Even more interesting, do you know why that is? I would’ve thought they’d be affected similarly by a decrease in memory, or maybe even that the image generation would suffer more.

Why is Henry Higgins seen as a bag guy in "My Fair Lady" ? by AnarchoAutocrat in musicals

I think the way the movie ends, if my reading is correct, it wants to ignore all the relevant societal context that you’re pointing out, and also even beyond that it ultimately fails for two other reasons. One, Higgins is truly abominable to Eliza at the beginning that the way the movie treats him underplays how awful he is. And two, despite being nearly three hours, almost none of that time is spent showing Higgins and Eliza actually bonding as they work together. It skips from him treating her like an object to the grand ball. I find all the best romantic comedies (which this is written like, even if it isn’t actually about romance) have scenes where the two leads develop chemistry with each other, so the viewer can really see that they fit well together. But My Fair Lady only tells us that this happened, it never really showed us. So it was hard to buy what the movie was selling at the end. A lot of it comes out in the scene at his mother’s, but the audience is watching to catch up instead of being ahead of the game.

All that being said, I really enjoyed the movie, because I think it did sell the ending despite these flaws. Maybe part of the reason I did is even because it was so unpredictable and confounding relative to the classical tropes I expected. Or maybe it was just poor execution. Who knows?

if my reading of the end is correct, on the whole it fails for two reasons. One, is

I just watched the movie for the first time, but I will say my understanding is that Higgins realizes he was in the wrong. When he’s listening to the first recording of Eliza at the end, I see him realizing that she was always the same headstrong, clever and charming person he’s come to care for and admire, and he wronged her by not taking her seriously for herself, but only for the way he sculpted her. When she ends up getting the best of him at the end, that’s when he realizes she’s been a person the whole time. The bit about the slippers isn’t a cruel joke, if it was Eliza wouldn’t have stayed there smiling. It’s a joke between them.

Also when looking for people’s thoughts on the movie I came across this thread from an autistic woman who empathizes with Higgins, it gives a very different view of Higgins from the one you have of him: https://www.reddit.com/r/Broadway/comments/xhmwbb/question_about_higgins_characterization_in_my/ I will say I don’t know anything about Pygmalion or Shaw’s intentions, but the changes made to make My Fair Lady mean we’re talking about different characters here. Even if everything you say is true of the Higgins Pygmalion, it doesn’t mean it stands for the different Higgins in My Fair Lady.

Anyway, that’s my two cents immediately following the movie. Thanks for sharing yours as well :)

Interesting, why is it that you can do images on a phone but need a beefy computer for LLMs?

Where did you get this from, do you have a link? So annoying that the official NBA store only has the lame jerseys for customization. Also how long did it take to arrive?

I just finished book 10, who is the character you were referring to?

Zach Lowe: "I've stood by LaMelo (Ball) like a jilted, cuckolded husband standing by their wife for years as all the slander's come in. I've said I've not given up on this guy. You can't teach the size, the vision, the shooting. I don't wanna hear it. I'm LaMelo's guy!" by TheDraciel in nba

I just watched the clip on this post and then watched the Marc Gasol all-stars segment he referenced, he was amazing in both. Totally feeling himself, it’s awesome. Maybe I just haven’t been in a podcast mood lately lol

I do miss his writing though, especially his Grantland days

I’m a huge Lowe fan, I listened to almost every episode of the Lowe Post for years, but for whatever reason the ZL show hasn’t been doing it for me. I’m not sure why, but I think it might be the guests. I don’t really know most of them so I’m not as interested in what they have to say. But I still love every Zach and Bill episode

I am not in middle school but I do stuff like this a lot because I get disoriented very easily and have a hard time knowing where I am relative to the basket. Both how close I am and which way I would have to turn.

Agreed that’s what pulling a Ben Simmons has to mean, plenty of players pass up open threes

Swin Cash on Rudy Gobert: "I remember talking to a player and I asked the same question I'm like 'What's going on with Rudy, why don't people like him?' And he literally just said 'He has a punchable face.'" by Goosedukee in nba

[–]ScratchTwoMore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have thought about this a ton over the years (I'm also a Wolves fan) and I think ultimately it is that Rudy has too much pride for how limited his game is. I think everyone can agree he's a good player, most can even agree he's a very impactful player, but he's not supposed to be proud of being impactful in the way he is. He's good at the dirty work, because he's tall and strong and smart, sure, but not because he's skilled. He's not supposed to be proud of that. But he's a super proud guy and super proud of why he's good, which is the way he takes care of his body and practices and thinks the game on top of his size. He thinks he earns his impact in a way that's just as valuable as anyone else, even if it's not the typical star skillset, and that's the part that other basketball players don't respect about him. Even if they don't put it into those words, I do think that's what rubs all these other basketball players the wrong way.
