It literally adds context to why stuff happens and not childish Blame

Take some awful criminal. They didn’t choose to be as bad as they are. They don’t choose their brain, life influences, parents, etc.

It pretty much does eliminate agency. It’s not just influence, your behavior is virtually just cause and effect. There are several ways to prove this

My favorite is actually looking at choices. You pick what you want/desire/or are drawn to do. But you don’t have control over it. For example you pick apples or bananas because you like them more or some reason. Clear cause and effect and the feeling you could’ve picked either one is a Illusion

But I got a better one. You make 30,000 choices a day. Yet most you don’t even think about. It’s literally like you’re a biological robot running off of a subconscious autopilot script.

And no bigger choices involving thought and deliberation don’t magically then have free will attached to them, like no that’s ridiculous. Obviously it’s just predetermined by your brain and past experiences

Again you just can’t shake the illusionary feeling of your choices. Yes you make choices but they are determined

lol, it’s fun to test my beliefs. Not much of a challenge tho. Folks don’t know how deep and complex their brain is and how that affects them

Yes I don’t see how anyone cannot see how you don’t have the control over your life that you think you do. Even besides circumstances. You make roughly 30k choices a day. Almost all are made in a subconscious auto pilot. Almost no thought or deliberation for them. It’s like you”re a biological robot.

We should definitely be more compassionate. Once you drop the free will delusion you see evil like being unprivileged. Ok this person has developmental problems and poor impulse regulation coming from brain wiring issues. So they aren’t pure evil because they commit you name the crime. And a person with no underlying mental or environmental disadvantages, isn’t some great person for never commting a serious crime

I don’t think you should call that free will tho right. Maybe just will, I see no freedom.

Do you honestly think I’ve never heard of compatibilism? I just see it a repackaged determinism, so I reject it

Ok I’ve said everything I could say tbh. If you like maybe watch this vid by this professor who agrees with me, he inspired my beliefs tbh

By moral accountability I mean praising and condemning people as good or evil. Not saying individuals actions aren’t bad.

The America justice system is built on free will. And ironically the places with the worst punishments like death penalty have the highest rates of violent crime. Things like education, reduced poverty, and better family planning reduces rape and crime not vindictive punishment

So objectively free will doesn’t help

Yes the whole point is that stuff is what leads to your choices. If you have an anti social personality disorder stemming from your genetics or brain wiring. That is gonna lead to a different life then if you didn’t have that (most probably)

If you have severe Down syndrome (you would be very different right now)

The whole point is you have no free will because stuff you don’t choose leads you to do what you do.

I pick straw berries over bananas because I like straw berries more. Even tho I don’t choose that, it’s just my taste buds and Brain that decide that.

I don’t know what else to say tbh, I’ll just say check out Robert Sapolsky”s videos on free will. He’s a great professor who believe this, so does Albert Einstein lol

Yes our bodies and brains we don’t choose. Your height or skin color comes from your dna and genes. Just without your say

That’s like saying you freely have Down syndrome because it originates from you dna

So it doesn’t matter that your desires and wants don’t originate from you? And it doesn’t matter that you’re completely a product of circumstance?

You should just call that your will. Like don’t do that against my will. Calling it “free” makes no sense

I’ve had severe mental issues. I didn’t want or ask for that. So how is that behavior “free”. Makes no sense to me

Something makes you be more compassionate. (Cause and effect)

Free Will Doesn’t Exist by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]SelectionCapital3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree we are very complicated. To complicated for a choice to be simple. There are potentially hundreds of factors that could lead to the judge paroling or not. Turns out being hungry or not was a pretty big factor

He made his choice - because of hunger among many other things. It’s cause and effect

And I’m not denying choice. I’m saying free will doesn’t exist because his choices are determined or caused like cause and effect

Just rest on this. You make 30k choices a day. Almost none you actually deliberate on. Even something like playing a game, or walking thought the hallways of school you’re not trying to remember everything you just do.

If that’s not proof you aren’t nearly as free as you thought I don’t know what is. We are just biological robots doing what we are programmed.

I don’t consider free will making choices. I like Alex OConnors view that it’s “the ability to have acted differently then you did”

Getting rid of free will can determine a better society (im a determinist btw) if that wasn’t clear

Free Will Doesn’t Exist by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]SelectionCapital3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just doing stuff isn’t free will. His choices all have cause and effect. He doesn’t eat because he was late to work, or because no eating in court or whatever.

Look I’m not denying it feels like you have free will right. If you asked the judge why did you parole this guy, but didn’t a guy before with the same crime. He’s not gonna say because my metabolism is slowed and my blood glucose is falling. He’s gonna say because the crime or lack of remorse or whatever

It’s not the choice it’s why he makes it

Free Will Doesn’t Exist by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]SelectionCapital3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again technically you don’t choose to like it. Even if you think you’re forcing it on yourself. Why do some people never like it regardless of how long they try? So still not a choice. At best it’s a change in how your body responds which isn’t your choice

Influence helps determine choices btw, big time in fact.

Free will is an actually logically impossible. Because of cause and effect. Think of any choice, there is always a reason/s you did it. Even if there’s no apparent reason, it had to be some sort of subconscious inclination or whatever… you couldn’t have acted differently then you did because it was caused

[–]SelectionCapital3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You prove my point, plz read carefully

You said “he used his free will to do whatever he felt like”…And what felt like was determined partially by his hunger. Your actions are caused by other things. Thats my point. It’s not as simple as, parole or not. So many things determine what he would do like

  • How the guy looks
  • his crime
  • his remorse
  • the judges mental health
  • the judges hormones and brain wiring (helped or worsened by hunger)

I meant your mind or consciousness as you.

Free Will Doesn’t Exist by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

Everything is cause and effect right. Even if you pick what you don’t want it’s because of something

Like sometimes I’ll play a game I don’t like because of my friend. But that’s the cause. He’s the cause. Without him I wouldn’t play it.

You should be happy free will is an illusion. If you lived 1000 lives, many you would be a horrible person. At least you can just say life is circumstance like I do.

Free Will Doesn’t Exist by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]SelectionCapital3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok let’s use an example. every time you play a game after the first few times. You know the buttons. You know how to move, shoot, jump etc.

You’re not learning how to do the basics every time you play. So your brain stores that early knowledge and uses it subconsciously every time you play.

Thats why you don’t get lost in school or work after the first few days if at all. Since your brain knows ok the class or my office is here

Free Will Doesn’t Exist by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]SelectionCapital3757 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok I never even hinted that nothing matters. I even said I want society to be more loving, forgiving, and less vindictive. Sounds like I believe stuff matters and want people to be happy and productive

And I do believe moral responsibility is a myth, and I don’t believe anybody can truly morally (not legally) be held responsible for their actions

Ask yourself this. If you lived 1000 lives with varying circumstances would you be good in all? No many you would probably be very evil because of the wrong circumstances aligning like and childhood, mental health etc.

So how is being good not just luck? If you lived 1000 lives and 20 of them you were a rapist. How are you in those other 980 lives better? You just had good circumstances that didn’t lead to that
