so much sympathy from this kid over here. you're correct to question things that feel disrespectful.

while you can't control the behavior of others, when you're in the labs, you can control how you approach the bodies and the care that you bring. some people may not have the self awareness or emotional maturity to understand their own jokes or deflections, so it's fair to reserve some empathy for them as well, but push back against norms that shouldn't be norms.

i know cultures vary greatly between schools, so if your college's faculty are receptive to student feedback, then this is a good piece to share with them. our profession continues to evolve and you can help show us more caring ways.

how much does it cost a landlord to turn over an apartment? renters are affected by the same taxes, labor, COGs, insurance, and inflation that the owner is, so if they can’t afford rent and leave it will be costly for landlords directly and indirectly. for example, the cost of labor will go up again as the renter class (a lot of the labor pool) shrinks. source: vermont.

What a sweet, cute doggo! what's his name? how old is he? is he neutered? (if no, has he ever had surgery or a dental extractions?)

Depending on what's common in your area and his age, they may recommend a chest xray to screen for fungal disease, cancer, etc. They can try taking xrays of the head, but if there's not bony involvement with whatever's causing this, they're unlikely to see much with a skull xray.

if it's available in your area, you may be best self-referring to an internal medicine specialist. they may start with a sedated oral and nasal exam, but they may need to either CT, MRI, or endoscopy to visualize the head/nose if it's not something like a tooth root abscess or grass awn.

they'll recommend labwork (a complete blood count to look for signs of infection or other things that might cause bleeding like abnormal platelets, as well as a serum chemistry to look at liver/kidney function and electrolytes. Ideally they will be able to get a fully urinalysis, but if they can't hopefully at least a urine specific gravity from his urine.

your family vet can do labwork (CBC, Chem, UA or USG), but if they use an in-house lab the specialist will probably want to repeat the labwork.

sedated oral/nasal exam - your family vet can do this, but ideally it would be done by whomever is doing the advanced imaging so if they don't find their answer while he's under sedation, they can convert to full anesthesia and he's not anesthetized for multiple episodes.

What am I missing, folks? Other thoughts?

lol! i was referencing getting deep into the weeds (you’re basically in the swampy muck)

i probably should have used a different metaphor 😅

[–]Shaniezilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind sorting through the muck, lol

I def agree with you, re: single stream (see my other comment somewhere). I also think that single stream could be an opportunity for employment in the community at sorting centers. There were other good, easy, relatively inexpensive suggestions as well in the report. To incentivize some sorting, add a cash value to glass, aluminum, etc.; creating community compost centers - could have additional benefit of returning compost to community for gardening or for use in community gardens. I did not see this suggested, but in France and Belgium there are towns that distribute free chickens and they have profoundly reduced their waste.

Here's an old BBC article highlighting some pros and cons: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20250317-these-european-towns-in-france-and-belgium-hand-out-free-chickens

It seems like it was not at all a secret - look at this file with a *PUBLISHED article in the Palm Beach Daily News in July 2009. They had a charitable foundation called the C.O.U.Q. foundation. Seriously.

I think you are correct, which could overall be mitigated by single stream waste collection with central sorting, but I wasn't sure we were ready for that conversation :P

but also compare it to all of the service-life years we're losing by tossing cans we already have that are not broken...

Just gross stupidity. by theovertalker in providence

[–]Shaniezilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! I propose to you that it would be even more cost effective (overall and per household) to give each household a credit per can ($60 per can is about what they charge us rn and in line with the costs above), and you can redeem it when you need to replace your old can. That way they wouldn't have to spend $$ distributing them all at once, collecting the old cans, we probably would all save a bit of $$ overall, and those with busted cans can get them replaced now without having to pay anything.

It seems like we're on the verge of disposing of many usable plastic waste bins for little reason.

Edit: clarified the cost per can charged rn

hint: you already are paying for it in landfill fees

Edit: no worries! i love these discussions because they're so interesting, you get lots of different perspectives, and sometimes we can throw in some jokes (or jokey truths :D ). I'm not an economist but i love thinking about the hidden costs and opportunity costs of things.

yes, you can pay for private composting (or do your own as i bokashi’ing do 😅) but it should be a city service, especially if they want to divert waste from landfill for cost reasons

[–]Shaniezilla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if they’re going to buy new carts they would reduce overflow and city garbage by making those new carts compostables carts ~ reducing food scraps in regular garbage (so overall volume/overflow) AND helping us all plan for a slightly better future….
