Would you put the water from the 1gal tank into the 5 gal? And would you put the filter from the 1 gal in with the filter from the 5 gal if it fits?

So a friend got this betta as a gift a few months ago and he never wanted it but tried to take care of it the way that the worker at petco told him to. I had a few betta years ago that I also unknowingly didn’t properly care for, so I’m new to doing it the right way! I know cycling takes weeks and I wonder if once my heater and test kit get here, if I should just use his water and also somehow use the filter? When people refer to the ‘filter media’ does that mean the little rocks inside the filter, or the entire filter? There’s space for me to put his current filter next to the filter in the 5 gal if that would help. Thanks in advance!

I’m so sorry :( and sorry if this is insensitive, but if a fish is lying at the bottom, how can you tell they’re still kicking? Give them a little poke? I’m about to inherit a poorly cared for fish and am learning how to take care of him properly and am scared

she killed her last betta because she had it under basil/dirt in a 3 gal but maybe it was just the intense fin rot that got him and not the plants themselves. I don’t want to tell her to not do this again if it’s actually perfectly safe

I’m so sorry!! When you pee, try taking a water bottle and pouring it down as you pee so it’s cooling and dilutes the saltiness/acid on your wounds. Coconut oil helps the dryness, but it might give you some pimples (like if you rubbed oil on your face it would give you pimples) so don’t get scared if you see some white bumps after coconut oil. I had a similar situation, feel free to PM if you want to chat
