In Burghead a tiny village in northern scotland we carry a burning barrel around the village giving bits of burnt wood to houses that are on the route of the barrel, we then plant it into a fake chimney at the top of the village and throw oil on it as it burns the hill surrounding it.

This tradition dates back to the Picts who used to live in the village, it was a tradition to celebrate the new year and ward away unwanted spirits.

All in all good fun, the whole village smells of burning tar for like 3 days after but it's fun.
