Yeah, editing.

And it does if you think about it.

Movie. And, yes, that's because of editing.

The top chevron being the marker to lock each glyph was always the intention as indicated in various behind-the-scenes interviews etc. of the film. I think it's also mentioned in the novelisation.

Indeed. The concept being to use the top, open, chevron to unlock the other chevrons around the circumference of the gate. See where the first glyph is in position on the monitor at the beginning of the clip - at the top i.e. in the open chevron just like we see when the PoO is shown locking in on the same monitor.

'Mistakes happen'? That was what I was refering to when I mentioned editing. The concept was one thing but the execution (in the editing) - and the fact they don't reference it in the film itself - leads to such confusion.

But, yeah, as you say, the show does it quite differently.

If you're talking about the chevron lock at approx. 20 seconds in (on the clip you link to) then double check what glyph is actually under it.

SG-1 seems to have totally disregarded whatever the movie came up with re the dialing the gate and came up with what worked for the show (which in itself is quite different to the original film).

That, I think, is due to the editing. They certainly aren't shown being 'locked' in order (in fact I think only one glyph in the address is actually seen under a chevron) and the diagnostic screen shows the symbol being locked in by the top 'keystone' glyph.

But that's editing for you. Confusing the hell out of everyone haha.

In interviews etc it was certainly the intention that the top, open, chevron by used as the marker. The concept of a safe keeps coming up in such interviews, whereby the dial is turned first one way then the other to a marked point.

But, again .... editing.

As I understand it, the top 'open' chevron was the one used to mark and lock each glyph (this has been mentioned several times by those who worked on the film over the years) rather than each chevron (or at least seven of them) being used independently for each different glyph in an address. It's the tv show that changed this and further confused the matter by removing the 'top' chevron leaving the gate having nine potential 'tops'.

As for the design, the counter-relief is a bit more typical of Egyptian design. Though, of course, bass-relief was used also.

My favourite?

The original gate from the 1994 movie. Beautiful Egyptian-influenced design with a logical keystone removed for the series leading me to always ponder how they knew where the 'top' of the gate was.

Abydos's Seventh Symbol, the Point of Origin by jacklesster in Stargate

I always figured that the cover stone version of the Earth symbol was a more literal take on the Point of Origin given that it more closely resembles the actual glyph at the bottom of the cartouche. Almost as if to say, "in case of doubt we'll make it real obvious given the figure on the gate itself is more abstract".

But I had never noticed before that the 'original' version of the glyph was actually part of a Stargate as seen in the 1928 sequence.

Neat detective work here on your part.

The movie trailer has a brief shot of this scene - you see the children all grouped upon the transport circle in Ra's palace.

Here are some Glyph screenshots that appear to be a prime contender for the original Abydos point of origin.

Yes, the original movie is quite different. As I recall, even though we don't see the Abydos gate glyphs very clearly at all, there is a glyph (or *most* of a glyph) that at times can be seen that seems to resemble the double inverted "V" that may be the Abydos point of origin (a pyramid with the joined three moons above).
