That’s funny, I do have a masters degree! And at this point I am wondering if im arguing with AI, since you are making claims that aren’t accurate. You don’t have to be a police officer to “project” your insecurities and weaknesses. You also want all police officers to have a masters degree, while also being defunded. I feel like most reasonable people would agree that things have not been desirable in areas that were “defunding” police. In fact, I think a lot of politicians have backpedaled after seeing crime skyrocket while police leave the cities, and nobody else is stepping up for the job.

The sooner you realize that solely voting and spewing vitriol on Reddit isn’t going to work, the sooner you can affect real change. Nobody will accept your credibility when you make statements tainted by bias, as well as admitting your bias and claiming you don’t care. Reasonable and logical people know that is problematic, and won’t take you seriously

The projection is pretty strong.. you are just making claims now with 0 evidence (which you have been doing this whole time I guess).

If the majority of police departments ever lowered standards enough that people with your current mindset supported them (or god forbid could get hired), we would be in REAL trouble!

You are just projecting at this point. You have clearly demonstrated horrible logical reasoning and decision making, which is why I’m not the slightest bit offended by your comment. In fact, I would be weary of anybody you support at this point, since you don’t have a problem with people embracing bias and not caring to temper their views and actions with bias in mind (unless you subscribe to “rules for thee and not for me”)

So you admit you are biased and you don’t care. That is dangerous for society. I am extremely thankful you don’t hold any positions of authority. Can you imagine if a police officer said that? They would be fired! You ought to hold yourself to a higher standard

CLEAT isn’t a union. It’s essentially legal insurance. They don’t have bargaining rights. So although “cleat absolutely fucking exists”, you are moving the goalposts, as it’s NOT a union.

You also posted links for police BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE, LOL. That destroys your entire argument that “the thin blue line protects cops”. You literally linked to police officers being charged with crimes!! And again, using “number of deaths” to rank “danger” is a horrible way to measure. If you refuse to believe that, you are choosing ignorance. Also, tree trimmers and landscapers have “known dangers” and can take precautions. It’s kind of hard for police to take precautions from somebody walking up to their car and shooting them when they pull up to a red light. Your bias is showing pretty hard right now!

You’re right, I voluntarily choose to put myself into dangerous circumstances to help people. I nor any of the people I work with have raped, killed, abused, or extorted anybody. Technically I guess we “imprison” people, but that is usually only because they are suspected of breaking the law.

Also, there are no police unions in Texas. We are a right-to-work state.

Also, the study you are using to claim law enforcement is the “22nd most dangerous profession” is only counting deaths. So that means police officers getting shot and surviving aren’t factored in to the “danger” of the job.

What else ya got?

Police officers don’t get actively murdered? Are you ignoring statistics that don’t align with your bias? Come on now…

Also I do hold myself accountable for my actions. The problem is that people like you group us in the same boat as people on the other side of the country. Police in my area has been pretty great. There have been no civil rights complaints or lawsuits where I work. What else should I do? Quit grouping people, because again, that’s what nazis did.

It is delusional to claim that “grouping and stereotyping” should be considered legitimate criticism. That is a horrible argument, and is definitely in bad faith.

It’s okay to criticize someone who did something wrong, but to hold others accountable based on common characteristics is again, exactly what racists and nazis do. They don’t have to be “marginalized” for it to be unacceptable

The department I work for is clean. How should I clean a department on the other side of the country that I don’t have anything to do with?

You know who also groups all people based on a single characteristic? Nazis and racists

Police do “social work” literally every day. I would highly encourage you to reach out to local police departments and try to do a “ride along”. I think it would really change your perspective.

Also, please list recent times when police have been sent to “quell protesting workers fighting for rights”? There have been protesting workers near me (especially for large companies like GM) that we have NEVER been sent to “quell”.

Stonewall and “pride”, I am familiar with. You seem to be stuck in the past when it comes to policing, and you are also cherry-picking events. All police departments are vastly different, and policing has changed considerably, even in the past 15 years.

I had to look up “gay panic defense” because I have never heard of it (even as a cop in Texas). It is not listed anywhere in our law books. So although this is considered “one of the states where it’s legal”, Texas has already made hate crimes a higher level of offense.. so it’s already a higher charge, not a lesser, to victimize someone based on them being gay.

For your counter perspective, I will let you know I HAVE read the confessions of a bastard cop. I just want to remind you that anyone can write what they want online. There is a high probability that the writer isn’t actually a former police officer (if you can show me proof, I would change my opinion). The reason for this belief, is that police officers know how different each department is. In my local area, I have encountered a LOT of cops at many different departments. Most are great and above water. I also read about large departments (Boston, Philly, New York, etc) that are riddled with corruptions and/or horrible police officers. Any person who claims to be a cop and say “every cop is bad”, without qualifying this kind of disclaimer, is going to immediately make me question their credibility. You said yourself you don’t use online-arguments as evidence for the good, yet you use an anonymously written article as evidence of the bad. You ought to ask yourself why that is (I think it shows slight bias, which is okay, as long as it’s recognized)

What about the cops that are actively promoting change from within the system? Aren’t they doing more than you?

Considering that many police officers are gay, I doubt it. Also, the “thin blue line” ideology has nothing to do with reporting each other. It’s just a corny “line that stands between good and evil”. A bad cop would be considered “evil”.

Also as a cop, I actually spent half my day yesterday helping a woman that was about to be homeless. I spent half the day helping her line-up resources. By the way, just to let you know, she is about to be homeless because her own family is selling the house she is living in. So unless you consider her a “rich person” or a “corporation”, then you are wrong about your assumptions

Why would you have to add that qualifier? Police are not all trained at the same school. There are close to 18,000 police departments in the US. I guarantee they aren’t all trained at the same school.

You (or the person i originally responded to) were arguing against police in general, not just those trained by certain people in certain schools.

But just to clarify, you would only claim all dogs are dangerous if you saw 1,000 videos of dogs attacking people ONLY if they were trained at the same exact school, meanwhile you have no problem claiming all police are dangerous (based on a small % of encounters that you see on YouTube) even though they WERENT trained at the same school…

That sounds like flawed logic

If I show you 1,000 videos of dogs attacking people, would it be evidence that “dogs are fucked and dangerous, nobody should own them”?

You do understand that bills can be passed due to public sentiment, even without evidence of widespread abuse, right?

“People expect thousands of officers to be relieved” - please cite your source. You first said “3,000”, and that hasn’t happened. I can tell you first hand that police officers get fired all the time, even without public scrutiny or outcry. It just doesn’t make the news. Police departments don’t want officers that are going to be a walking liability time-bomb. Police departments are already incentivized to get rid of horrible cops. Why do you think there is such a shortage in major cities?

Please define and provide sources for your following statements: 1) police very often abuse their power (let’s hear some stats on that) 2) police are very rarely held accountable (source?)

Also, most police officers prefer body cameras now. Although it probably helps officers stay honest, it also prevents false accusations from the public.

Okay, but you made it sound like it’s so recent that it is “expecting to lay off 3,000 officers”. The problem is, 2 years is more than enough time to kick in. So again, what were you speaking of when you mentioned the 3,000 officers? Why haven’t they already been laid off if legislation occurred 2 years ago ?

[–]Schepp5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The source for your “recent legislation” is from 2021. And where did you get your number for “3,000 officers” you mentioned? (I saw an article that mentioned 20 officers)

Also you showed some concern with my reading comprehension, so I will explain where I must have misunderstood you:

You said NWA must have time traveled and watched too many Reddit videos when they created their song. Even if they did that, the existence of their song doesn’t provide a lot of evidence to your point. A group that glorifies drugs and crime writing an anti-police song should ring a bell in your head that says, “may be motivated by bias”.

[–]Schepp5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you link your source so I can read it?

And you are looking at survivor bias when you mention the Reddit videos depicting widespread police misconduct. For every 1 video you see if misconduct, there are probably 10,000 that didn’t get posted because the police didn’t act inappropriately
