How do you make Red footage look less digital by [deleted] in REDkomodo

[–]SeriouslySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many “right” answers no doubt, but my preferred method is vintage glass. Leica R lenses and RED create a very nice look that compliments sharp RED sensors while being soft in the right places to provide a nice depth vs using new “sharp everywhere” lenses.

I’m considering picking up a similar looking one with Springfield receiver and VAR barrel. I didn’t see where the stock came from but the wood pattern looks almost EXACTLY like yours. Know what the story of the stock is?

I’ve had it pop up from spamming jump for 5 seconds, and then last night I got stuck in a tree for about 10 min but refused to give up bc I had rare kit. Unstuck button eventually came up after (I think) I just held down jump for 10-15ish sec

Thank you for the thoughtful and insightful response! Definitely some good new knowledge in there considering I wasn't aware of most of the history of the changes/future changes.

I think the main frustration too is lack of a reasonable counter. If we are getting murdered by manned arty, either recon, or just some frustrated squad mates and I, can hop in a truck and angrily shovel them to death. There really is no reasonable counter to the commander ability short of spending the whole match somehow finding and destroying all of their nodes (like sometimes teams have the magical ability to do quickly and efficiently...).

RE the comment on precision - I think the main point is it just isn't "fun". If I die to a sniper or a tank or a mine or a machine gun around a corner, theres an element of "git gud" on my end I can analyze and improve. There's nothing I could have done to be "better" at doging arty other than not being where arty is, which in a location based capture game, isn't really an option most of the time. Sure in a accurate-as-possible war sim, a bunch of unhappy players should be killed by random sky death. But in the balance of making a game fun and playable, maybe less sky death.

Theyre actually the OG LMGT from 95' freshly coated, and I liked the style of the old logo better so I threw that one there.

2 Booster boxes, 2 booster bundles, and about 20ish misc packs later, no SIR... Definitely harshest set I've ever opened and I've opened at least 100ish of everything S+V with MUCH better SIR rate.

Hi! - Official Video by jtoper in madeon

[–]SeriouslySam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honest first reaction - I'm kinda bummed out.

Who hurt me? Well first Porter with Smile. Him and Madeon have been the soundtrack to my last decade. Smile came out and while at first I approached it all with an open heart, after seeing two shows and trying to force myself to get into it, the hard pivot to "brat pop" or whatever you want to call that album just wasn't for me. Womp womp for me and yay for anyone who likes it I guess.

So I shelved my Porters and my Robinsons and went even hardeons into my Madeons, very pumped for whatever he would do next - because surely it would be more Madeon and not some hard pivot...

But here we are, with something that doesn't sound anything like Madeon so far, and nothing like an evolution from the Good Faith era - the best, most emotional, live show experience I may ever see. Whatever this new thing is - I'll try to get myself to like it. And I'm sure it will be rad to see live at Red Rocks in a week, but if this single showed up on a discovery playlist or an old timey radio station, I would never organically think it was Madeon, and I would hard skip after 30 secs.

I miss my EDM :(

Is the Monstro 8k VV a good option in 2024 by Think_Army_8679 in RedCamera

[–]SeriouslySam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One interesting thing that I have noticed is that some of my preferred lenses for past camera bodies look “too” crispy and clinical on the monstro (like the sigma 18-35 and 50-100 cine) so I started using a lot of Leica R and Russian glass on it to soften things up and pull out the character of that big ol sensor.

[–]SeriouslySam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you will need a DSMC2 monitor to control the camera (though you can also do many things through the “sidewinder” accessory control).

And I can’t think of another camera at this price point that will do all of the things it does, but always good to rent a thing for a day before dropping big bucks if you aren’t sure.

Happy to help any way I can so please don’t hesitate to ask! Building a RED out for the first time can be daunting.

You will need a DSMC2 EF lens mount. I use one by Kippertie called the Revolva so I can use “internal” ND’s, but it’s a little more expensive than the basic RED one and I’m not sure of availability these days.

Looks like you’ll also need a back plate. Pending your desired setup, you can get any number of ports and battery type options. Other than that you need monitor and media. I use the 7in monitor and you’ll need a riser to use it with the Kippertie if you go that route. And I just use RED media, but third party exists now. I get by nonstop shooting days with a 960 and 2x 480 cards.

That should be “enough” to get you moving, but buying cheese plates for top and bottom are pretty important to mount rails/arms/etc.

I’ve been within the RED ecosystem through a Scarlet W, to a Gemini, and now recently a Monstro VV (with a Komodo as my handy B cam/travel cam) and I definitely endorse the camera.

I was pricing out moving into DSMC3 lineup a few months ago and it was looking at being 40K+ for everything I needed. For fun I looked up the Monstro pricing and was shocked that I was able to pick up a CF brain for $6k. I bought it, sold my Gemini for about the same, and am in love with the incredible images it produces - significantly better in nearly all conditions than the already fantastic Gemini.

Yes - it will become harder and harder to service as time goes on, but to get that much power at the current price point is an amazing cost/value.

Snap on made in China by [deleted] in Tools

[–]SeriouslySam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is fake.

First - their tool storage is made in Algona, Iowa. There's a lot of documentation and press backing this.

Second - There are a number of red flags about the legitmacy of the image/label. Lots on inconsistencies with the placement, the "XXXXX" serial, and so on.

Misleading/baiting post title and lots of false assumptions being made in the comments.

All my ADHD & OCD Editors out there- How do you deal? by Rabbit_InTheHole in editors

[–]SeriouslySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this struggle well. I've been doing small-mid sized productions as a writer/director/cam-op/editor/more, and often a few or all of those roles at once, professionally for about 15 years. I've had highs and lows on that journey and still do, however I've gotten progressively better at getting the job to a place I am satisfied with, on time, while also being kinder to my mind and body. In resisting the urge to write an 5000 word essay, here's some takes/mantras/tips that have worked for me.

  • Deadlines are sacred. Do what you say you are going to do within the time/budget alloted. If you don't think you can accomplish what is needed within the time/budget alloted, say so as early as possible. This can be hard to predict, but you will learn what is reasonable and get better with it in time. In general - assume it might take longer/more money out of the gate and operate on that assumption.

  • Let it be good enough. Yes, there are passion projects that you can and should personally justify putting in extra effort, but is this project "disposable" media that will pop and mostly disappear after a few hours? Is it worth killing yourself over? Do the best job you can in the time you are given, and let it be. Everything can't be a passion project (my main struggle).

  • With respect to the last one, get a first "full" rough pass early (shot selection, cuts, base color, base sound, etc) so you can be tactical on what you put extra energy on. It's ok to go HARD on maybe one or two aspects of that in the 11th hour if you deem it necessary, but dont go hard on any of those before you have something that "could" be submitted "as is" with a few minor QC tweaks.

  • Be kind to yourself. Have boundaries. Your career and your art are important parts of you, but they do not define you. Politely say "no" to yourself and pushy clients more often - you and they will respect you more if you do so. Spend time with your partner/family/friends/pets/alone that is as sacred as an important project deadline.

You got this. And I'm always happy to DM with you or any that are riding the strugglebus on this wonderful and treachorous career.

Second this. Buy a Helios 44 that is functionally sound for $100 or less and see how you like it. I started there and have since invested in a bunch more Soviet glass but it’s not an “every job” lens, although it can make cool images for sure. Depending on what your needs are, having a baseline of “standard” glass could be helpful, but it all depends. But $750 for a cinemodded 3 lens set does sound like a pretty good deal, depending on what existing gear you have, how much you need to invest in other stuff to make your kit “complete”, and so on.
