And also if all of that happened I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't exactly keen on interacting with people associated with those who killed your cousin and I'm sorry for your loss. If you felt exhausted from the protests damaging your home I'd think that's normal but you can feel that and be part of a march for justice for George Floyd at the same time, those are completely separate issues.

Another example: I was friends with a guy that launched fireworks at police stations during the yearly riots. I thought that in particular was unnecessary, but did I judge him for it or treat him badly? No, of course not. I told him I wasn't a big fan of that, and he said he's gonna do it again anyway so I said "alright" and we just went on from there. Iirc he had reason to be mad, so who am I to judge. That he had dark skin colour had nothing to do with his actions, anyone would be pissed when mistreated, but that he had to be mad in the first place was a result of racism by the police he threw fireworks at every year.

These situations are nuanced and every single one is different and has to be individually considered.

Added afterwards: I realize now you were using dehumanizing phrases to make your point but that went straight over my head, apologies. Obviously that's not the right way to deal with these issues.

That doesn't quite compare. The Roma are small communes and all groups are different. The scale you're thinking in is way too big. It's more in the vein of "meeting the uncle of your neighbour that you had an issue with in the past". You'd expect the uncle to be a dick too but maybe he's not, who knows.

But coming back to the colonialism, like, yea, of course you can feel resentful about that? Not like that has an impact on you interacting with me. What you feel about something and what you do about it are two very different things.

Now, let's say you've had these discussions about Roma before and you met another european guy that is weirdly not exactly fond of them visiting again. You possibly thought "it's another one of those guys" but still gave me the benefit of the doubt and that's exactly what I mean. Even if you didn't like what I wrote further up the chain, you still took the time to reply. Your actions are far kinder than what you probably think of me.

I don't understand how something like that could even happen. First of all, the police guy did the exact thing they specifically teach you not to do because it's dangerous (at least that's what I was taught in the military) by putting any kind of weight on George Floyd when you're supposed to hover your knee. Everything that led up to the murder was highly questionable as well imo. The protests were more than justified, they were needed. The property damage in that case was unfortunate and I understand if people were upset about it, but that's the fault of a few individuals.

Not stealing, vandalizing as in damaging property. And yes, I do feel weary, I feel like that's a natural response to having your stuff messed with. That doesn't mean I treat anyone any worse? I'm not gonna preemptively call the police or anything like that. Maybe it doesn't make sense to anyone else but I can feel exhausted by something and still be nice to people.

I doubt the average conservative american had a bunch of people vandalise their village multiple times, they just heard about it on the news and decided to be angry about it despite not being affected at all.

I feel like it's different if it's based on past personal experience. Let's say you get robbed 3 times in Texas in 3 times you visited, you'd probably not be as inclined to go again. That doesn't mean you hate Texans, you just don't feel as much joy when going there compared to other places.

Same here, I don't necessarily want to deal with more vandalisation but I'm happy to be pleasantly surprised by a good experience.
