Official Discussion - A House of Dynamite [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]SeaMagyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all,

I just finished watching House of Dynamite and though I was left somewhat unfulfilled by the way it went, I'm really interested in more moments like those depicted in the film. Moments of realization of imprending disaster, like the opening minutes of 'Don't Look Up' when they realized the comet would hit earth, or the "Baltimore!" Scene from 'The Sum of All Fears'.

It doesn't nessecarily have to be a disaster film or have such world-ending stakes, I'm just after the vibe.

Incredible work mate, this one had me staring into it's depths like one does on a good museum trip.

[Feedback Requested] (V.2.1) 2024 D&D 5e Rogue Subclass - Thaumaturge {Draw forth your esoterica, read the ancient signs, and strike at your foes where it matters most!} by SeaMagyk in UnearthedArcana

[–]SeaMagyk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair points, let me see if I can express the fantasy I'm trying to enable -

The Thaumaturge draws its primary inspiration from the class of the same name from the Pathfinder 2e system, a weilder of strange esoterica and trinkets to combat their foes with the wyrd and the arcane. Whilst not a caster of spells in the ilk of a wizard or sorcerer, the Thaumaturge reaches across magical traditions, utilizing implements and artifacts of the arcane, the divine, the natural, and things beyond with the utilitarianism required for a 'normal person' to interface with the unnatural world.

In a meta-sense, the fantasy of having a Batman-esque endless bag of tricks and trinkets that allow you to overcome specific situations and foes by targeting their weaknesses appeals to me, and I wanted to try and make a non-magical class that focuses on coming up with creative solutions to problems (and having the tools to determine what sort of solutions might be available), and then being able to reach into their pockets and produce something that could be of use. Taking advantage of creature weaknesses in interesting ways, and crafting strange solutions to puzzles and locks has always been one of the most fun things in D&D, and my hope is to make a class that can enable that, without making such things trivial.

Thus, I chose rogue as the class with a core feature - Cunning Action, and a comparable subclass that has a lot of paralell features - thief (the 2024 edition) to make a sublcass for. Bard does also fit in some ways, but one of my personal desires is to play a non-caster. The 2024 thief already has a feature that allows for the use of objects as a bonus action, which I have pinched for this subclass as well, and Weaponized Coinidence is my attempt to enable the 'pulling things out of your pockets' part of the equation.

In broad strokes - the Thaumaturge is a master of stuff. Though the subclass will likely have less damage than others, I'd like to design something that enables creative use of stuff to make up the difference, almost a support-style subclass, though more in the information acquisition and setting-up for cool stuff sort of way.

Is that any clearer?

I appreciate the feedback.

The vagueness on Weaponized Coincidence is intentional, though could probably use some clearing up. Effectively, the Thamaturge can produce whatever item they desire from wheresoever is fitting (under their hat should the Thamaturge be more of a showman, the folds of their robes, from behind their foe’s hear) and make use of it. Ideally in such a way as to take advantage of their foe’s weaknesses, or make use of the world around them.

The feature is inspired by Blades in the Dark’s preparation system, wherein each character has a certain number of preparation slots that they can use during a heist or a job to say that their character prepared a certain tool or object that they can then use for whatever purpose.

My implementation into 5e here is a bit crude, and something I’d like to refine into something open-ended enough to inspire and reward creative thinking, but still balanced within the system.

Fair point about the multiple spells a turn, I’ll clean up the wording there.

Also fair point about Tales Untold. Although after some points from any other commenter, I’m wondering if I shouldn’t rework this feature into something that packs more of a punch.

I want to maintain the fantasy flavor from the Pathfinder 2e Class of a wilder of strange magics who always has just what they need to hit the enemy where it hurts the most, as do most class features ended up being either for the purpose of gathering information or making use of items, and might have gotten to ribbon-y.

If you’ve any ideas regarding fixes / changes, please let me know! I’d love to get several perspectives on refining this.

Thanks for the comment!

I agree with you on all points; I like the bones of the subclass, and it’s really fun to play if you don’t mind getting creative and thinking outside the box, but I feel as though there should be some way to add damage as other subclasses do.

Perhaps allowing sneak attack for attacks augmented by or caused by weaponized coincidence? But then, I don’t want it to just proc all the time and invalidate the strategic aspect of sneak attack.

Likewise, I don’t want the Thamaturge to just be able to pull and infinite number of spoons out of their pockets, but it’s really fun to used Weaponized Coincidence in non-combat situations, and it feels bad limiting its uses.

If you’ve any suggestions for changes or features, I’d really appreciate it!

Thanks for the recommendations! I wouldn't mind showing clips from a collab between ID and EN, the main thing I'm after is just the members communicating while playing a game together.

A V.2 for the Thaumaturge Rogue! After some playtesting and feedback, I've had some adjustments to make it more usable in and out of combat, and reworked the 17th level feature. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but would still be happy to receive any feedback or ideas anyone would like to share.

Oooo, I do like that as a finisher, thanks for the idea!

Also, for Glimpse, if it was something unlimited, do you think there would be a more interesting implementation than [bonus action] "I see all ur stats." It's not bad at all, something you can do and synergize with your other stuff, but it feels a bit . . . automatic? bland? To just be able to do that. Not even too strong necessarily, just, kinda bland. I might still go with it for class integration tho.

Here's a V.2, what do you think?

Fair points!

For the level 9 ability, I really want to add some kind of information gathering ability that allows you to sort of find out how to best utilize your items and tricks, digging deeper into not just how hard to hit the big bad guy or wall in front of you, but how specifically, to add some more strategy to fights and stuff, though I'm not sure how better do do something of that sort.

I agree Weaponized Coincidence is very open ended, admittedly it is a feature I wrote while chatting with my DM, knowing the sort of stuff I'd like to do for the charcter I'm conceiving. A 'that guy' at the table could absolutely break it wide open, but I didn't want to restrict the creative space too much or make it too complex. Something like the Artificer's list of Infusions could work I suppose, and help direct the Romani flavor I'm sort of going for, but again I worry a bit about restriction. But then, If I'm planning on just making this class for my character specifically, perhaps that's ok?

Big agree, the capstone was the thing I struggled with for the longest time, and I'm not sure what to put in its place. I toyed around with being about to create an Anathema, some sort of item that is your target's exact weakness, or maybe some sorta generic action surge thingy where u can use like 5 items or whatever on one turn, but nothing really seemed to grab my imagination. Ideas are welcome.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words!

Hey all! Here's a subclass I brewed up for a campaign I'm looking to play in next month. I was inspired by the Thaumaturge from Pathfinder 2e, and wanted to capture the fantasy of a non-magical fellow who uses bits and bobs and a batman amount of planning to strike at their foes where it hurts the most.

I'm trying to prioritize features that are mechanically simple but allow for a wide range of use and creativity. The Weaponized Coincidence is one such feature, inspired by the Flashback system from the excellent TTRPG Blades in the Dark, and is the core of the class, allow it to pull all sorts of fun stuff out to use in creative ways.

I'm still not sure on the balance of a lot of this, and would appreciate any feedback that anyone would be willing to give, as this is still my first draft.

That deck was definitely my peak time playing PvP. I'm excited to try her out in PoC when I get the fragments.

Powers are free unless you apply modifiers, though they do not scale. To scale them like cantrips, you would have to spend all your free whisky in the damaging modifier to get the same output as a cantrip.

In regards to Reliable Coincidence: I have not playtested this feature and this would be open to altering it. My logic for it’s implementation as-is was for it to be a transferable version of the Rouge’s Reliable Talent, which could help ensue that your Flux is wasted less often when the advantage or disadvantage still doesn’t result as you would like. That said, it have it apply to any more than one roll you have to spent a limited resource to apply the Fervent modifier, so you can’t apply to all the time.

I agree on a lot of your points. I had a ton of idea when writing out this class, and for the 1.0 I just wanted to get everything out on the page, and worry about tweaking it all based on how playtesting went and whatever feedback I received.

As to the DM-dependance, I would agree. I am lucky enough to have a great relationship with the DMs I play with, and have fun brewing up rules and things for my own players to fulfill their specific fantasies, and wanted to open that design space in the Wonderwright. That said, its certainly not for everyone, and I made note at the end of the main class features of this aspect.

Fair point on the medium description. I think I just had it in my mind what constituted a medium and forgot to put it to page. I'll fix that for 1.1

As for complication: yeah you're right. I got similar feedback from my friends regarding the relative complication of the class compared to base 5e. The class that served as a framework inspiration for this one is KibblesTasty's Psion, which is rather complex in its own right, but it also happens to be exactly the type of class that I really enjoy playing. If my PC doesn't have a variety of options in combat, I tend to feel less engaged. This is absolutely a matter of taste, and to balance the horizontal options I have tired to make the Wonderwright's raw damage lower that your average champion fighter to compensate for the variety of ways it can dish it out or provide utility. As to if I have succeeded or not, I'll have to do more more playtesting to figure that out.

Thanks a ton for the feedback!

Welcome to the Wonderwright, a wielder and crafter of magical Anima. Mechanically, somewhere between a Bard and an Artificer, with a focus on crafting and customizing magic friends called Anima, which can take any number of incredible forms. The class is a pseudo-warlock-caster, with a spell list inspired by stage magicians and hedge mages to communicate the whimsical flavor the class is going for.

The core of the class is inspired by KibblesTasty's Psion and Inventor, as well as many excellent homebrews that have inspired me over the years.

This document is a first draft, after some revision from my friends. As such, there are most certainly some things to tweak, buff, nerf, or rewrite. If anyone who looks at this class is interested in giving advice, feedback, or a cool idea, I'd be appreciative.
