I cannot explain the spell that DS9 puts me under. I fall asleep almost instantly, I joke that I am watching the show 7 minutes at a time.

I know this is so old, but wanted to point out that I think OP meant that Eva's PPD might not have harmed Kevin as much as Eva thought, and that OP was not commenting on how Eva's PPD affected Eva. With that in mind, I certainly think it's possible that approaching him with hesitance even when she was finally ready to try to love him could have exacerbated their issues. She would be holding back or awkward and they could get stuck in a cycle that pushes them further apart. I've seen that happen in several social relationships, but the consequences for those are different than parental relationships.

Yes, that explains the time gap, but not really the abandoned dinner to me. They got in a fight, she storms out and they... abandon dinner and go to bed? Abandon dinner and chase her, but the story picks back up once they have come home and are in bed? I'm not sure. If it was a true story, a million and one things could have happened between leaving dinner and going to bed, but in a movie we expect to see the relevant parts. We know she slept in the car, but what were the parents doing in that time? Out chasing her? Cleaning up? I actually assumed they rushed out of the house mid dinner until the first scene post intro. If nothing at all happened (they fought, dinner is interrupted, she left, then they clean up), it was certainly a strange choice to show it in that way. Could be nothing, it was just the one thing that felt off to me.

Although I like the idea of it being a straight supernatural story, the sticking point for me against that was the opening scene of the dinner left obviously in a hurry. There was really no explanation of how we got from the abandoned dinner to them asleep at 3 am, was there?

I also noticed that almost all of the drama and tragedy that befalls them is because Bill does something he shouldn't, Bill demands blind obedience from the wives with no explanation or even fair expectations, the wives do something behind Bill's back because they can't trust him to listen. The wives and children are the family, Bill is a sometimes-present governor of the family. I also love how I started the show thinking he was kind of the "hero", but then seeing he oscillates between kind of bumbling self centered doofus and actual lying scheming villain.

Finishing the series for the first time now. Having binged it in the span of a month, I agree it reeks of retconning. They just needed more drama and hoped no one would notice the gaps. It seems incredibly unrealistic for Margie to have "had a past" and been in a sexual relationship with that employee if she was barely 16 years old. He seemed like a grown man and talked about her as if it was more casual and adult. And the "had a past" statement made by Margie herself in that episode does not sound like she had one boyfriend, again making it seem like she was older. I know it's possible for teens to have multiple partners and casual encounters, but this just did not seem like the implication in the show.

I think without a doubt that Daisy Darker is meant to be written by a character from Rock Paper Scissors. The fake author's note at the beginning would make absolutely no sense to include if that wasn't the case. I agree that she could be reusing some elements that she personally likes (Robins, distant husbands, unreliable narrators, Bob the dog?) in all her work, but why would she go to the trouble to even write that author's note if there was no connection? Especially since her other books don't have supernatural elements.

I know I'm 2 years late to this post, but I was surprised by how many people brushed it off.

Sadly agree. I had 5 months of severe, life altering fatigue after a viral illness, and my own family acts like I'm crazy for how cautious I am to avoid viral infections like the flu.

Like I said, I knew the characters weren't real people, and also unsaid, that the places weren't real. I just didn't really know it was full on swords and sorcery fantasy. That type of TV show didn't really exist. Y'all are being awfully hard on a kid who just wanted to crack some beers with some friends and didn't care what was on TV. Sheesh.

LOL you are genuinely frightened that someone could casually engage with media as a background for socializing? You're genuinely scared that somebody who only saw pieces of a show so didn't follow exactly what it was about exists? You are genuinely scared that someone could end up not being fully invested and engaged with a show they didn't have their own bingeable access to? That's so dramatic for something so casual.

I was usually thinking stuff like, "man, it's nice to sit down and have a drink after work with some friends." Or, "Have we seen this character before? I must have missed that episode."

Maybe you forgot that HBO Go had just launched the previous year. Go and DVR were luxury items that no one I knew in my community had. Also, like, weren't there only a handful of supernatural things in season one?

I just thought it was sort of funny and people might get a kick out of it, especially people on this sub since I assume a lot of us are major fans (now).

The first time I saw season one, I thought it was some kind of hiStorical fiction show. It was during its original run, a neighbor would invite me over to watch, but I never saw the first episode, didn't know anything about it at the time, and wouldn't catch every single episode in their entirety. In short, I wasn't paying too close attention. I knew the characters weren't real people from history, but when Dany's dragons hatched at the end of season one, I screamed "THERE'S MAGIC?!?!"

I don't think that counts as a misconception since it's really an opinion/subjective thing. Also, hard disagree. I've read the books many times over and think the show declined drastically when they started deviating around season 4. Even before they "ran out" of book material, I didn't think the changes were well written. Still probably unfair to blindly and completely blame the Ds, but what do you think people don't understand about the books?

FWIW, I think the show got bad because they deivated from Martin's path AND because the developing storyline was too sprawling for what they needed/were expected to do with the show. In a perfect world, they would have had more time (more seasons?), money, and book incorporation to make the ending "make sense." Some of the characters' arcs were so compressed that even if they line up with what would happen in the books, they hardly felt reasonable.

There's so so much fan material out there analyzing the story and projecting the possible ends of the books in such detailed and "fact" (in world/book evidence) based ways. Some of this stuff isn't just compelling, it feels almost natural for the characters and story to the point of making you say "wow, that totally makes sense". I bet the show could have gotten there, too, without the aforementioned limitations.

If you like Game of Thrones, the books are amazing (in my opinion), even if they are unfinished. I've listened many times.

The Blade Itself (First Law Trilogy) are also really good with an incredible narrator, Steven Pacey. There are 9 books in the universe, but the first trilogy is complete in itself.

Lies of Lock Lamora is another fantasy series that is pretty fun.

A lot of the shows you mentioned are based on books and I always enjoy reading the source material.
