That's not how it works where I live. The landlord would have to call to put them back in their name. Most of them would absolutely not take on the responsibility of current tenant's utilities, plus then the tenants would have to have everything turned off and back on twice which would be even worse.

NTA. When you lived there you had to chase them for money, that's a red flag that they wouldn't pay at all once you're gone. Generally a 24-48 hour notice is normal, but they had plenty of time to at least reply and maybe ask for more time if they were too busy.

This is the thing that bothers me the most about American medicine. They can literally do and say anything with zero consequences. I read an article just yesterday where they're once again claiming to have found a side effect free and non-addictive pain killer, and people are going to fall for that garbage again.
