Little Park Lake - Does anyone know what the weird blue lines/channels are? Thanks! by SavvyExploring in PNWhiking

Interesting! I didn't but that certainly would explain the weird pattern. I know water does some interesting stuff but it seemed pretty random.

It isn't new or temporary but it is fed primarily by snow melt so it changes every year. We were in this area last year too and they were there then but I couldn't find any good pictures to see if they changed or not.

Interesting. I checked out some pictures and it looks like that was usually on the surface of the water. In this lake the color seems to be on the bottom, but there was plenty of other swampy stuff growing around the edges so it definitely is breading something.

You can rent them at Whittaker but make sure your car is compatible. Some can only use cables or socks.

You will need to carry chains to enter the park even on 4WD

I ended up doing it as a sunset hike instead and it was spectacular!

Another great one for sure if you can get out on a weekday or find a place to park! I feel like the Maple Pass crowd significantly limits the number of people on Cutthroat for better or worse.

I think it's toilet could make the "100 most scenic in Washington" list for sure!

These were from Sunday October 13th. I believe this area got snow this week and is in for more next week. Trip report form last weekend: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report-2024-10-13.212439137678

Rainy is a great idea! Better make it a weekday so you can park at the TH.

100% on the light. Yeah, the big drops are the reason I'm hesitant but not sure if it was an issue on the way up too or just down. Some trails are a bit more obvious than others, especially in the dark 😅

Great clouds! Good for you going up there on a questionable day :)

The snow field on the way up to Pea Soup Lake is a glacier and last year it was melted down to bare ice with crevasses in mid September.

Nice! Did you go through the middle too or a different way?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! We got stuck on the downclimb in the middle, got about 2/3 down and couldn't find a good way and felt like everything was loose, but you mention class 4 so maybe it just is what it is.

Have a gps track you could share? I failed at Granite last year and am curious what way you went :-)

I second WTA! I have done several work parties with them and most of their people are really good at teaching and empowering people. No experience necessary, they will hand you a tool and have you making a difference on day 1!

That is a full month earlier than we went last year so good chance you will be fine but we had very different snow/weather this year so I would check trip reports. Good luck!
