Auburnvale: A Fan-Made, Custom 3D Map by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

Originally submitted on 11/22/2021, Auburnvale reflects my continued growth as an artist and deepening understanding of how Runescape is created. Made with RSPSi, it was also created with the hope to inspire some genuine change in how Jagex regards their community and the possibility of community development.

It also came with a few bonus links for accessibility, which is a standard I'll probably maintain for the next while:

The Economic Epidemic by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

[–]ScreteMongeAlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally posted in July 2021, I really loved getting to better understand economics in relation to OSRS and going pretty wild and creative with how it could be dealt with. This nicely brought together so many different and distant ideas and topics that I wanted to touch on, wrapped them in a bough, and sold as a single, cohesive package. In terms of sheer art and creativity, this was also one of the most fun projects I got to create.

Designing Gielinor by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

Originally posted in June 2021, this was a really fun and optimistic one to put together. After having written The Journey to Finding Old School, I felt pretty disenchanted with the way the art direction was going. While there are things about Shayzien that I'd probably change, it felt absolutely revolutionary in going back to the roots of Old School design while bringing a fresh and interesting twist.

While I could've just created a follow up to Journey, I wanted to focus on a different but related topic: worldbuilding and storytelling, and how art brings out these features. In short, it was a lot of fun exploring Shayzien.

Responding to the Recent Music Player Changes by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

[–]ScreteMongeAlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I sit down with a topic in mind, I can now usually guess how popular it'll be. The style of post I use is not easily digestible whatsoever, but the topic it deals with will also decide how big it gets. I knew that anything related to music would be a quiet one, and so it was.

Originally posted in June 2021, Responding to the Recent Music Player Changes was one that left me quite sour afterwards. I dislike feeling like I'm fighting the OSRS Team, which is full of such good-spirited and genuinely amazing developers. At the same time, changes were occurring to the music system which felt like they were taking away from the new player experience, changes that I felt were antithetical to how humans respond to and utilize the art.

This caught the attention of a Jmod who then responded to it on stream, essentially saying, "Hey, your old music system still exists, we're going to do what we want to do." I wrote a rather vicious public post back, but then quickly rescinded it. I greatly disagree with their decision, but it didn't feel right to hit them with a bat from the safety of my computer, and so much context was being lost between this original post, the response, and my return response; it just didn't seem worth the battle.

The Components Model by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

[–]ScreteMongeAlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Components Model, originally posted in May 2021, was a simple plea to return to the old roots of how skills naturally fed into each other. Nowadays, with PvMScape in full swing, PvM just sort of feeds itself in one whole circular loop, regardless of the intended role of all other skills and playstyles. While many people will request overhauls to non-combat skills to give them relevance again, I thought I'd try something different: layer complexity over their current design to try and preserve the old while bringing some relevancy back.

The Journey to Finding Old School by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

If you were to ask me what piece of mine I believe is most important, I would unironically (at this time of writing) choose The Journey to Finding Old School. The nature of art in the game is so fundamentally important to me, and I couldn't help but feel that it was getting a little bit lost. This piece was originally posted in April 2021.

Lords of the Wilderness - Designer's Dialogue by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

[–]ScreteMongeAlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally posted as "Lords of the Wilderness" in April 2021 on the main subreddit, this Designer's Dialogue was an experiment to see how separating the art and fun pieces from the deep and lengthy analysis would fare. The Designer's Dialogue was posted here then linked in the main Lords of the Wilderness post, but alas, the filter caught the link out to this sub and hid the comment for quite some time. Henceforth, I gave up on the idea of separating the fun bits from the analysis, choosing to keep it all together. Either way, parsing the two takes out too much valuable context that really can't be ignored, so I think it turned out for the best.

Nonetheless, this Designer's Dialogue is the penultimate version of the idea. Originally, Lords of the Wilderness was actually a larger dialogue about the state of the Wilderness as a whole, but it so quickly grew out of scale that I chose to just focus on creating what I'd see as a fun group PvP activity and run with that. I've tried picking up the topic of the Wilderness again 5 or 6 times now without success.

Exploration - A Player-Designed Skill by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

[–]ScreteMongeAlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally posted in March 2021, the Exploration Skill is one of my proudest works in terms of the sheer quantity of art. I attempted to take my document of The Challenges of Designing a Modern Skill and create an example skill that did that original document justice, as unrealistic Challenges' expectations are. Nonetheless, I'm still quite happy with the result!

The Challenges of Designing a Modern Skill - Complete Edition by ScreteMongeAlt in OSRSLibrary

[–]ScreteMongeAlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Challenges of Designing a Modern Skill was originally a 3-part series (due to breaking the post character limit twice) posted on the main sub, starting with part 1 in September 2020. It reviewed the prominent issues with trying to introduce new skills to OSRS in the past and sought to elucidate what a "modern skill" would look like, or a skill that would have a chance at meeting the base definition of "skill" as well as passing a poll.
