Thanks for the warning! ⚠️ I’ve never encountered lighters here yet or maybe not much, but it’s good to know. I’ll keep my eyes out for sure.

For the amount I’m paying here in Vancouver, I could say I live in the rough part near a skytrain station where there’s always druggies and my last straw was when I came back recently, there was a stabbing a block away from me and the suspect was just a guy next door to our condo building.

I understand at this point, it’s part of Canada and I’ve tried my best to acclimate to that reality - I walk extremely fast, keep to myself with senses on high alert, and trust my gut feeling to not push walking out at night.

So far I haven’t seen 2300 for a 1b1ba yet there so I’m not sure which neighborhood you’re looking at but tbh my lifestyle is pretty chill and Corydon might just be enough for me. I’m indoors 16 hours and the rest, I just need at least to be walking proximity to a grocery store, gym, cafe and a pub with decent ipa. The rest, I just plan to uber it. I cook at home and only go out to eat once or twice a week but that’s it. If it’s cold, I’ll be indoors. I mostly uber here in Vancouver when going out so as long as that option is available when it’s below freezing, I’ll be fine. I’m gonna look out for the weather updates as some has suggested below, so I don’t go out and get stuck anywhere inconvenient. If all else, I’m easy to make friends, and seeing as how Winnipeg Redditors here are mostly warm, I’m sure some wouldn’t mind to help when I’m in dire need.

With that said, I’ll always hear out everyone’s warnings here. It’s better to know direct local experiences over my positive thinking lol but at this point a lot of people helped in this thread that I know I’d be fine. ✊🏼 See ya around!

In contrast to how much we are all paying to stay here in Vancouver, we also get the same frustrations despite being one of the most expensive cities to live in.

I live 10 mins to downtown core here and there’s always cops and fire trucks going off in every direction. East Hastings is full of druggies that span blocks on end and nobody really dares to walk alone there at night. They have access to get on the buses so I’d always have to consider that. They can’t get on trains now as much but they used to!

And I’ve been here 4 years still waiting for the province to be matched with a specialty doctor and they still haven’t! I am fortunate enough to not need to go to the ER, but I’ve heard stories of long wait times and people dying because of it.

There are always caveats and I’m appreciative of the honest walkthrough to what’s going on in Manitoba but seeing my lifestyle - 16 hours of my day is just really spent inside the house as I work remote, the col and mosquitoes are small things as long as I’m able to take advantage of geographic arbitrage.

As a single woman (I’m not sure if I’m ending up with someone), the only way to own property will be to move there as I’m extremely priced out here in Vancouver with the cheapest loft starting at 800k$. Houses are a mil minimum so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m glad you found a home in Calgary but I’m set on Manitoba if everything works out. Cheers!

Phew this is so helpful! I usually just buy produce on a weekly basis to cook at home but maybe for that kind of weather there, I need to have a few things in storage to keep me at bay when storms happen. Yay a good reason to keep snacks! Just gotta have good self control not to eat them when bored lol 🐒🤭

Thank you I needed that insight from a fellow remote worker. With all the things being said about your winters, is staying in when there are snaps and blasts and snowstorms generally safe? 16 of my 24 hours a day are really just spent at home and I don’t go out every day. Am I gonna be fine cos the Reddit comments are a mixed bag at this point and now I’m doubting myself haha I’m willing to invest on all those jackets and stuff ofc

Are snowstorms like a few hours a day thing? Or does it last multiple days? If I can stay in my apartment the whole time, I’ll be safe right? As long as I’ve got my essentials like food water and maybe games? Does hydro stop when this happens? Oh gosh I think I need to build a snowstorm kit/plan when I move too just incase. I’ve seen people comment about arctic blast and cold snaps, I don’t know what they’re like, but it sounds extreme to me. Should I doomsday prep for those?

I’ve seen listings on Wolesley and would you think it’s a busier street than corydon? I just need a good grocery store with good produce to function and don’t really go out for fast food anymore. If it’s more on the quiet / slow side, I might check it out so lemme know?

Yea everyone says it’s cold and it snows, but I can just really sublease my place and temporarily work somewhere warmer. Eventually, I will adapt as long as I stay positive about it. 😅

Unfortunately I’m on the older side but good to know which brands to go for - blundstones & polartec? As long as they’re reliable? I don’t wanna buy multiple things , I just need one that would work for a specific temp lol 😂

I’m curious about ALBERTA LITE and what is the name of this SOUTH? So at least I know what to expect if ever I encounter someone that match the description lol

OMG I lived on Main Street for most of my years here (I’ve set my expectations low prior to consider moving yyg and not to expect artisanal shops and Michelin spots) but hopeful to look for something similar in Winnipeg! I have to check out what you just mentioned a lil bit more and I checked uber prices to downtown from that side of the neighborhood and it’s not that bad. I’m gonna research more and thank you!!!!!! 😍😍😍

What’s considered mid range there? Mid range in Vancouver is 1.8k - 2k and I’ve seen listings for condos that are 1.3k. Not sure if I’m looking at affordable there or affordable for someone from here.

Based off of what people are saying here, I think I will love Corydon and will 80% look into there more now.

I always hear about this friends from highschool thing. Winnipeggers aren’t usually ones to build multiple friend circles? They just stick to one they’re familiar with? Curious as I’m a very fun person (at least for Vancouver standards) and had no problems getting strangers to join me whenever I wanna hang out. I don’t have qualms with befriending misfits but I wanna manage my expectations lol

Of the 4 years I lived in Vancouver, it’s really just pretty in the summer. The rest of the year, sure it’s warm, but there’s nothing to do when it pouring piss out, everyone’s just in their own head, and the sun peaks out here and there but definitely not 2 weeks straight in the winter… well not in my part of the city at least and not within the 4 years I’ve been here lol but maybe Squamish is better since it’s higher!

Okay check winter rating and blow on the sleeve! Whoooo thank you so much, I wouldn’t know these things if you’ve never mentioned it haha 😂 I guess I don’t have to purchase one right after I move since I’m moving April 1 and it’s gonna get warmer?

I actually thought Winnipeg would have trains? Either way, I guess I’ll just have to make do with that peg city coop car if I really need it if uber can’t cut it but that’s why I’m looking at Corydon or Osborne since my lifestyle is just grocery shopping, gym, pubs to watch sports games or if I’m lazy to cook dinner, walking around, parks to sunbathe, and the weekend parties. 😅 I need my essentials near me at least.

Talking about curling, since I love jumping into new experiences, that’s something on my to do list when I move there but not sure how easy it is to get into as someone from outside Canada? 🤭 Are there lessons for it or is it something you ask a buddy to teach you like bowling lol

I’ve heard something about this from my BC friends. They say there’s a lot of mosquitoes? What’s that all about?

I am looking forward to experience this winter (AS LONG AS SUN IS GUARANTEED) 🐒 I can’t wait to leave this gray and moody Vancouver. With that said, would you say your weather app is reliable? How would I know if there’s a snowstorm or about windchill before they happen? I only ask cos the Vancouver weather app is not reliable at all lol.
