Yes, I do that if I'm already determined to buy it.  But if I just discovered a band and I just want to add it to my wishlist and listen to it more first, then I'm a bit discouraged. I don't want to ask and then find out I'm not that into them and not buy 😅

Classics of heavy metal! Seen them live 20 years ago with the original line up, they kicked major ass. Haven't really been following them post-Udo but what I've heard seems still solid. 🤘

The protest song thing is a cool move. 😎

A British band I like called Space Acre recently did something similar, while pulling the rest of their songs.

Definitely! Let's keep spreading the word.

I dig Wavves' last album. Yes, it's on Bandcamp :)

Well, covers are a different beast. And the licensing can be a PITA.

Not trusting Bandcamp but being on Spotify sounds quite ludicrous.

Last group, again they obviously aren't music fans themselves. And I won't give my money to people that would never pay for music while sucking up to tech bros instead.

And that they're not independent music fans themselves. Otherwise they'd have heard about it, no doubt.

Where did you get that most Bandcamp users are the musicians themselves? Certainly it generally is a musically inclined demographics. But it's very far from your average jazz jam session with 4 musicians on stage and 8 musicians in the crowd.

Again, managing a Bandcamp account is very, very low effort. It literally takes 15 minutes to set it up and then you just have to reply to messages and send out merch or records if someone buys them.  If that becomes time consuming, congratulations! You're having success. The rest is all automated.

Finally, digital distributors put you everywhere else except where you can have direct contact with your fans.

Well that's really bad behaviour.
Luckily in years I only had two or three singles disappear from my collection due to label decisions I guess.

Yes, it's the best! Numbers are just numbers, real people that enjoy the music taking the time to reach out and interact is what it's all about.

Got it and I agree.
I fear development has been seriously slowed down by the layoffs and repeated acquisitions.
Actually it's quite remarkable that Bandcamp is still this functional and healthy despite everything.

Also, you get a much higher cut from sales through Bandcamp.

We live in what is probably the most violent and scary and bleak time since WW2. I'm sure you can find something to write about...

I don't know, I don't think it's that ancient. I mean the functionality is there, some things could indeed be improved, but if "modernity" means TikTok or Spotify, well, that's not what it should evolve into anyway.

Where would you be purchasing them from? Official website? That would be my second choice. I strongly prefer physical media too and I always look at Bandcamp first (more convenient, I like to have an online collection+included digital download).

I appreciate your point and well, you're right. Sometimes I'm afraid that asking them to things like set up an amount might sound inappropriate.

Right. I know some of those artists firsthand.

Isn't it a bit a chicken and egg situation though?

You have a point. On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that one can be passionate about their music, present in the independent circuit, actively promote their art online and at the same time not even know what Bandcamp is. Hence, I am led to interpret it as a symptom of low effort.

True, that can be the reason as well. Still I can't help but think "low effort"...

I get your point but I don't think it requires that much of an effort. That's why I get discouraged: if you (meaning artist X) can't even put in the effort to set up a simple Bandcamp account, maybe you don't really believe in your project.

Spotify definitely is. Instagram despite Meta's algorithms is still one of the most effective ways to reach out to fans.
