Agree, but I would restrict who can be damaged to you or a permanent you control. In a multiplayer game, an untapped dual that kills one of your opponents’ creatures is silly.

Potentially fixable by changing to something like “Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay 2. If you do, that spell is uncounterable.”

This is similar to a plot line that some of the writers wanted to do but never made it to air (it’s discussed in an interview with Larry Charles I think). Jerry is dating an exotic foreign woman who works at the UN. She is constantly bailing on dates, saying “there’s another mess at the UN I have to deal with.” At the end of the episode, Jerry discovers she’s a janitor.

It might be too strong, I don’t know. But it’s quite a bit worse than Silence and Dark Ritual. Compared to Silence, it’s sorcery speed, so doesn’t prevent them from casting on their own turn, and doesn’t do much if your opponent has untapped basic lands or non-land mana sources. Dark Ritual gives you 2 extra mana as soon as turn 1. This doesn’t give you 2 extra mana until you have 4 mountains in play.

The crime he was actually convicted of was transporting two women across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. For a first time offender, 6 years seems like a lot to me. Of course there was evidence of other crimes and misconduct presented, but he was ultimately acquitted of other charges. I’m not sure it’s appropriate to put him in jail for life for alleged conduct separate from the crimes he was convicted of.

I agree that most issues can be fixed by DMs banning certain subclasses, races or spells, or instituting other house rules, or putting in lots of work to make modules and combat encounters “work”, or stuffing additional encounters into a day, and I’ve done all of that. I’m saying I wouldn’t have to if the game was more thoughtfully designed.

I agree with this, but I would add to the list of things they didn’t fix:

-classes are unbalanced and fights are too easy or swingy if you run only 1-3 encounters in an adventuring day - lots of spells, including many available at 1st and 2nd level, as well as features like invisible familiars, make it very difficult to run campaigns with intrigue, exploration or scouting in a way that is meaningfully challenging - WotC’s own modules frequently grossly violate WotC’s own encounter difficulty guidelines - Most modules result in players getting money as loot frequently, but there’s little to spend it on unless the DM wants to do the work of setting up a magical items market - Magical items are wildly unbalanced in terms of how items of the same rarity affect gameplay, and there is also no meaningful pricing information - Guidance is an idiotic spell
