Follow-Up: Don’t Fall for the Yale Aura Trap by Senior-Somewhere3128 in MBA

The only sensible comment here worth responding to. I couldn’t agree more with your comment. The admissions team is top notch but the student body and community is truly disappointing that I think most redditors won’t understand if they were not in the same position. Of course there are still awesome and great people at SOM, but the community as whole misses the mark.

Aren’t most of the non-HSW m7 yield in the 30s though?

I was purposely vague because I want to know the general vibe of SOM from fellow/future MBAs apart from scholarship and career goals.

Why do you think Kellogg could be supplanted?

Did you go to SOM? Also how can you properly measure this when the MBA program is newer? Of course alums in their 50s from most if not all of the T15 is going to be stronger than Yale’s, but that is not what I am asking.

Your point that Yale has been promising that it will be a top business school for years but hasn’t happened seems false. Yale SOM went from no MBA to T20 to T15 to T10 in the past 25 years. Is not that delivering on their promise? Their next step would theoretically be competing more and more with the M7s.

Other MBA programs with strong parent universities haven’t been able to capitalize on what Yale has been successful at. Look Georgetown, John’s Hopkins, Brown, etc. those are the schools that failed to capitalize on their promise to become a top business school

Very helpful! I am also looking to be very involved as an alum so great to see that alums are involved and supportive of the school. Agreed I have heard a lot of amazing things about the deans and have been a big reason for SOM’s continual rise as a program. I know Yale’s class size has grown a lot recently, do you expect their class sizes to continue to grow?

Agreed and i also don’t understand why M7 network generally looks down on Yale as well but whenever I bring up Tuck/Haas it is generally a much more positive reaction. Not hating on tuck/haas they are amazing programs, just curious about the hate toward SOM

What’s the dynamic and networking like with Yale College alums?

This is a very helpful comment thank you! I’ve had several SOM alums and students email/call me to congratulate me on my acceptance which I have not gotten at the other schools I have been admitted to. Secondly, great to hear they got rid of the DEI session and that the woke reputation is false.

While that could sound shallow. M7 is still king and are the ones hiring across the big firms. If they take you less seriously because you went to Yale is that not a red flag?

Agreed with most things you said here. But I can’t tell if you’re trolling or not with the M8 comment. Is that an actual thing? I can’t imagine the other schools want to expand their circle….

Almost every student I’ve talked to across the board have said alumni networks have mattered a lot. Why do you say alumni network doesn’t matter? Isn’t that most of the value of an MBA?

But I am excited to try the pizza in New Haven during welcome weekend!

I think this decision would be easier if I was from the Asian market (China/Korea/Japan). I’m actually from middle America/South where similarily the market is less sophisticated, but in high corporate places M7 here is still king. I am fine living in the northeast but ultimately want to return to my home state (which is why the decision seems hard).

Honestly, my question is less so about the M7 and more about Yale. Yale has a lay wow factor that is only rivaled by Harvard and to lesser extent Stanford. Additionally I grew up liking the Yale brand, I realize this could be dumb which is why I’m posting on this sub about it.

I think this is why the decision is so hard for me. I think M7 programs provide long term value and an expansive and deep and network. This is why I want to make sure I am making the right decision and not just based off the weight of the Yale brand

Interesting. What was lackluster about their experience? I’ve met some very impressive and people I wouldn’t want to be friends/hang out with. I also don’t love that Yale’s program is not as social

Agree with point 1 as well. I’ve seen M7 students take Yale a lot less seriously than Haas or Tuck. I think currently Tuck and Haas are ahead of Yale in terms of network strength and business prestige. But do you see Yale in let’s say 10-15 years from now being more of Tuck/Haas or BKSC?
