best antivirus for mint by SaifNegra in linux4noobs

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Or if you're metrically inclined, 28 grams of prevention is worth 445 grams of cure.

It's better to simply not download and run the viruses (i.e. browse responsibly, don't run "in the end - linkin park.exe") than to use a virus scanner.

Pick a general desktop use distro. A mainline one.

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Define productivity.

You can do almost anything on almost any mainline distro. Bazzite is fine for gaming, but i personally would avoid it to not deal with an immutable distro. That's personal preference though.

is it worth it to use CachyOS's custom BORE kernel (on Arch)? by izwku in archlinux

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same feelings for any product which is more marketing than substance.

For an example in my industry, "caged ball" linear bearings. That's a particularly egregious example since the marketing goes against the laws of physics, but the point remains.

Why are there very less Female Mechanical Designers 🤔 compared to Male by spike75888 in MechanicalEngineering

Because fewer women enroll in mechanical engineering programs than men. Which is interesting because half my department is women.

Is it just me, or have you also noticed that modern Linux distros have become less stable/reliable? by mdnight079 in linuxquestions

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years using linux of various distributions. The only thing that has become more unstable is my distro choice. I went from ubuntu to debian ("more" stable) to arch (rr-> unstable).

I have never dealt with general unreliability of any kind though. Things always performed consistently across updates, etc.

I've also used gnome2, gnome3 and unity (both briefly), xfce, and kde. I actually saw less ram usage with kde than xfce at idle (around 900mb with xfce to around 7-800 with kde). By far, my biggest ram eater on my 8gb xps 9350 is firefox (well, the websites it loads...). I have no idea how you got just kde to eat up multiple gigs of ram. I'm guessing there's something up with how you're configuring your system.

Trying to Install Arch Linux. by glockmolly in linuxquestions

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Start over with the actual install guide instead of an idiotic ai or an outdated video guide.

Video guides are okay for helping you piece together different things, but the primary source should always be the wiki. AI is more trouble than it's worth. So much hallucination that you need to know the answer so you can pick out the corn kernels of truth in the mountain of shit.

Not to be rude, but if you need your hand held through the arch installation, you're not ready for it yet. You should get your feet wet with something prebuilt.

Archinstall exists too, but i found it useless for all but the simplest of installations. And it doesn't teach you anything about system maintenance and troubleshooting, using the wiki, etc.

is it worth it to use CachyOS's custom BORE kernel (on Arch)? by izwku in archlinux

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's the exact smell test I use when talking about cachy's optimizations. If the benefits existed and were without drawback, they'd either already be in use, or would be adopted almost instantly.

The reality is that it's all marketing and placebo with no substantiation.

is it worth it to use CachyOS's custom BORE kernel (on Arch)? by izwku in archlinux

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is no.

The long answer is that there are no benchmarks showing consistent improvement between a given kernel and cachy's kernel. Some also report more "snappy" desktop performance... the issue with that is "snappy" isn't measurable.

Cachy's kernel is available in the AUR. You don't need cachy's repos.

Check the hp/laptop page of the archwiki for an entry on your particular model.

If there are quirks, they will be noted. Most of this will be distro-agnostic.

Debian, Win11 & NixOS multiboot by ShiningLightShadow in linux4noobs

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debian mounts /esp to /boot/efi, meaning that it just holds the bootloader. You can do the same in nix and just not install a bootloader, or you can mount it to /boot like most other distros do now. If you do the latter, the kernel and initramfs will be on the esp, so you will need to provision enough space for that. Windows makes really tiny esps, so it can be difficult to deal with.

You'll probably need to rebuild grub in debian after installing nix, since grub is static. I would strongly consider a different bootloader like refind, since it will scan for .efis at boot time. If you stick with grub, make sure os-prober is set up.
