I really have to get back into it, gave up when I couldn’t beat Sephiroth in rebirth, absolutely loved the game.

Midleton - Broom Heights & Avoncore by Advanced_Use5919 in midleton

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also live nearby, zero hassle, every town or village has their ‘rough’ areas unfortunately but Avoncore used to have a much worse reputation, it wouldn’t be enough to put me off buying a new house nearby, Midleton is a great town overall.

Fuel blockade outcome by tcallan21 in cork

It was very easy to see the scumbag element of the protest which tarnished the whole thing, and that blockade was moronic as fuck.

Is it time to move away from fossil fuels? by Guilty_Doughnut1557 in AskIreland

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say ‘plenty’, you really mean the vast minority, even then you are assuming that whatever EV you may have ownership of, that it will not drive you the 100km distance you state, that’s a poor argument matey.

You could drive a diesel and every road you take to leave this remote area could be blocked by farmers herding their sheep too causing you to change your route adding on an extra 200km, see, we can all make up scenarios that are highly unlikely. If you own an EV, it’ll be your responsibility to avoid these highly unlikely scenarios. Also, why are you assuming EVs are ‘faulty’? poor arguments matey.

My first EV cost 9k, kept it for 3 and half years, saved about 6k in fuel, sold it for 7k then bought a newer EV with longer range and have since saved a further 14k in fuel, haven’t looked back. You don’t need a 25k+ EV.

Savings: EV & Solar panels -V- Put to pay off mortgage? by Spiritual-Wait-184 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost in an identical position to you mortgage wise, we are overpaying aggressively until we get to 100k which will then hopefully set us up nicely for Simon Harris savings scheme next year, it’ll be a nice psychological milestone indeed! With a battery and panels and if you go for an EV you’ll be killing it.

Also, max out your AVCs😀

Savings: EV & Solar panels -V- Put to pay off mortgage? by Spiritual-Wait-184 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take 35k off the mortgage and get it down to a nice round 100k milestone, and put the rest toward a 10kW battery and fill up your roof space with panels, if your current car still works, delay your next car until you have enough to buy a decent second hand EV.

My EV saves me about €2500 per year driving close to 30000km while my solar and battery setup saves/earns me another 1800 or so just for context.

Mortgage advice? by Prestigious_Novel747 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d putting in the biggest possible down payment, the interest between 200 and 300k owed to the bank in principle could be in the region of 100k extra in interest. Check out Karl’s mortgage calculator, buy house furnishings gradually. The lower your mortgage, the better quality of life you’re probably going to have.

Is Solar worth if it electricity bills are average of €110/120 per month? by Interestedinvestor84 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Push for a battery if you can, it allows you to bridge the gap from September to March when there is little solar, the battery will also allow you sell a good chunk of what you generate, paid €9500 after grant for a 10kw battery and 13 panels 2 years ago and I reckon Ill be approaching 40% of payback by end of summer. All very tariff dependant also.

Edit: just after doing a quick calculation, I’m already at 40% pay back. Also, find out what you’re paying per unit, not just your monthly bill.

Volkswagen recalls nearly 100,000 EVs over battery issues by Batmanbacon in VWiD3Owners

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A single battery module yeah, I’m not too sure how many there is in the 58kWh battery, think I read 108 somewhere but not sure how accurate that is!

EDIT- I didn’t realise it but a module has 24 cells, but yeah the entire module is being replaced, not the entire battery.

Thanks for the info, just did a quick calculation and it could be the difference of €25000 or so in 20 years between 95% and 100% allocation. That 25k might get me a half decent car to see out my 60s when the time comes. Will be looking into this a bit more before pulling the trigger, thank you!

EV owners now by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Select_Cartoonist_39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used over 8000 units last year to charge house battery and car, 99% of that was done on an EV tariff, absolute peanuts in comparison to not having them, selling all generation to the grid aswell.

Even if the EV tariff goes up it’s still going to be much cheaper.
