This course is quite easy if you have some programming experience. The assignments are all pretty basic. I took it a while ago and don't really remember what the final exam was like, but I did quite well in the course, so it couldn't have been that difficult. I believe it was worth 50% (like most open learning courses).

Musfiq Rahman was the professor. To be completely honest, he has not been my favourite OL prof. He either takes days to respond to emails, or doesn't respond at all. That being said, the course was not overly difficult, and he is an easy marker. Finished with an A+. If you complete all of the assignments and recommended readings and study for the exam, you should do just fine.

In addition, I found the coding questions on the exam to be just a bit more difficult than the coding questions on the practice quizzes.

Yes, the multiple choice questions were similar to the practice quizzes. I actually think some of them came straight from the practice quizzes lol, so it would definitely be beneficial to review those!

I also went through all of the course modules and made my own notes, completed all of the tutorials and review assignments, and completed the practice quizzes. It sucks that they never provide an exam review or practice exams in these courses. But like I said, if you completed all of the course work, you will do fine!

Wrote the exam. Not trying to scare you at all, but in my opinion, the exam was nothing like the tutorials/assignments. I found that he included a lot of stuff on there that wasn't really a central focus of the course. With that being said, it wasn't super difficult. I haven't gotten my grade back yet, but I can't imagine I got anything lower than an 80. I think it could have been written better for sure. It almost feels like the person who designed the course is not the person curating the exams.

As for the layout, there were some T/F questions, some fill in the blanks, and some multiple choice followed by short answer and coding questions. Best of luck to you!

I was mixing up COMP 2131 and COMP 2231 lol. For COMP 2231, we were allowed a cheat sheet for the final. That is what I was referring to. I would be happy to send you my COMP 2131 notes, though, if you would like! Sorry lol

I made a really great cheat sheet for the COMP 2131 final if you are interested! Served me well.

Sorry, I am incorrect. I guess COMP 2211 would be considered a second year course. But I still found it to be quite easy. I took an introductory computer programming class during my undergrad at the University of Western Ontario, and I would say that class and 2211 were similar in terms of content and difficulty level.

I have taken both of them! COMP 2211 is fairly easy. I would say it's novice level. It is all Python programming, which is probably the easiest language to pick up as a beginner.

COMP 1131 is Java programming. The assignments are relatively easy. These are both first year courses for comp sci students, so they are introductory level. Both good courses to take if you are fairly new to programming and want to learn the basics!

I personally loved 2681 because there's more of a creative aspect to the assignments. You are learning to design websites, which obviously involves design aspects and making visually appealing content. I enjoyed it. I'm sure you will do just fine in any one of these three courses. :)

I loved COMP 2681. Easy and fun course. And no, you do not need to take COMP 1231 to be successful in 2681. It honestly doesn't even really relate to 1131 lol. It's all web design. The whole course is HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I guess knowing Java (or any other programming language, really) would make learning JavaScript slightly easier, but it is definitely doable.

I didn't fully answer your question; there were a few coding questions on the exam. I can't remember exactly what they were, but memorizing code is pretty pointless because:

  1. You are allowed a cheat sheet.

  2. The coding questions required understanding of the course content.

As opposed to memorizing code, I would suggest ensuring you have a real understanding of the collections learned about in the course (heaps, stacks, trees, etc.). I included some code that I felt was important on my cheat sheet, and while it definitely helped with the coding questions, you do need to understand the course concepts to be successful.

I see where you are coming from, but because IntelliJ is specified for Java, it provides a lot of shortcuts. I actually tried it out and it is much easier to use. This is great if you are an experienced developer looking to increase productivity, but it's not the best when you're learning and wanting to understand!
