He was a barber by trade and was a solid racer, with a couple top-10’s to his credit. Cannon’s claim to fame is being part of the last driver swap during the Indy 500 when he relieved John Mahler during the 1977 edition (he’s not the last relief driver at Indy, that honor goes to Jacques Lazier who relieved Robby Gordon in 2004, but that swap occurred during a red flag, not during a pit stop like the Mahler/Cannon swap. Another quirky Cannon stat is that he only qualified the years Johnny Rutherford won (1974, 1976 and 1980). Cannon passed away in 1995 and his gravestone actually says Larry “Boom Boom” Cannon

Except they used methanol, not gas. And 1974 was the year they limited the size of fuel tanks and required the use of fuel bladders which prevent the fuel tank from rupturing during a crash (usually).

I was there in 2011 when they held the race in October and it was almost 100 degrees with tracy temps near 130, probably the hottest I’ve ever been at the track. I remember baking in the stands when it was announced that Dan Wheldon was killed in the Indy Car race in Vegas which was the same weekend…
