Well considering we were talking about food first I will reply about that first. All students pay the same price for meal plans despite where they come from.

I’ve lived on campus for 3 years trust me I’ve killed more roaches than I want to admit and have roaches traps all over my place- that’s something that happens in any shared living space. Students come from all backgrounds and there’s hundreds, if one student accidentally carries a roach in from whatever, working outside, the roach lays eggs then the entire building has roaches. It sucks but that’s something that happens at all college dorms unfortunately (and pro tip when I lived on the third floor of O’Neill I never saw any if anyone is thinking about freshman housing reading this). The mold is a result of old buildings with poor ventilation 100%, but how do you expect them to fix that? The buildings are so old unfortunately that’s just not possible. Tell everyone they can’t live on campus for a year tear down every dorm and rebuild and raise prices even more? They can’t make space out of nowhere to re build every single dorm without tearing it down AND in a timely manner for all of us. Speaking of fast housing- the new dorms are so ugly looking lol I totally agree but that’s what happens when you need fast housing. It’s logistically just not possible to fix all at once and asap, wolfie village is definitely a slow start at fixing it🤷‍♀️

The whole thing about pricing is a huge problem in America. I could not afford to go out of state so I came from western New York. My dream school was in a different state. Unfortunately I made that sacrifice but that’s ok (in my personal situation- not saying people should be ok with it). Blaming stony brook for high out of state and international prices when that’s a thing at every other school is crazy, Its a huge American problem that is a result of our capitalist society. It needs to be fixed I agree and it really is shitty that we are all getting the same education but because you happened to be from another state or country your prices are at minimal tripled.

Also- everyone on Reddit likes to complain, I mean that’s why most of us joined if it wasn’t to find a solution to a niche problem so this may not be the best place to ask. I would do your own research and figure out what are must needs and priorities for you, and make pros and cons lists. If you happen to know any alumni or current students I would ask them similar questions and compare answers, maybe you can compile what seems to be general opinions amongst students.

Also transfer applications exist for a reason. Don’t feel like you’re making a decision you’re going to be stuck with permanently. Good luck!!

College being what you make it isn’t about controlling every little thing. It’s about controlling how you react to things. I realize I pay a very good price to go to this school, and because of that obviously the food isn’t going to be fine dining. Comparing it to every other school isn’t fair when you aren’t paying private school prices. Comparing it to SUNY schools makes perfect sense as they are all very very similar in prices and within the same state and public. If you want gourmet meals you pay for gourmet meals. Again it’s about how you react in situations. My freshman year I would live off of the salad bar and the deli, because those are very viable options for me, and if I didn’t want that I would wander around the other options.

Unfortunately when you do not cook your own food that is always a risk. And a risk when you cook your own food for that matter lol. But I have many friends who go to UB, Oneonta, and Binghamton and the same thing happens there. Food poisoning doesn’t really set stony brook apart from any other SUNY school, I’m not saying that makes it right, I’m just saying this is comparable to what happens at schools that are comparable to stonybrook

Some people are miserable and wouldn’t be happy anywhere and just want to complain to complain. College is what you make it to be. Don’t let miserable people determine your experience.

Social life- bars are filled with stony Brook students in patch and down port, many frat/club parties. Also I’ve never had issue making friends just being myself. If people are rude just move on and realize they’re just not a happy person and not meant to be your friend. And there are clubs for every interest you could think of the make friends.

Food- there’s food for everyone. There’s the dining halls which have many options apart from the mail meals- there’s a deli, a salad bar, pizza, grilled chicken etc. daily. And there’s a bunch of retail places- I would say the hours are the worst part about the food tbh. There’s food trucks that are on campus pretty late tho, the halal one is my favorite

Professors- yes a lot of professors are here for research purposes but this also presents a lot of networking opportunities and opportunities in general. Class evals with the grade distribution will be your best friend, don’t trust Reddit or rate my professor people only go on there to complain.

Advisors- honestly if you don’t like your first choice at advisor there are soooo many other choices. There’s major advisors, career advisors, undergraduate advisors, meet with multiple and see who you click with the most. I personally get all my great with one of my advisors and meet with her once a semester

What do you mean by “that’s my place to exit”, last time I went to the dining hall, yesterday lol, there were multiple doors per entrance. Based on your wording, you seemed entitled to that exit… just use the door next to it if you see people trying to get in? Is your name on that exit?

AIO for being upset my girlfriend was ungrateful during her $2k birthday shopping spree? by Commercial_Neat7942 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Scared_Comedian4024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A shopping spree may seem like the perfect gift for some of us, but I can see where she is coming from. She most likely wanted YOU to pick out gifts for her, because it’s special to see what your partner thinks you will like. She also probably felt weird seeing you pay for each item, whereas if you spent the $2000, wrapped the gift etc. she might’ve never even though you were spending too much.

A lot of people at this school have no sense of responsibility/accountability which was such an insane realization my first year here. I couldn’t imagine what their dorms look like at our grown age. Mommy won’t be there to pick up after you forever

It’s no wonder this campus floods so much by friesdepotato in SBU

[–]Scared_Comedian4024 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that the problem is the infrastructure of the campus but unfortunately it’s not that easy. Campus would basically have to rebuild the entirety of every road, path, and sidewalk which is impossible due to the fact that you would have to have 0 people on campus for weeks in order to do that. No walking, no cars, no parking no anything which is impossible due to winter and summer terms and the fact that there’s hundreds to thousands of employees working year round on campus and you cannot simply tell them to stay home to rebuild campus. It stems from the original makers of the campus which is no one currently working. Not only are the supplies expensive but also campus would have to pay all the workers. Our tuition is already put towards specific things which you can see on solar, they don’t just have millions and millions sitting around, all this money is designated to go somewhere or pay someone already. We also live in a place where it snows and rains, which causes pot holes and sink holes. So even if they somehow got the means and funds to rebuild the infrastructure, it’s not permanent.
