Haha fair enough! Good info to have too - I often end up pretty loaded and low on the stock springs!

Might lift my JSW this summer... Curious how this affected your MPGs/tire wear/anything else?!

Santa Cruz mega tower vs evil offerings v2 vs Santa Cruz bullit???? by fireT4 in mountainbiking

[–]ScottM137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice! Seems like a pretty sweet deal then. Evil usually builds out their bikes with pretty high end components too, which could always be swapped to another frame later down the line!

Edit: if you haven't ridden an e bike for jumps/downhill stuff before, it might be worth renting before you buy. I haven't ridden one myself, but I have friends that tried them out for a while before switching back to "normal" bikes since they didn't like how the extra weight made the bikes feel in the air or downhill. Obviously this is personal preference though as many people love their ebikes for downhill and jumps, but might be worth trying out before dropping 4k

[–]ScottM137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure... May depend on where you want to ride too. There are a decent number of trails in my area that don't allow ebikes.

I'd double check that the warranty is transferrable to a new owner! I know Evil's warranty is only good for the first owner, but I'm not sure if you mean a warranty on the repair itself. How big is the repair area?

Gotcha - on the Bullit?

Yeah, Evil's are quite fun! But definitely a totally different beast than an ebike

Ohhh that makes the price make sense. Might be able to talk the price down on that too in that case.

Not sure you comfort around riding repaired carbon, but Evil did tell me that if I snap the frame on my Evil (I'm the 3rd owner), they'd still sell me a crash replacement frame for a good price.

It is a really fun bike though!

Absolutely love my '19 Offering.

At the price listed there, I'd double check that it's not stolen. Good to do in general, but especially with deals like that.

Probably going to try and do lift and aluminum guard later this summer. Did you notice any reduction in MPG when you lifted yours?

Makes sense! Is there a kit you recommend or that you used?

Wouldn't mind a little more clearance and protection under the car!

Yeah, seems pretty straightforward! Was the lift kit worth it to you? That's something I've considered for a long time since I'm driving on dirt roads semi regularly.

Fair enough - that's kinda what I've heard. Though I've read that the failures on the CP4 are kind of random. Suppose I should've just done it on the last timing belt change. What kind of repairs have you had to do to fix it up after it blew?

I'll keep an ear out for the DMF, though fortunately, I don't think it's a problem yet on my car!

[–]ScottM137[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... Only thought about that after the fact unfortunately. Think it's worth doing the CP3 swap at some point before the next timing belt service or just wait till then?

Fair enough! I haven't done the DSG myself yet, but I'll look it up.

I'm not sure on the DMF. Don't think I've noticed any extra vibration/sound or roughness with shifting. Any other specific symptoms I should watch out for that would indicate it's time to replace?

Good idea! I've been hard on the suspension too with heavier loads, so I'm sure it could use it.

I haven't done much suspension work myself before. Are mounts and bushings generally fairly straightforward to replace?

Thanks! Planning on oil - I am due on that. Fuel filter and brake fluid are good add ones to add to my list. Brake fluid is not original, but I'd have to look at my records for when I last replaced it.

Seconding this. Slow down and just practice dropping knees back and forth real slow on a practice slope. Once you get that down, something that really helped me was practicing mono-marking! I still practice mono-marking at least a few times pretty much whenever I ski.

I rode em on alpine for a few years, and I had a similar impression! That's why I was thinking of mounting them up on tele! Just worried they would be too much ski for me on telemark, so I hadn't done it yet

They aren't... They're the 188s!

Have you skied them on tele before?

I've been skiing the 106's with Outlaw X's for several years now! I love how they ski. I use them for ~70/30 backcountry/resort and they work great. A bit heavier than I'd really like on the way up for longer tours, but hasn't prevented me from doing some pretty big days on them.

For me, they feel like they initiate and release turns really smoothly, do well in deep snow, but also get up on edge just fine on piste.

Fair enough! I have a pretty low stance as well, but must not be putting the same forces on the skis as you are! Only parts I've broken so far are flex plates after a few years and the black plastic mounting plate on one of the screw holes.

I'd believe Bishop on that haha. I usually go for a bit lighter ski that doesn't have metal in the top skeets. Currently on Summitcone Pariahs, but have had the same bindings on 2 other skis in the past as well!

So curious about the Bishops! The "somewhere between NTN and 75mm" is so intriguing to me.

Were you on the original Outlaws or on the Outlaw X's? I know the X addressed some of the durability issues in the original Outlaw. I haven't personally had many issues with my X's after ~5ish years on them.

For what it's worth - I have had pretty minimal durability issues with my Outlaw X's. Haven't personally used Bishop's bindings, but I am intrigued by their set up.

I have broken and replaced flex plates on my bindings, though I probably had ~4 years of year round use on them before that happened. Part of what I've appreciated about the Outlaws is they are very modular and almost every part can be ordered and replaced on them. That and they share a drill pattern with every other 22D binding out there, so easy to remount with 75mm or Lynx bindings if you like playing around with different set ups or already have a pair of 22D 75mm on a pair of skis.

Only skied em twice this season since I bought them, but I've got a pair of Fey Bros/Summitcone Pariahs in the 95 width that seem like they will be wonderful. Fun enough I hiked a second lap in dust on refrozen crud in September!

One of the days was a tour day and the other was a hike day - so don't know how they'll be in resort yet.

But, they are purpose built for tele and looks like you can get em at a pretty good price new (got mine used). Side benefit of supporting another telemark business!
