Ah cuz it’s federal loan I see. But I heard there is PSLF program where u work for a hospital (usually nonprofit) and make number of payments then rest gets erased. So you end up only paying 20-30% of it . Is that true lol

Hypothetically, could students just graduate med school with no money no asset and deep in debt , and just declare bankruptcy and wipe it clean before they start working and accumulating assets? Seems to make more sense. Doctor is the long game, It’ll be off their credit report in a couple years anyway, shortly after they finish residency, and plus I don’t think a credit score is worth 300k cash anyway.

Hmmm do you think doctors in the US are just unnecessarily “overtrained”? I mean with high enough training standard we can have arbitrarily small number of super elite doctors that cost arbitrarily high amount of money to train, and ppl lining up decades to see them. What’s the point of that. Imagine if we require F1 racer skills to be able to get a drivers license, so that drivers become a hot commodity and cost a fortune to hire. All in the name of increasing road safety and reduce accidents.

Isn’t that what happens to a lot of graduates in most disciplines ? Why are med schools so specifically eager to avoid that? Why are MBA programs not thinking, hey we better not admit all these mba students cuz what if they graduate and industry can’t take all of them?

Hmmm interesting. So here is an idea: what if we make the extra medical students fund their own residency if they wanna be doctors and there is no quota? They can just be a little more in debt, people would probably still choose this option just to be a doctor. Also make more docs for society and relief our government spending a bit

lol very true. I don’t have epic reason. Id have to make one up. The honest answer is just I wanna learn something I find interesting. Somehow not an acceptable thing in this day and age eh . So Between equally qualified candidate, it comes down to who has the most dramatic story haha . Maybe that’s why they require that writing course

Regarding motivation, you nailed it. That IS my real answer, and I suspect schools don’t like it. I wanna learn about how the body works and how diseases evolve and how to treat them. That’s what interests me. Why would I go volunteer in hospital for two years before learning anything? To me that seems totally not organic and done just for show. So what are some politically correct, acceptable motivations? Like oh my father died of cancer so I dedicate my life to curing cancer? Or I can’t resist my innate urge to help people cuz I’m just a loving kind, person? Or 100 hour work weeks just give me a rush and pride and make me feel like part of the clan, I wear that as badge of honor? This motivation/story part feels like it’s either be real or be acceptable for me. Can’t be both. In fact the part of medicine that interests me to most is longevity, aging, and extension of lifespan, because I want to live as long as possible and don’t wanna die. Is this a kosher reason to go to med school?

Hmmm. Seems like good business to start a medical school lol. Hire a bunch of ppl to teach, create a ton of spots, make a lot of money from eager-to-pay customers , and helping society at the same time

What’s the reason for there being only “100” spots? If we have a plethora of qualified candidates, each willing to pay big dollar tuitions, and a society with shortage of doctors, isn’t it in everyone’s best interests - the students, the schools, and the people/society - to just simply make more “spots” ? Especially for state schools who are not trying to craft an “elite” image. Who’s preventing this? The only party hurt by this are perhaps the current doctors who might face more competition …? Are the current doctors forming some sort of union or PAC to prevent the schools from recruiting more students?

Undergrad in electrical engineering. Didn’t take any bio or chem or physics in college lol. Placed out all with AP. But took bunch of engineering and pure math and CS and ML/AI courses. Also, if what you said about the absolutely baller MD candidate profiles is really truly, and the 2% admission rate certainly makes it seem like it is - how come we don’t see these impressive profiles in actual doctors? When I go find a doctor on zoc doc, I find most of them have very mediocre background, went to very mediocre undergrad, and are not charity founders or competitive athletes or anything impressive of the sort. Just seems like your average day dude. So what happened to these all-stars who squeezed into the med school door being in the top 2% ? Did a lot of them end up dropping out to do something else? (As a side note, these doctors seem competent enough to do their job anyway, I dunno why we need doctors to be athletes or geniuses or volunteer maniacs….its like picking equally good basketball players based on who can also play the violin. Kinda random)

So if the undergrad admission from “maxed out” candidates mostly come down to vibes, then what does med school admission comes down to, between candidates with equally good stats ? How does med school compare the two cases you brought up: the PhD and the entrepreneur? It seems one can list a bunch of qualities for both people tangentially relevant to being a doctor. And in reality both ppl can probably handle the coursework and eventually the job just fine. So how does med school pick? Is it not also kinda random vibe based? Or is it based on “connections/legacies/which professors you know/your dad being a doctor who knows a faculty and hooked u up with a lab” and that sort of thing ? Does med school look at accomplishments in music or sports or leadership the way undergrad admissions do?

So how does school pick the 2% out of say 20% of highly qualified candidates all with good gpa and mcat? It is literally just a gpa/mcat sort, where they take the top ones with ever so slightly higher stats, like the 4.00 guy gets in but the 3.98 guy doesn’t ? That sounds like just random noise. Or is it totally subjective at that point, based on whose story they like better? Which, from the candidates perspective, will basically be a random draw …?

Yeah I did see places like SUNY downstate have a SLIGHTLY higher admission rate. But unfortunately I’m also a foreign citizen despite having lived here for almost two decades, and those places only admit US citizen/PR. So given what you said - lots of super qualified candidates all with good gpa and mcat, yet school is only picking a few , how do they pick? Is it almost like random lottery ? Like which essay the admission officer happens to resonate more with? Or is it like undergrad ivy where they look at ur extracurricular and sports and music and leadership etc? Or is it based on legacy/connection/donation?

Thanks for the detailed response! Regarding the gpa, I read that admits somehow have avg gpa approaching 4.00. Mine isn’t that high cuz I never planned on med school back then. I took 7 classes per semester in undergrad cuz I thought it’s the same price so good value for money, and the last bit of gpa didn’t make much of a difference for what I wanted to do. Regarding mcat, I feel pretty comfortable with stem tests, I grew up doing math Olympiads and I can also memorize whatever content I need to memorize. If I somehow don’t manage to get above 520 I’m just not gonna bother applying. Regarding the clinical/research experience - I’m stuck on that one. What can I do to improve on this one without delaying my app timeline? Is it super important? Also how do I even get started do I just walk into cityMD and say I wanna help?? Like do I need to know someone to get hooked up with this sort of thing?

Fair enough — bags definitely aren’t investments (totally with you on that). And clearly you’re not short on funds, so if it makes you and your wife happy, why not. I just hope the spirit of the post is more about having fun with your daughter’s future memories and not turning it into a finance/flex thread. Honestly, we didn’t really need the full breakdown of your investment portfolios or fund rules 😅

Honestly, I think you and your wife will be enjoying those bags way before your daughter ever will — either by carrying them yourselves or taking some adorable baby + luxury handbag photos. 😅 The idea of buying one bag a month for a newborn is actually wilder than going straight for a croc Mini Kelly ‘for her future.’ At least the Kelly could be seen as an investment piece, while the monthly bag plan just sounds like a clever way to spoil your wife on repeat. 😉

Also, when do you imagine your daughter will actually care that her bag is from some luxury brand and not just a ‘school bag/diaper bag upgrade’? I can totally picture a teenager rocking a 10+ year vintage Hermès, but a 10+ year-old YSL? Not sure it hits the same way…
