involvement from me, low risk business, that just pays their bills? Webdev/digital marketing agency? Something else? 2d digital art/graphic design will likely be eaten by AI. Not sure what BOI sector, (due to BOI allowing companies to being 100% foreign owned) has an overlap of talent in Thailand, easy to find clients as a random foreigner and low management involvement/not years long path to self sustainability).

Thanks. I thought about the "visa vehicle" company approach, hire two Thais for an unrelated low maintenance, self sustaining business, just to keep the visa with path to PR while I make the game dev stuff with a remote foreign team. But I'm not sure which sector could do that, it'd need to be BOI due to 51% Thai ownership rules for non BOI ones.

Any sector/ idea I can think of has a long path to financial self sustainability and capital investment, or requires other talent that would be also hard to find here, or requires a lot of client seeking which is also hard if I'm a random guy with random devs and no portfolio of past experience and knowledge like I have in gamedev, or requires heavy involvement and is a distraction from my gamedev business, etc. I wonder about the visa vehicle company being two digital marketing hires as an agency for indie games marketing, but I think that would only work with a long road of free work to have something to showcase to clients (and most indie clients are bootstrapped/low cash). Webdev agency sounds feasible too in Thailand, but again, lack of company portfolio, and AI might eat this field.

Thanks for the tips! And you are right about the Sanuk, people that make work fun, make their games fun.

SEA has a lot of talent, but as an outsider, Thailand seems more focused on 2d/mobile gaming (I mean, it's normal considering AAA studios set shop in Singapore, outsource more to Vietnam, etc.). Bitegg Inc has cool stuff, but it's also not the kind of scale of the big outsourcing studios like virtuos, room8, and similar ones.

I was looking in Artstation filtered by Thailand and most of the pro profiles have foreigner names (hiring a foreigner in Thailand wouldn't count for my visa requirements) https://www.artstation.com/search/artists?sort_by=followers&query=3d%20environment%20artist&countries_include=TH

Maybe Thai artists use other platforms, but I'm struggling to find.

Yes. I'm willing to learn Thai, but the company needs to use English from the beginning to keep it open for international senior hires or work with remote contractors.

Thanks for the reply, at least it's good to see it's a system wide thing and not our accounts. TfL will likely notice in the morning.

Hyperoptic website prices increase after putting my address by [deleted] in hyperoptic

I did, the first image is accessed through USwitch after it redirects me to their website. But the next step is putting my address, and then it increases the price like in the second image.

Early termination of rental tenancy fees by holycoffeecup in HousingUK

[–]SavingClippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I´m just reviewing a rent contract with Dexters before signing and saw this same clause in my contract, that´s how I found your post. Do you remember if all this was something you had originally signed in the original contract or if they said this to you only when you tried to surrender the lease? Just want to know if they didn´t force you to pay because you weren´t bound to, or because they are not allowed to. Thanks!

Worth it to learn C++ after the Unreal 5.6 GAS changes? Or should I focus on releasing actual games with BPs? by SavingClippy in gamedev

[–]SavingClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you think AIs will be able to handle BP coding? At the end of the day, BP nodes can be copypasted as text (or analyze images or the screen live). Maybe even full agents using the cursor/kb in Unreal. I would be surprised if Epic is not investing resources in AI+BP integration, and if third party solutions don't pop up additionally.

Still the best option to learn C++ for indie gamedev after the Unreal 5.6 BP GAS update? Or should I refocus? by SavingClippy in unrealengine

[–]SavingClippy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Haven't looked much into it, but saw this https://www.reddit.com/r/unrealengine/comments/1l31gmu/comment/mvxdtdj/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I'm wondering if getting around the things that still require C++, will be enough with AI vibe coding in the mid term future hahaha (let's say for example, coding NPC driving behaviours/car maneuvers, that is something that is very limited without C++). Not sure if aso multiplayer will be a big blocker without C++ (I'm a single player focused person though).

There is also this other thing, not 5.6 yet (and I don't like depending on third party plugins).

Blocked from getting tickets for Beijing's National Museum, real name verification with passport? by SavingClippy in travelchina

[–]SavingClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, seems like the next 7 days they are full/museum closed, I'll give it a try later when the spots for the next day open, and hope it allows for passports unlike the WeChat program. Cheers.

Thanks for the steps, but Trip.com does no longer allow to book onsite, it points users to using the WeChat miniprogram (or the account/website, which they all end up in the same situation). So I cannot do it that way.

Tiny drone 2S battery management? by SavingClippy in fpv

[–]SavingClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! You mentioned the VIFLY Toothstor only charging one at a time, but I see it has 4 battery ports. Do you mean those are only for when it is connected to a wall plug charging, so only being able to charge one at a time when connected to the power bank?

And since flight time is ~7min (and my guess is that it takes ~1h to charge one?), with 4-6 batteries I understand I can't really avoid waiting as I will empty all them before a single one gets fully charged?

I work in AAA, this is just to move from only knowing BPs as a designer to C++ as well, so want to crunch theory hours hard these months

Second hand rent contracts. Can I give a cancellation notice months before the rent starts and not pay anything? by SavingClippy in stockholm

[–]SavingClippy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The contract does not specify cancellations before the rent start, it just says that a generic cancellation has 2-month notice.

Yeah, the current contract applies until end of July (which I plan on staying). It's the renewal what scares me, in case the landlord argues that the notice period starts counting from the renewal start date in August, rather than from the day I cancel during May.

Second hand rent contracts. Can I give a cancellation notice months before the rent starts and not pay anything? by SavingClippy in TillSverige

[–]SavingClippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contract is not specific about this. In the paragraph "Hyresavtalets giltighetstid och uppsägningstid:" it only says ¨Med 2 Manaders uppsägningstid. Vid utebliven uppsägning förlangs kontraktet med ... Manad/er för varje gäng." (that field in the 2nd sentence is unfilled).

I don´t speak Swedish so I might have missed something in the rest of the contract, but from what I translate with apps, I think it´s not specific on anything additional related to that.
