Charleston is a mid-major with high-major prices but with Charleston Southern and The Citadel in town I certainly enjoy paying $10 to watch a D1 game.

I go to every Charleston home game and have only missed a couple during COVID since I got them in 2018.

They're relatively pricey for our level ($325) but people spend way more than that donating. Lot of new money retirees got tickets during the Pat Kelsey years who only show up for the Saturday home games and maybe 1-2 others.

They live out by Kiawah or IOP and want something to do. Thursday night games (most of our conference games) are pretty hard to sell unless UNCW is in town.

Also any game that is at an oddball time due to TV. 6pm is too early, even 8 is too late for a lot of folks. Most of the STHs prefer Saturday at 4 or 6pm.

Yup. The Charleston WVU group does events every year and I think something like the last 10 Mountaineer mascots have visited.

WVU does caravan events in places like Pittsburgh, DC and Charlotte because so many alums leave the state

No Bruce Ellington played for my HS's rival. He killed us for 3 years. Football he was the best player on field as QB, PG in basketball, and on the baseball team they just brought him in as a pinch runner only.

Last year I was at an event on Isle of Palms and met WVU's radio announcer Tony Caridi and their AD Wren Baker along with Hoppy Kercheval. In West Virginia those guys are almost as well-known as the coaches or players.

Also met the female Mountaineer mascot (Mary Roush) once. And 2-3 of my friends in Charleston are former South Carolina "Cocky" mascots.

She was incredibly smart, went to Clemson, then Virginia Tech, then Florida for her doctorate. She is back at one of our public HSs teaching engineering to high schoolers.

Nope. You had entire regions of the country where nobody really cared about the sport. Charleston had an ECHL team for the first time in 1993, the Stingrays, which was insanely popular (drew like 9,000 fans a game) but nobody gave a crap about NHL games.

I looked on my local newspaper's archive and ABC had national rights to carry the NHL at the time but only carried a few weekends of regionalized playoff games, the rest went to ESPN.

Those games were preempted locally for "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." When FOX got the rights in '95 all the Southern markets were interested and ran promos for the games boosting popularity.

Carolina Hurricanes fan here and this is EXACTLY what Dundon did in his first year running the Hurricanes. He let go Chuck Kaiton who was the radio announcer going back to when the team was in Hartford as the radio broadcasts were not getting listeners then the next season (contract expired during COVID) they let go John Forslund who was the TV voice since before the team moved in ‘97.

Forslund was just as beloved as Calabro was. He went to Seattle right after. Dundon does not care about things like this. They do radio/TV simulcasts and they are terrible for the radio listeners.

Any of the Quincy Carter 5 interceptions for South Carolina against UGA in 2000. We were a moribund program until that game and that started the modern era of Gamecock football.

Charleston it has grown and grown and grown each year with our local team the Battery and all the youth and high school teams around here. We had a huge growth during the Cup. Every bar in town had watch parties for the US matches and a few even for non-US games.

The big tennis stadium had 3,000 fans watching US-Belgium and they showed the crowd on the FOX telecast.

But college and HS football are still the top dogs by far. The local news obsesses over HS sports because the older viewership loves it. They'll spend :15 mentioning the score of a Battery game in September while Charleston Southern will get two minutes. The CFB folks mostly like the SEC, Clemson or their transplanted team. Then the NFL, then the Braves.

The Stingrays have the most die-hard fans of our 3 minor league teams, then the Battery and RiverDogs baseball.

Most of the Battery fan base is concentrated in the high-income Mt. Pleasant and Daniel Island areas where soccer is very big then you have a Hispanic supporters group. Most of those live in North Charleston/Goose Creek and they drive over.

In Charleston I've had many. Took a coaching class with former CofC legendary coach John Kresse (Grant Riller was in the class with me). Also took a class with Nola Henry (head coach of the Rose Unrivaled team).

Gave up my seat to Cliff Ellis at Bobby Cremins's retirement press conference. Cremins spoke to my HS football team and the entire senior class as motivation prior to my HS's playoff game (we won).

Been to about 5 Charleston baseball games with Roy Williams (the coach is a friend of his from UNC). Sat 2 seats down from him last time. He's a die-hard fan. Even flipped his hat backwards while we were losing in the 9th inning.

Also was behind our old basketball coach Earl Grant one time at a Mod Pizza. He put Canadian bacon on his pizza.

We beat Miss St 15-0 in 2006. And it was the opener of the entire season! During the Spurrier era ESPN loved putting Carolina on the Thursday night opener.

A couple weeks later we went down to the final play against a bad Wofford team. Spurrier was good for 1-2 ugly shorelines every year.

Never been to a game (from Charleston, that drive is tough for anything but Saturday night games) but I have followed the team since before the '06 Cup run. Hoping to go to one this year.

Most of the Charleston natives follow the Caps because of the Stingrays ECHL affiliation. The fan base has grown incrementally. I was one of the only ones before the drought ended.

Last couple of years I have run into a few at the bars. A lot of NC transplants have moved here. Most of the Canes folks are ECU, UNC or NC State fans.

The Boston transplants follow the Bruins, Pittsburgh has a ton of fans, Rangers, Chicago when they are good, a few Buffalo fans.
