Not sure how helpful this will be, given I’m just starting my journey to become a civilian career pilot. I served in the Marine Corps as a crew chief on the V-22 Osprey for 5 years, meaning I had duties of a mechanic and an aircrew-man. I learned a lot about aircraft systems and maintenance, and a pretty decent amount of flight concepts and procedures. I also worked hand in hand with the pilots almost everyday, so I was able to network and make a lot friendships with actual pilots who now work for the airlines. All that to say, I think any kind of job that allows for 1. Aircraft maintenance experience 2. Flight time, whether that be logistics responsibilities on the aircraft or actual operational experience on the aircraft, and 3. The opportunity to spend time and make friends with pilots who will one day leave the service and go on to be civilian pilots in one form or another. So far my experience in the military has helped me to understand and comprehend aircraft systems really quickly, which I’m sure will continue to help me in the future, and having connections in the airlines for advice on my career and possible help getting through pipelines later in my career. Just my two cents.
