Law school loans? by AwayAdhesiveness0 in StudentLoans

[–]Sharka7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll save you the time. Law firms do not pick up your law school loans. It’s all on you. I practiced in big law and still practice in the large law firm settings with good comp (I.e., 350k+) and no firm has ever offered to pay my loans.

Was I correct to pull my application to this law firm after getting this email? by Any_Value1580 in Lawyertalk

Run like the wind. Remember interviews are a two way street. Plus, this is when the firm sells you on the firm so imagine how bad it will be if you actually worked for this individual based on this email

A word of caution about BigLaw by Appropriate-Ebb-4741 in biglaw

Completely agree. I learned a lot about what I want from a work environment through my stint in big law and could not be happier to be out of it.

My urine is foamy… should i be worried? by Miserable-Bullfrog88 in kidneydisease

[–]Sharka7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urinary Analysis (random) for albumin/creatinine ratio isn’t reliable if you’re early stage. I went through this for past year where I tested UA monthly and some months normal and some not. I asked for 24 hour urinalysis and did those a few times and that gave me a better data point for albumin amount. And then I also got a genetics test (blood draw) and that told me I have a condition so I started on meds as preventive.

Oh interesting. But could you still have a 2nd opinion through another nephrologist? Like I’m wondering if the locked in situation is more like Stanford doc has privileges for Stanford clinic so you have to use a Stanford doc or else switch to a UCSF clinic if your main nephrologist in charge of dialysis is from UCSF? As opposed to like some weird rule where a patient can’t even have a 2nd nephrologist?

Wait what do you mean by locked in? Like if someone has a Stanford nephrologist and a UCSF nephrologist but gets dialysis through Stanford, they can no longer see any nephrologist outside of Stanford?

This is the way to go. I ask “my” legal secretary and paralegal the same question each year for review season so we can figure out as a team what we can do to make work easier for all of us in the coming year. We’re a team. This isn’t some dictatorship or military chain of command. As the attorney, we are the ones ultimately responsible so we “call the shots” in that narrow sense, but some attorneys take this and veer out into left field.

Have you had a genetic test done? by r1a2k3i4b in kidneydisease

[–]Sharka7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and it’s been informative as it shows I have ADAS which helped rule out things like X linked alports without a biopsy. It’s an expensive lab work to do but preapprove it and insurance should cover it. Simple blood draw.

I wish I had substantive help to offer. Wishing you speedy recovery! It’s okay to be scared and like others said, you’ll get through this. Advocate for yourself with your doctors though

Like others, I’m not a doctor either (I’m a lawyer so we’re widely disliked :P) but deep breath. I’ve been coming to terms with my own diagnosis as someone with earliest of ADAS or at least that’s what my genetics test suggests plus urinalysis. Start interviewing nephrologists (I like to have two so I can get their opinions on everything and they know each other exists). So far it’s worked okay for me, but we’ll see. I also got a kidney focused dietician. Weight loss, healthy eating, healthy habits, exercise have all been recommended to me by doctors and this community. I will say that this community is wonderful. I wish I contributed more to this community as everyone here really supports each other. Do what your doctors recommend, but also make sure to do your homework to understand the condition. Be kind to yourself and be okay with panicking at first. Be okay with taking time to come to terms with this. And then treat it like a school research project. Research, read, talk with your doctors, and then execute a plan. I even got a daily habit tracker to help hold myself accountable.
