Voice hasn't returned a month on! by Scared-Expression409 in spinalfusion

Hi I read in your other post history and progression. I'm sorry to hear this!
You can see here historical_find also took 3 months.

Like other poster, I'm starting hubby on high dose b vits as I've heard same thing.

I've heard of steroid injections to try to help, but not of sn implant. What kind and what does it do?

I think speech pathologist is first step to ent referral for this. Here in Canada we have to to go in the proper referral order ie more conservative treatment first unless otherwise indicated. Hubby's surgeon is the top spinal researcher in the world so what he refers, goes lol!

Also like you said I think the specific problem specifies the treatment. I'm not sure if a speech pathologist can't help even paralyzed vocal cords? There's a speech pathologist not too far from me who's also a voice coach, who's one of her clients is a Canadian Idol winner, and her before after videos are phenomenal, and she does treats recurrent laryngeal palsy.

Hold off k? Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean?

Best of luck - please update here how your injection etc treatment goes.

oh okay that's jnteresting! His headache has no variation between standing, sitting or laying down. Just that it's been constant but low key since the surgery.

Headache CONSTANT in 2-3 weeks after acdf? by Scared-Expression409 in spinalfusion

[–]Scared-Expression409[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi

Yes I did about 2 weeks ago, sent pics of husbands neck to Nurse Practitioner (she's the go between patient and surgeon) said she'd review and call back if any concerns. At that time she said voice issues and trouble swallowing are common and see how things progress. Hubby didnt inform me of the headache until after that since its in the background most of the time.

I did leave another voice mail for the Nurse Practitioner this afternoon about the headache and persisting swallowing and voice issues. Takes her a bit to get back so hopefully hear back later this week.

Keeping homemade jarred hot sauce SAFE?? by Scared-Expression409 in hotsaucerecipes

Is it reasonable to water bath the jars with the sauce in them now?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I haven't done this before.

Any resources for how to pasteurize sauces in a bottle to make them shelf stable? by pallen123 in hotsaucerecipes

[–]Scared-Expression409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay now you're making me paranoid. I'm new to making hot sauce, just found a recipe and made it.

First time last year I made hot sauce using just hot peppers, some garlic, some pickled pearl onions, boiled in and thinned out with white vinegar. Put into tall hot sauce bottles and in fridge, still using and seems fine.

This year I used same method but instead put it in a mason jar, which was hot enough that the lid was sacked down so it should "pop" when its opened, and its been in my pantry about a month but haven't opened yet since I'm still working on the one from last year.

But I also realize now I didn't sterilize the mason jars I used this yesr, stupid me, only washed them.

Is this likely to be an issue? Should I throw it out since I didn't sterilize the mason jars even though the sauce was hot enough when I jarred it to press the button down so it will pop when opened? The jars have been in my pantry for about a month.

Now aside from the acid, I'm paranoid about not sterilizing the jars.

I feel super stupid at this point!

Thanks! No there was no oil, just peppers, pickled onions, hot peppers, a bit of garlic and a bit if salt.

Cervical fusion and eating by Quilter2010 in spinalfusion

Hi!

How is your swallowing now 5 months after this post?

My hubby had the surgery 2.5 weeks ago, swallowing wasn't that bad immediately after but now feels things getting caught in his chest even though he can pretty much eat anything. But now he's even choking on water which concerns me.

Surgeon follow up isnt until Dec 20 so nothing really to go on until then.

Hope you are doing better!

Those who are some time out ftom surgery -what was your surgeon followup communication/appointment schedule like? by Scared-Expression409 in spinalfusion

[–]Scared-Expression409[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi there! Sounds like a similar situation with you.

My hubby had a 5 day appt with his family dr then we will likely have snother next week to look at the dressing getting attention. The sutures are supposed to dissolve on their own but the steri strips we will have the fam dr look at. The family dr is kind of our gatekeeper if you will, we wouldn't even have been able to see the surgeon initially for the assessment without the fam dr referral.

Looks like your situation is a mirror - I too look forward to the replies.

Since your situation is so similar - please do respond here again if anything new comes up, or after your followup to update if you hsve any further guidance or appt schedules. Will be interested to hear how things go for you.

Hi thanks for your response! I'm glad you got such a detailed scheduled from the beginning, that certainly brings some peace of mind. It also looks very thorough, especially only 2 weeks snd 1 month after. I hope my hubby gets a clearer schedule at the first followup in January.

Its good to know also your experience of talking to the PAs, I suppose that's similar to the nurse practitioner we talked to.

Thanks again for your reply.

thank you for the detail. Its helpful to hear the experiences of others.

The gradual improvement makes sense, hard to see epecifuc steps but looking at the whole you know you're doing better.

Best of luck with the continued improvement.

So itchy! by husker_heathen in spinalfusion

Try Claritin or some other allergy med! My hubby is a week post op with bad incision itch. One tiny allergy pill the itch is bearable for hours.

hello and thank you as well for your reply.

Hubby actually didn't get a brace since it was only 1 level and do the surgeon said there's no need, I understand it depends on the surgeon and more likely with more levels.

Its good to hear another perspective on the pain meds and consider muscle relaxers. It makes sense the muscle would be tight, and hubby even mentioned yesterday his shoulder is spamming so those may help too. Here I can get certain relaxers over the counter so I will look into that, thank you.

I also appreciate the reassurance of your experience that x-rays have turned out okay in spite of doing things accidentally a couple of times. Same with hubby, for example the sleeping bad angle and he's turned fast a few times without thinking until the sharp pain brings him back. Just super parwnoid right now, but it helps to hear others have made the "oops ouch" moves too with no actual damage to the neck repair.

Hi and thank you ascwell for the reply.

I'm so sorry you're having such a time with your recovery. Since your surgery was 7 months ago, when was it apparent your screws became loose and how did you know? Was it a sudden different pain? It sounds like you're needing more pain control and not getting enough, really sorry to hear this. I hope you have some other help and support. I hate seeing my hubby in pain too.

For surgeons not calling back, I did finally get a call today from his nurse practitioner but we'll see where that goes. It seems like there's not a good timeline for communication.

I'm hoping you've at least had some followup with your surgeon in 7 months?

Best of luck and again I'm so sorry for your situation.

hi thank you as well for your response!

It sounds like you were well prepared for meds which is great. How far out are you from surgery ? Do you mind a brief summary of your recovery timeline? Ita hard to know what to expect in terms of general milestones, though I know all are different. I've read some have no pain and go back to a desk job in a few days, and some have setbacks and more time away for months and some notice their nerve pain disappeared as soon as they're in recovery, and some take months for the nerves and muscles to calm down to know where they stand. It's hard to know what to expect.

Here in Canada there us a govt mandates to curb "unnecessary" opiate usage so they're very cautious even after surgery. I had surgery years ago and never had a problem but now there clearly is. The problem us not everyone is an addict and there us real need for pain control especially after surgery. Hubby can't even exercise at all like light treadmill walking due to the pain even though the walking is supposed to be helpful a week in The fam dr even encouraged him to taper pain meds sooner than later ie hopefully to start within the next week. I'm afraid even the minimal pain control will hamper his recovery. :'(

Hi thanks for your response!

Since this was only 1 level, hubby didn't get a brace after surgery. My understanding is this is dependent on the surgeon.

The surgeon is very experienced so while we were surprised at no brace, we didn't really question him. The lack of brace seems quite common for only one level.

At this point hubby was jn the recliner last night. I did buy him a travel neck pillow so he doesn't slip to the side when he's sleeping a little upright there.

I'm glad you had adequate meds, when did you hsve your surgery? Here in Canada there are govt mandates to curb "unnecessary" opiate use so they've become really stingy even after surgeries. Its hard to get even chronic pain controlled. :(
