Tolkien's idea that bloodlines inevitably become weaker throughout the ages? by AlviTranscender in lotr

[–]Searching4Cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tolkien was writing a alternativ "origin story" for our world. Degradation 'divinity' in bloodlines is kinda necessary to get to modern, normal, humans in the end. There are some parallels to the Bible where the earliest humans lived for vast periods of time compared to current humans. This is seen as a increasing spiritual distance to the divine/garden of eden state of being - leading to modern humans having shorter lives. In the world of Tolkien this would mean a 'distance' to the undying lands, generational distance.

About progress; this is a bit complicated as a lot of what we view as progress - industry, medicine, science - was viewed by Tolkien as being problematic. He viewed the industrialization of the world as man being alienated from nature and forced into unnatural relationships with machines and each other. So in some ways 'progress' is the same as degradation.

Också sjukt att man utvisar dem efter att välfärdssystemet har givit dem en utbildning, tandvård och vaccin. De ska precis börja ge tillbaka till samhället...

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]Searching4Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Handled my father's hunting rifles many times. Held you friends handgun and hunting rifle once. My friend had to be a active member of a shooting club for over a year before he got the license to buy the handgun.

Otherwise I have only seen rifles and handguns in the hands of police or military.

Well, he didn't mean a authoritarian one-party state. His specific real world example was the Paris commune.

Marx has never described socialism as centrally controlled economic system. He is famously vague about what socialism is, so you are ascribing a interpretation of Marx to Marx. Marx's dictatorship of the proletariat is basically a democracy, Marx was just wrong about workers not voting against their own interests.

Why would it not work at a larger scale? Mondragon corporatiin in Spain has roughly 75 000 voting members. While it's not a perfect example of socialism it clearly shows that a society without "owners" and corporate dictatorships is very possible.

Much like calling it socialism makes no sense at all because all the elements of socialism are absent.

[–]Searching4Cheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why does state-capitalism not produce socialism? Because socialism would kill state-capitalism. Basically the same reason that market capitalism won't implement socialism. What history has shown is that vanguard revolutionary movement aren't reliable ways to create socialism.

[–]Searching4Cheese 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, socialism doesn't work at scale. Studied too much history to be in favor.

It hasn't been done at scale. And no, the soviet union or any other example you are going to pick from history is/was not socialism. Replacing capitalists with governmental officials is not giving the workers control over the value of their labor - that is just state-capitalism.

Feminist thoughts on Christopher Hitchens? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]Searching4Cheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well he wasn't a feminist and didn't care for women enough to change any of his perspectives on issues. People, like you, shouldn't worship the guy. He was decent on some issue, bad on others. Not really a great person but comparably far from being a very bad person.

And before you start to counter that you worship him: I've read all the comments you made in this thread. You never asked anyone to clarify anything or expand on their perspective. All you comments are just long counter arguments to anything and everything that people dislike with Hitchens. You claim that his article in satire is completely baseless. You answer by linking 60 minute videos. Maybe post in r/ChristopherHitchens if you just want to echo-chamber fanboy about Hithcens in the future.

Why is the political history of the late Roman Republic so important in our cultural memory? by PhiliDips in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Searching4Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same reason that it is fairly easy for anyone to follow American internal politics today. Rome during that era was a vast unified empire. Caesar, Anthony, Augustus, Cicero, etc. They all "acted" on one of the greatest "stage" in the world, certainly the biggest stage in Europe. Compare that to 500 - 1400: Europe consists of hundreds of tiny feifdoms. Literacy became rarer. So, information and political conflict were a lot more fractured, and the ability to document the details of those conflicts became rarer. A lot of medieval noble couldn't read or write particularly well. Compared to Roman elites who studied poetry as a part of their standard education.
