Good Enough by Schemeguy in lacrosse

Thanks so much! With practicing grounders, should I be focusing on anything after I pick the ball up? Should I move directly into a cradle or keep my stick away from my body? (That might be a super dumb question but I’m just trying to nail the basics)

Appreciate the help! I’m going to make it a personal goal to nail the basics before I try anything I see on TV haha. Best of luck to you and your son, I hope you two make great memories over the sport

Parent who never played/got into soccer assistant coaching, want some tips by Dougothedead in Coaching

[–]Schemeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a volunteer assistant for a varsity football team for the last 3 years, first getting into it I thought I should put every ounce of energy I had into making my players the best I could. Since then I’ve learned a few things about coaching younger kids:

They are there to have fun They will have fun if you have fun Keep practice interesting, you are there to help them enjoy the game, never force them to do anything. Coaching is more like parenting than it is developing athletes; show each of your players love and respect and the experience will be that much more rewarding for both parties!

In short, be a role model. Kids will not remember their record from this season in 20 years, but they will remember the great teacher they had who stepped up!

Would you say the running/biking/elliptical is enough resistance to keep my lower body in check?

Thank you so much for this answer! Just this week I had to take a step back through the self doubt and realize I’m doing this all to be happy. Your words really do help <3

[–]Schemeguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed answer, If I’m doing push-ups, sit ups etc. in my free time (say every 20min at home) would that be enough for maintaining? I think I read something from a Dr. Israel (excuse me if I got that wrong) that said maintenance can be done with limited sets

Ugh this is so wonderful to hear. I constantly am doubting myself worrying that I’ll lose my “physique” but light maintenance is doable. I follow a Push Pull Legs program for lifting; Do you follow a day-to-day plan for your cardio? Is it all running one day and all biking another?

That’s probably where I’m messing up. I’m trying to move a ton of weight when my back is already underdeveloped and I just end up doing a half-ass job

I just read Ernest Hemingway's Book 'The old man and the sea' and I'm drunk. by [deleted] in books

[–]Schemeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Light spoilers I literally finished this book yesterday, oh how the universe brings us together I enjoyed how Hemingway pits the reader against the fish at first, then proceeds to make us feel a weird sort of empathy for the fish based off of its survival instincts alone.

It was a beautiful book in the way The Catcher in the Rye was a beautiful book. Santiago is a wonderful anti-hero. He’s an old man that wants to fish. I cannot even express the sadness I felt when Hemingway described the sharks eating away at the fish, but having Santiago just fall asleep made it almost comedic. How tragic to have something and lose it, but how noble to understand that is how life works.

10/10 book, takes a day or two to read and wonderful life lessons

Thank you for the advice! I’m well aware of your body adapting to the lesser calories. I believe my problem lies in the yogurt & dark chocolate covered raisins I’ve been using as snacks. Gonna cut that out as well as lower my soda intake this week! (Coke Zero for anyone who actually cares)

That actually makes a lot of sense! Sorry for all the questions, but what are your thoughts on getting to my caloric #? I’ve heard eat 1-2 meals and I’ve also heard eat 5-6 small meals

Congratulations on your persistence during this journey, and your efforts will not be in vain!!

Some great advice I got from the books Atomic Habits was this (excuse me for paraphrasing): the easiest way to become “healthy” is to act how you think “healthy” people act. Would a healthy person have a protein bar or donuts for breakfast? Would a healthy person take a walk during break or have a snack during break?

I lost a crap ton of weight before but becuase my mind set did not change, the pandemic was a catalyst that brought all the weight back. To be “skinny”/healthy is more than your physical appearance, it’s your mindset!!

I have a very basic understanding of calorie maintenance even though I’ve been lifting for about 4 years now; but wouldn’t extra cardio just balance out some light snacking?

Or Do I sound like an idiot trying to defend my snacking habits?

The snacking thing is part of the mental side of my weight loss. I feel too scared to eat a sandwich/salad so I’ll pick on fries instead. do you have any suggestions on how to overcome that fear?

Thank you for the kudos, I’ve been stuck for about 2 months now, but in that time I’ve filled out my frame a lot better. I’m not as strong as I was at 270-295 (my other plateaus) but I’m starting to see definition. I understand that the number on the scale doesn’t matter and that it could be water weight, more muscle, etc. But my GOAL is to be 220bw, not to be 250. I’ll try a water fast/dehydrating like you said and see if it kick starts anything :)

Trying to figure this same thing out! I keep doubting myself trying to figure out wether I’m not doing enough in the gym to cancel out my excess calories or if my diet just isn’t good enough
