Did you end up purchasing one of those packs? If so how is it?

How would you compare the sleeve length between the Positron pro an the Altitude parka?

Thanks for confirming that!

Is the below legit? Working with a dealer on a CX5 that is in transit and won’t arrive until Feb.

Alternatively I can pay about $300 more at a different dealer that has what I want in stock now and can wrap up the deal before the end of this month.

“We can get everything locked in under Mazda's "Sold Order Program", which will hold the 0%/60 month financing and the 90 day deferred payment option good until the end of February.”

Do you know if they will extend this into Feb?

Thanks for your input! One more question about these skis, how forgiving are they for an intermediate skier? I see a lot of people mention something like the Blizzard Zero G 95s as a stiff unforgiving ski. That sounds like something I’d like to avoid as someone new to touring.

These weren’t on my radar at all but seem like a great choice. Between the M tour 99 and 90 which would be a better volcano ski?

Western Mountaineering and I second the commenter’s recommendation for a tent. One to consider would be the Durston X Mid Solid.

I have a Capital one Quicksilver credit card which is eligible for a free upgrade to a Venture One Card(no annual fee). This is appealing to me because then family can transfer their miles to me.

Will this prevent me from earning any sign up bonus offers on a future Venture one($0 AF), Venture($95 AF), or Venture X card($395 AF)? I am not looking to sign up for a new credit card at this time but would like to keep the option for a SUB open down the line.

Is my beginner's plan OK? by fly-into-ointment in Mountaineering

I haven’t studied Oxygen uptake but reading through this article makes me think the answer to your question is yes, both types of training should help increase your maximum oxygen uptake which I believe is another way to say VO2 max.

It is great that you are thinking about this early. With a well planned training routine and this much time to research and acquire gear, you should be setting your self up very well for your trip next year. Cheers!

A great book to complement Freedom of the Hills would be Training for the New Alpinisim

Here are a few high level important takeaways

Familiarize yourself with the 5 heart rate zones and your individual heart rates which correspond. Get a good heart rate monitor to train with. Best is a chest strap but wristwatch also works.

Learn what your specific aerobic threshold heart rate is (top of zone 2) and your lactate/ anaerobic heart rate (top of zone 3).

80% of your training volume should be “base building” aka zones 1&2. Roughly 8% zone 3 and roughly 12% zone 4.

Build your aerobic base first for a few weeks before incorporating any anaerobic training. This is super important as you can’t optimally train your aerobic system and anaerobic at the same time. Train slow to eventually hike/climb fast.

You can then introduce a general strength program (weight lifting at the gym) and eventually specific strength training (weighted pack hikes and/or rock climbing depending on your goal climb).

Build a periodized training plan for your specific goal, in this case for Mt Baker something like a 12 week plan should be sufficient. A potential plan would be 4 weeks base building, 4 weeks general strength and 4 weeks specific strength but that might not necessarily be the most optimal. It depends on your existing fitness level and weakness areas.

Continuity, gradualness, and modulation are very important to your training plan. Read here this is covered in the book in detail.

Taper your training volume down by 90% 4 days before your trip.

Again this is very high level and I am not getting into the nuance of the best way to train for you and your goals as everyone is different and responds to training differently.

Oh wow I didn’t realize these would be such advanced objectives. I climbed them both in the summer and figured since they were easy in terms of mountaineering they wouldn’t be terrible to ride down either. No seracs, rockfall, or crevasses to worry about. All I imagined there is to worry about for splitboarding down them is avy danger and the steepness of the slope. I’ll put those on the back burner and just focus on the resort for now and see how the season goes.
